Sakara

The most populated city on the planet Osao is the famed Sakara. This city is carved out of the tallest cliff face in this desert, and every single house looks out on to the shimmering, vibrant ocean. The city has a population of 3,405,592, with thousands of these refugees from Sacaethea after the Burning Sea War left millions of pirates without homes, many of which found refuge on Osao.

Population

Size & Sprawl

As the largest settlement in Ecela and on the planet, Sakara is considered Ecela's capital, while Xexiala is considered the planet's capital.

The city stretches five kilometres along the north-eastern coastline of the Coral Desert. Sakara reaches about two miles into the cliff-face in its deepest location, although it mostly sits as a facade and barely stretches underground.

Inhabitants

Sakara is the first place migrants look to move to, thanks to its modern architecture and social views, comfortable weather and climate, and its friendly, diverse inhabitants. Still, 65% of Sakara's inhabitants are slimes, but this city took in the first wave of Sacaethean pirate refugees, after the Burning Sea War and the Battle of Tretera that wiped out several island nations.

Layout & Geography

Following the Silken Coastline that makes up the northeastern quarter of the Coral Desert, Sakara is both the highest and lowest elevated city in the region, simply due to the size and scale of the cliffsides. To access the higher portions of the city, one must navigate a labyrinth of steep walkways and bridges, hanging from house to house. Despite seeming rather dangerous, the city is very safe as no staircase extends for more than a few metres and bridges are secured and monitored several times a day by city cleaners.

The life of a cliffside city does come with some geographical challenges, however. The infrastructure in the city has prevented erosion in the main city, but the surrounding cliff faces on either side of Sakara are beginning to erode. An estimated couple thousand years in the future and it is theorised that Sakara will become an island city, as the coastal erosion will form what is essentially a giant headland, where Sakara is located. This won't cause structural issues, but may force the city into altering its methods of transport to the mainland.

Much power, wow

Districts

Outskirts

Sakara Outskirts by Mochi

Considered a district on its own, the outskirts of Sakara receive very little funding. Formed on large wooden planks and piers tapering out into the ocean, the inhabitants are of the lowest priority in terms of welfare.

Fishing is the Outskirt's largest industry, bartering with other settlements as they are more reliable than their own home.

Education District

Sakara specialises in education, with some of the most prestigious universities. Most families move into the Education District, able to rent out large houses fit for a large number of people. Due to the increasing demand in further education, these universities have had to expand to house several thousand students at any one time.

Workshops and training centres can also be found in the Education District, aimed for young adults. This District is considered the most modern, with the latest technological advancements such as the auto-walker; too lazy to walk? Not a problem, just step on this metal slab and you will be slowly transported to your desired location, while you admire the seaside views.

Economy

Markets & Businesses

Fishing

The largest economy in the Outskirts, there's plenty of popular fishing spots around Sakara. With fishing hotspots for a number of rare species such as kinglings and fissel wrasse, seaside fishing markets are constantly teeming with people.

Tourism

Sakara is the largest city on the planet, and with that draws in countless tourists. The culture of Sakara is one to enjoy as well, and its inviting aromas are incredibly attractive. Literally; aroma candles are some of the most profitable items in the city.

History

The first plans to construct the city date back to 203 BMS, 1,245 years before present day. The plans were drafted by Kishal Bisha, the governer of Ecela at the time. The draft placed this new city on the edge of the continent, practically in the centre of the planet, or at least the centre of the most printed map of Osao.

Passed down stories tell of Kishal dreaming of a city "etched into the cliffs", with ships travelling from across the world coming to see Sakara. Plans went ahead on construction and three hundred architects and a thousand construction workers used the most advanced tools to dig into the cliff face, placing in crucial infrastructure to keep the cliffs from collapsing and reusing the stone to erect hundreds of houses.

The first people moved into the city in 195 BMS, seven years after it began construction. Sakara grew exponentially due to its central location, modern housing, and pleasant climate.

Pirate Diaspora

Sunset over the Standstill by Mochi

The most devastating conflict to have ever occurred on planet Sacaethea, the Burning Sea War was a global conflict between the Frish and the Voll States. The former surrendered after the latter used a horrific weapon and subsequently burned their nations to the ground. Millions of people were forced to flee, many finding refuge on other planets.

Almost a million pirates found homes on Osao, several thousand of which now reside in Sakara. This city's climate mimics that of Sacaethea's, including the coastal location and vertical construction.

Osao is a rocky planet in the Kurhira System, one of eleven. It is characterised by an entirely tropical climate, with average temperatures (Celsius) in the forties, year round.   Five continents make up the majority of dry land on Osao. These five continents are home to perplexing lifeforms, intriguing peoples, and gorgeous sceneries.

I'm going to have to pile on and echo my adoration of the arts that have been added, because I love it. Visual things always add flavor to articles. All in all, just seems like a great place to go. I'm sold.

Your art is so beautiful :D This seems like a nice city. Are the pirates settling well? I hope they're nice with the slimes!

Jul 8, 2023 14:01 by Mochi

Thank youu! Yes, slimes are very welcoming people so the pirates settled in very quickly :D they are both pretty chill people, although if there is any conflict it's usually between pirates - hence the war and the diaspora.

That fisher slime is adorable! Love that the settlement is basically a huge refugee for fleeing people, though why was it built into the side of this cliff for the first place? What benefit do they have by building there and accepting that they eventually will become an island city?

It was built on that side of the cliff because it's centralised between the other continents :D They're also stubborn - by the time they realised their settlement may be destroyed in the future, the settlement was already pretty big and moving was too much of an effort.

A view of the ocean, that's something I've always dreamed of. Sounds perfect to me, diverse, universities, the ocean, ... Having lived in the desert, I always wonder how desert cities get the water they need. Does you city depend on desalination? Do folks in the Outskirts have to carry water from the main city?

The name "Coral Desert" is somewhat misleading x) there's lots of water, but most of it is in the form of tiny tide pools dotted about. As well, slimes are desalinators themselves and when they absorb sal***er they can filter the salt out and use the freshwater :D

Lavani and I had a wonderful trip to Sakara. Here is her review, "Sakara is a lovely city that takes in those in need and warmly greets tourists. The cliffside views were spectacular but I did not master the autowalker. Be sure to visit the candle market and go on a fishing charter when you visit!"
