Hothiri

Harvesting Planet
Harvesting Planet Symbol by Mochi

Hothiri is an oceanic harvesting planet, fifth in the Kurhira System. It is a legal subsidiary of Karkhala and the oanie species. The planet was acquired by Karkhala in 2877, just 151 years ago using the Karkhalan Calendar.

The people of Hothiri use both the Karkhalan and the Hothirian Calendar; the former for inter-planetary communication and distribution, the latter to conform with the planet's orbit.

Presently, Hothiri is being stripped clean for its precious resources. Endless oanie-owned and ran businesses, such as Kannvas Oil, are harvesting valuable materials such as oil, minerals and metal elements, plants and corals, and a recently discovered radioactive biological ore, mantisite.

Geography, Location & Climate

Night Islands by Mochi

Hothiri has polar, temperate, and tropical climates. The ocean's ability to conserve heat has raised surface temperatures beyond 40 degrees Celsius. The temperature quickly decreases several metres below the surface.

More than ninety-nine percent of Hothiri's surface is ocean. There are just a few islands around the Catanan Circle, hundreds more appearing at night. These Night Islands reveal themselves during low tides, which coincides with night time.

Large fields of seagrass, coral reefs, and kelp forests make up the majority of Hothiri's biomes. Deep-sea kelp forests are abundant more than a thousand metres below sea level, mostly comprised of moondance kelp.

Points of Interest

Sodden Teeth

The Sodden Teeth are a set of fossilised bone structures buried within the seabed of Hothiri, a remnant of a gigantic primordial superspecies. The set of teeth stretch approximately almost a thousand kilometres in length, a testament to the sheer size of this creature. It has also been confirmed to have been alien in origin.

Glassy Trench

The Glassy Trench sits just outside of the Catanan Circle and is the deepest point on the planet. The trench features striking anemones that produce glassy larva. Large clusters of this larva glow in this abyss with an iridescent shimmer.

Several attempts to traverse this canyon have been made, each one futile. Remotely controlled submarines have all been destroyed and minimal footage has been recovered. What recordings have been salvaged show several giant tentacled creatures displaying incredible intelligence, attempting to communicate with the submarines before destroying them.

Eger Snail Trails
Pretty trails!   The snail that made it is just over the hill there. They don't move very fast, and this poop is squishy still.

Eger snails are gigantic marine gastropods found in shallow waters. Their gigantic flat shells make for the perfect spot to build little gardens. These snails have long tentacle-like appendages that help them adorn their shells with different plants, kelps, anemones, and other colourful organisms.

Being such gigantic, heavy creatures, the leave miles-long trails. Strong currents eventually wash away these trails, not before the snails leave behind presents; their poop. Eger snail poop is high in nutrients and helps revitalise coral reefs and seagrass fields.

History

It is common knowledge that Hothiri has never had its own sophontic species, although recent discoveries may prove this to be untrue. Ruined structures on various Night Islands around the planet may point towards the existence of native peoples, long extinct. Archeologists are attempting to study these ruins, but the nature of the Night Islands makes any exploring difficult.

Fossils of land-based creatures suggest that millions of years ago dry land was once plentiful on Hothiri. Tectonic activity around sixty million years ago caused oceans to expand and continental plates to collapse. As a result, only the summits of the tallest mountains still stand above the water's surface.

Previous Acquisition

Before Karkhala acquired Hothiri, the planet was under control of several others. Hothiri was first claimed by Razhea Capita and the razhean species. They worked hard to preserve the planet while they studied all of its climates, geology, and its inhabitants.

Razhean scientists kept on poking deeper and deeper into Hothiri's oceans until they awoke something. A lot of somethings. They called themselves the Guards of Hothiri. The awakening of their slumber scared razheans off the planet, immediately abandoning it and severing ownership.

Both Saturn and Mars experienced identical encounters before Karkhala found itself claiming Hothiri.

Karkhalan Subsidiary

Previous lessons in disturbing primordial forces have taught oanie to blissfully ignore what could wipe them out. Karkhala claimed Hothiri and oanie were quick to tear apart entire regions of the planet for its precious resources.

This awoke the Guards of Hothiri, but they did not leave the abyss. Oanie slowed down their operations until the guards returned to their slumber, continuing to chip away at harvesting valuable ores, oils, and bio-matter around the shallow reefs.

Localised businesses and corporations began to form, operating entirely within Hothiri. Only the upper echelons of these companies had communication with the outside world, the workers of these giant factories forming their own micro-culture.

Ecology

Hothiri is well known for its bizarre and intriguing lifeforms. In an ocean planet, life is given plentiful space and resources, and constant adaptation and evolution has brought about a number of peculiar species.

Open oceans see many massive cetaceans, plankton-feeding elasmobranchs, seabeds are swarmed with crustaceans, gastropods, and annelids, and the surface is littered with marine birds designed for an entirely aerial lifestyle.

Abyssoteuthidae, commonly known as deepsquids, are the planet's Planetional Taxa. The iconic blue-eyed deepsquid is the planet's Legional Animal, known for their playfulness and willingness to swim up to factory windows and entertain workers.

Night Islands are infamous for their magical inhabitants. The Night Islands are home to completely terrestrial organisms that seem to vanish at dawn, when the tides roll over and conceal the islands. Plenty of inanimals inhabit the Night Islands, haunting local waters.
