Komosinae » Yonderverse Codex

Komosinae

Komosinae is a subfamily within Ursidae, containing bears. Members of this subfamily are commonly referred to as magiebeer. These dog-like caniforms are typically very large, have widespread territories, and are apex predators. Those in the ursinae subfamily are known to have metaphysical ties to one or more magical fields, unlike others in the Ursidae family.

These bear species are typically omnivorous. There are nine extant bear species in this subfamily, six of which are omnivores. Roller bears and spotted pandas are herbivorous, while trode bears are exclusive carnivores. This subfamily of bears are exclusively found on planets in the Cheem System. Four species are native to Temperil, two to Emycelium, and one to Adamne, Capepo, and Julios.

Taxonomy

There has been some debate amongst taxonomists whether or not these animals belong in Animalia or Inanimalia. Few animals within the Animalia kingdom have magical affiliations, a characteristic that literally defines those in within the Inanimalia kingdom. Nevertheless, most taxonomists classify magiebeer as animals, due to their biological functions and physiologies which resemble bears almost exactly.

Ursidae

Ursidae is one of nine families in the order Carnivora, their closest relatives being canids, musteloids, and pinnipeds. Ursidae can be divided into five subfamilies: Ursinae, containing nineteen species, Ailuropodinae, containing seventeen species, Tremarctinae, containing ninety-five species, Komosinae, containing just nine species, and Miocinae, containing seven-hundred and fifty-three species.

Physiology

Magiebeer are often very large animals, many exceeding two hundred kilograms in weight, and over two metres in length. The largest magiebeer, the trode bear, can grow up to seven metres in length, and weigh over a ton. However the smallest species, spotted pandas, rarely exceed more than a metre in length and typically weigh just fifty kilograms.

These animals have considerably stocky builds. The majority of their bodies are pure muscle, with short, thick, arms and legs, to support such a robust body. Due to the pure strength of their arms and legs, magiebeer are capable of walking on their hind legs, as can most animals in the Ursidae family.

Unlike typical bears, magiebeer have small heads. Other bears have large heads to assist in their masseter and temporal jaw muscles. The majority of a magiebeer's physical strength is magically sourced, which explains why most species appear much slimmer than a traditional bear, despite being larger.

Species

Arsan Bear

  Scientific Name
Juliursus arsas
Distribution
Julios
Average Height
140cm (shoulder height)
Average Weight
100 - 500kg
Colouration

The only magiebeer from planet Julious, arsan bears inhabit the windswept continent of Arsa. These reddish-brown bears are one of the largest magiebeers, dominating other predators in the region, standing at the very top of the food webs. Despite this, arsan bears are quite friendly and attacks on people are almost never heard of.

Like most bear species, they avoid interaction with people. Urban areas are only approached in times of desperation, when juvenile bears attempt to rummage through garbage in search of food during night times. They are easily recognisable in the sage forests of Arsa, but their prey species easily confuse reds and greens.

Etheras Coast Bear

Physiologically similar to spectacled bears, etheras coast bears are the only bear species found on Capepo. They inhabit the estimated seven thousand islands of this continent region, paddling between islands in family-groups. Coast bears are an incredibly friendly species, however capsains that live in neighbouring islands fear them for their menacing appearance.

Etheras coast bears have an innate connection with aquamancy, the field of magic relating to water. They can breathe underwater with said magic, despite lacking gills or any biological functions that would allow this. An omnivorous species, they can be seen snacking on fish in these waters, and on fruit from the islands.

Field Bear

  Scientific Name
Komosus ager
Distribution
Temperil
Average Height
3 metres (shoulder height) Average Weight
800 - 900kg
Colouration

The second largest magiebeer species, field bears are native to the Torrential Plains of Temperil. Field bears are a rare species; as solitary animals, each individual occupies vast territories and rarely see conspecific.

Field bears are sometimes kept as guard animals, thanks to their loyalty and ability to train. While these animals are incredibly dangerous due to their size and strength, they are rather docile and most will follow any given orders. Surprisingly, field bears are not apex predators. They are still hunted by even larger animals, such as trode bears farther down this list.

