Slime

Inhabiting the squishy planet Osao are slimes. These intelligent blobs of... something... have developed intricate and prolonged cultures from hundreds of thousands of years of peaceful history.

Their optimistic drive for exploration has pushed them far beyond their solar system. Slimes have formed close bonds with several other sophonts in the Kurhira System. Millions of Sacaethean Refugees fleeing their war-torn home planet have found comfort on Osao, and by these people's sides.

Anatomy

Slime Fishing by Mochi

Slimes are an amorphous species, the only similarities in individuals being their internal corpa. Their general physical alignment is spherical, the most comfortable resting position for the species. They form either a slug-like foot or humanoid legs to locomote.

Their flesh can be torn apart and recycled. Removed flesh ages at the same speed as the slime itself, so any clothing items made from one's flesh is as old as themselves.

With such an unusual anatomical composition, slimes are practically immune to prolonged pain. With floating neurons around the body that transmit messages remotely, these people are capable of feeling pain, however the sensation never lasts long. Any removed flesh is quickly grown back. The only part of a slime's body that suffers permanent damage is their internal corpa.

Slimes come in all colours, a select few possessing duochromatica, a slime-exclusive condition where their body is evenly split between two hues.

Diet

Motheeerrrrrr? What's for dinnerrrrrr?
Spaghetti'd squid, dear.
Ew.
— Mother and son

Slimes have no fixed diet, as their digestive systems are powerful enough to break down extremely tough materials. With proper training, slimes are capable of digesting soft metals such as tin.

The culinary world has boomed in recent years, with many professional chefs taking on more complex and unusual foods. Not even the most obscure food items are turned away - some chefs specialise in using excess slime. Some chefs hire slimes with ESP, or Excess Slime Production, as their source of this vital ingredient.

Reproduction & Growth

Okay, baby is in the chamber. It should be ready iiiin three months.
— Mother having just completed division

Slimes are avid reproducers. It is a simple process, more akin to mitosis. Slimes do not possess any sexual organs, and instead when a slime is sexually mature they are able to divide, one half retaining its internal corpa, the other slowly developing one over the course of several months.

Developing slimes are typically held in incubation chambers, if parents can afford one. Otherwise they are placed in the safest known location and closely guarded, as the slime is vulnerable during this stage.

Behaviour

Gender Identities

There is only one sex identified within slimes. Gender identities are much more complex, with various gender constructs created, with associated behaviours and roles within society. One's gender identity is entirely the individual's choice, and are globally recognised and respected.

Strong negative emotions are rarely felt by slimes. Anger, hatred, and aggression are foreign concepts to these peaceful people.

Forming one's unique identity is a huge part of being a slime. Body autonomy is a fundamental right to these people, and individual stylistic choices are encouraged and praised. It hasn't always been like this, however. Throughout modern history, many groups of slimes have been shunned for their personal preferences.

Sparkling Slime by Annie Stein

Sparkling Slimes are one such group; these glitter-adorned people were often associated with criminality and oppression.

The modification first started appearing around two thousand years ago. By injecting oneself with crystallised sand, their inner parts would glow and shimmer in sunlight, and glow in the dark. When people first started sparkling it was considered bold, which quickly devolved into shaming those who made the choice.

Sparkling slimes are unfortuantely not the first, nor the last, oppressed group within slime culture. Thankfully, the species have long moved past their prejudiced days, instead supporting those and their decisions.

I would love to know more about what slime explorers have discovered, and the original solar system they came from. I imagine that's what's implied by the first two paragraphs, right? Seeing squishy blobs get so far is inspiring.

I have actually written an article all about their exploration of the solar system! -Osao's Exploration into Greater Kurhira- But you're right, I should've written about it in this article too! D: I shall edit it after the WorldEmber winners ceremony :D

Cool species of slime! I really like how they shaped and modified their bodily structure to reflect their individual stylistic, and I love the sparkling slimes.

Let's have fun creating the impossible, building new worlds, and all types of possibilities. Valcin
