Ecology of the Dragon Forest

Quick Tip: Hover over the cards to read more!

The Dragon Forest is an extremely mountainous region, with hilly terrain dividing it and the various deserts to the west. These mountains are covered in dense subtropical forests with nutrient rich soil. Since it only rains twice a year in the Western Dragon Forest, lifeforms rely on the thousands of rivers and lakes flowing down the mountains and gathering on large plateaus.

The varying climates across this biome has resulted in a great number of unique species in the area. The humid and dry halves of the Dragon Forest each have their own set of organisms, with some able to thrive in both.

Animalia

Over five thousand species of insects alone have been identified in the Dragon Forest. Skies are full of birds and other flying animals, various climbing creatures skip through the tall, weaving branches, and tiny grazing animals roam through the thick groundcover.

The Dragon Forest's state bird is the jinh, a tiny pink passerine. The forest's State Animal is the pulun, a carnivorous mammal designed for stalking and pouncing on prey from above.

Cerulean Deer

Pudu ceruleii
Cerulean deer are only a foot tall. They roam around the Dragon Forest in small herds, grazing on the plentiful flora.

Draconic Antbird

Cercomacra draconis
A tiny passerine endemic to the Dragon Forest. These birds have a feisty attitude which makes up for their miniscule size, weighing in at about ten grams.

Jinh

Gracula pteroglis
Jinhs are the State Bird of the Dragon Forest. These tiny pink birds are well camouflaged, making nests high in the canopies.

Pulun

Pulun pulun
Pulun are ambush predators that stalk prey from the undergrowth. They are the State Animal of the Dragon Forest, a symbol of the biome's unpredictability and danger.

Spicy Pond Cricket

Galasora aqua
Spicy pond crickets skate along the surface of the forest's ponds and lakes. Their spicy taste deters predators.

Zoarata

Salambera zoarata
Zoaratas are small gecko-like reptiles found in small crevices in tree trunks. They emerge at night, croaking using a sac on their tail.

Plantae

Being such a dense region, the Dragon Forest is packed with flora. Starlight serpents are the dominant tree species, growing in such close proximity to one another that their branches and trunks become entangled. Growing in tight spaces between these trees are grasses, ferns, bamboos, and bushes. Crimson shootroots are the most abundant bamboo species, and is the fastest growing plant on Osao.

Gassy sporepods are a species of short epiphytic fern that grow in the canopies of the forest. When the sporepods are ready, they drop to the ground in a gaseous explosion.

Candlemaker

Sendesine orori
Candlemakers are small flowering plants. Their petals are covered in a thick wax, melting and setting alight in the summer.

Chatoyant Tulip

Tulipa lustra
A tropical tulip species. These pink flowers have shimmering, glowing petals. Chatoyant tulips are the most elegant and expensive flowers used in bouquets.

Crimson Shootroot

Clavobambos crimsonii
A fast growing bamboo species, found in close proximity to starlight serpents. These plants can grow up to a metre a day, and disperse their seeds far faster than any other bamboo species on Osao.

Red Asanitia

Asanitia ludicres
Red asanitias are five-petalled flowers that grow in large bushes. They grow around ponds and lakes, their roots dipping into the water. They can grow up to five metres talland ten metres in diameter.

Starlight Hanging Blossom

Serpenservus edulis
Small perennial epiphytes that grow on starlight serpent trees. They produce small delicious fruits.

Inanimalia

Inanimals are the backbone of the Dragon Forest's ecosystems. Powerful inanimals are common, utilising magic to get by. Specters are common in the area, often tied to the native flora and fauna.

Those that practice witchcraft on Osao often acquire their familiars from the Dragon Forest, thanks to the types of inanimals found here. The presence of magic and various leylines running through the forest have enhanced these creatures and their magical abilities.

Bamboo Ghost

Umbrobambos peculiaris
Bamboo ghosts are small specters tethered to its own bamboo stalk. It protects the bamboo with its life, attempting to haunt those that threaten it. All it can do is create an eery sense of dread.

Floral Wisp

Isori flora
Floral wisps are powerful, peculiar inanimals with the role of maintaining the natural order of things. If anything slips out of the order within the Dragon Forest, it is up to the wisps to contain and eliminate it.

Scarlet Wanderer

Vitadantis florere
Scarlet wanderers are grazing red foxes. They have six tails and white stripes around their eyes. These inanimals are tied to Vitamancy.

This ecologically rich region is one of the biggest forests on Osao.   The Dragon Forest is best known for its trees, starlight serpents. These trees can grow up to two hundred metres in height with a snake-like trunk and skull-shaped leaves.
Osao is a rocky planet in the Kurhira System, one of eleven. It is characterised by an entirely tropical climate, with average temperatures (Celsius) in the forties, year round.   Five continents make up the majority of dry land on Osao. These five continents are home to perplexing lifeforms, intriguing peoples, and gorgeous sceneries.

I absolutely *love* the turning cards, it's such a cool feature. I would love to know more about the scarlet wanderers, I always have a soft spot for foxes. Overall, I love the article!

I have such a weakness for birds. I'd totes set up shop so I could categorize all the flying things and take pictures. Sounds like an awesome place.

What would an ocean be without a monster lurking in the dark?