Moon Bear

Conscious efforts to repopulate this endangered species are ongoing around Emycelium. Moon bears cannot compete with new predators in the food webs of their habitats, causing their population to dwindle. A nocturnal species, moon bears have the ability to fly during full moons. Nobody is quite sure how this works, but in the mornings after full moons, it is not uncommon to find one or two moon bears on somebody's rooftop.

They inhabit the Ecoan Rainforest, alongside spotted pandas, feeding on fruits, roots, shoots, bark, small vertebrates, and large insects for juveniles. They might have a diverse diet, but other animals are quicker at consuming them.

Komosus luna

Roller Bear

  Scientific Name
Komosus perforus
Distribution
Temperil
Average Height
100 - 110cm (shoulder height)
Average Weight
90 - 110kg
Colouration

Metaphysically tied to terramancy, roller bears are considered true burrowers. Individuals construct nests weaving through hills and mountains, their shovel-shaped claws capable of digging through solid stone and soft natural metals. They have been known to actively avoid both trode bears and xanthic firebears, as these animals can be found worldwide.

These animals are almost never seen on the surface. If they are, it is usually the result of a dormant volcano awakening, earthquakes, or tremors, that cause instability in the ground where these animals live. Due to their proximity to some dormant and active volcanoes, eruptions are usually the result of excessive digging.

Ryujan Panda

Stuff of legends, the last time a ryujan panda was seen on Adamne was nearly a hundred years ago. They live close to the Silent Library, believed to have the ability to communicate with the dead that reside in this haunted necropolis. Despite people's pilgrimages to the Silent Library, ryujan pandas remain unseen. Evidence of their footprints, fur, and faeces, are commonly found on these pilgrimages, so there are certainly some remaining.

Unfortunately, there are few details of these animals in any records. Those that do exist describe these animals as vicious, blood-sucking monsters, so maybe it is a good thing they haven't been seen in so long.

Spotted Panda

  Scientific Name
Ailurana parvomaculosus
Distribution
Emycelium
Average Height
60 - 80cm (shoulder height)
Average Weight
40 - 60kg
Colouration

Occupying the humid Ecoan Rainforest of Emycelium are spotted pandas. These fluffy little bears are the smallest species in this subfamily, standing at only seventy centimetres in height. Their miniature frame makes them an outlier in this subfamily, as all other members of Komosinae stand over a metre tall at shoulder height.

Because of this, spotted pandas are commonly kept as large house pets. Many pet pandas enjoy their lives of luxury, as serukians actually understand how to provide their pets with outstanding husbandry and welfare. Unfortunately, spotted pandas are now more commonly domesticated than seen in the wild.

Trode Bear

Without a doubt the most powerful and dangerous bear species in the Yonderverse, trode bears are stuff of nightmares. Roaming the entire planet Temperil, trode bears attempt to cure their insatiable appetites with anything that fits in their mouths.

These bears stand at five metres in height, capable of running up to sixty miles per hour, plus minor teleportation with their innate connection to electromancy. Nothing stands in their way. The native temperilians fear this species, but thankfully, trode bears are too comfortable in the thick of the Forever Storm that they rarely tread into urban areas. When they do, the world goes into lockdown.

  Scientific Name
Megarctos trodus

Xanthic Firebear

  Scientific Name
Megarctos pyroxanthus
Distribution
Temperil
Average Height
3 metres (shoulder height)
Average Weight
800kg - 1000kg
Colouration

Another apex predator of Temperil, xanthic firebears have an innate connection with pyromancy. Capable of setting their entire bodies alight, they survive the harsh winters in the Antarctic Circle by digging up to ten metres underground and creating an elaborate burrow, warming up the soil around them.

Xanthic firebears live in the only place where trode bears don't, serving as apex predators in their native environments. These animals can breathe fire using flame sacs located behind their eyes, that produce a flammable mucous that sets alight once ejected from their mouths.

Tag yourself, I'm a Moon Bear: slow eater who's bad at surviving and occasionally ends up on the roof. Though I also relate to the Ryujan Panda: sneaky, loves books, hates people, communes with the dead.
