Hydromancy
Hydromancy, or water magic, is a field of magic relating to water. It is an elemental magic, one of the most well known and commonly used. More than fifty percent of marine and sea-faring sophonts utilise hydromancy in their daily lives, as it can be particularly useful.
Hydromancers channel energy from the Waterways, a corridor and host dimension for this field of magic.
It is classified as an elegant magic, thanks to water's fluidity and the natural calmness evoked when casting this magic.
Waterways
Have you been there before? The Waterways?I have, it's beautiful. Pristine water. You can see to the bottom of the deepest lakes. All the colourful fishes swimming around, the birds chattering in the trees, it's heaven.
The Waterways is a corridor dimension, used by sorcerers to travel to other realms. The Waterways only has access to other watery realms, such as the Snowball Realm. Behind every waterfall is a doorway, carved out of a blue wood.
Those that visit the Waterways are granted even stronger abilities. The atmosphere heightens one's hydromagical tendencies, the effects permanently lingering even outside of the realm.
The water realm is made of large puddles, pools, and lakes, with rapids, rivers, and waterfalls joining each one. Rocky, moss-capped cliffs are covered in vibrant willow trees, shivering at dusk, releasing clouds of glowing pollen that drift in the light breeze.
Utility & Usage
Water manipulation is the most common use-case. Being able to control the movement of water is an essential for a hydromancer. More advanced sorcerers learn to source water, extracting vapour from the atmosphere and creating water.
Hydromancy often works in balance with other magics, particularly zoomancy. Zoomancers have the ability to communicate with animals, and water magnifies this ability, allowing sorcerers to communicate with and control thousands of creatures at once, from miles away.
Hydromancers have the ability to breathe underwater regardless of their physical anatomy. The effects of pressure from water depth is also negated, giving hydromancers the ability to wander the oceans freely. These two powers only come with repeated exposure to this field of magic; beginners have a long way to go before being able to breathe underwater, and dive to seabeds. Advanced hydromancers are also more powerful swimmers, capable of redirecting strong currents.
Trances
A lesser known use of hydromancy is the ability to induce a trance. The tranquil ripples of water droplets is enough to lull the dullest of minds into a trance, where they can then be psychologically manipulated.Temperature Control
Water and fire magic goes hand in hand when controlling the temperature of water. Sorcerers can learn to raise or decrease the temperature of water or other liquids, transforming it into another state of matter entirely.Seers & Psychics
Hydroseers use ripples and reflections to predict future events. If ripples become violent, a destructive event will occur. Soft, repetitive ripples and a tranquil ring in the air means all is well.Ready? Call out in that direction, and I'll focus on the fish over here. Together, we'll call for the fish to swim in between us, straight into the net. The plan can't fail.
Users
Casilla Maw
Casilla Maw is a renowned member of the Galanti League. She is an equitoid, a species of sophontic shark known for their affluence with water magic. As one of the most commonly practices magics, hydromancers are fairly frequent on most planets. On ocean planets, hydromancers make up the vast majority of the population; in some cases, water magic is embedded into the culture, and even the genetics of these sophonts.
It is a popular magic to practices for beginner sorcerers. There is a low risk with hydromancy which makes it very suitable to amateurs. In magic-oriented schools and training facilities it is one of the first magics students grow accustomed to.
The Titan Ecological Academy teaches students how to manipulate water and how to operate hydroponic farms using this magic.
Razhea Capita has a number of hydromagic schools, built inside aerated domes on the seabed. Students are taught how to master this magic and by the end of the three year course, graduates must learn how to command a shoal of fish, a pod of cetaceans, and a pair of leviathans, all at once.
Hydromancy is a prevalent part of culture on: Capepo, Daglaci, Dave, Greenerth, Kyrophis, Ocearia, Osao, Rubrinea, Venus, among thousands of other planets in the Milky Way and surrounding galaxies.
Inanimals
Millions of hydromagical inanimals have been studied, many endemic to the Waterways. Ecosystems in this realm are diverse despite all relying on water to survive. Puddle phantoms are precious little creatures that flutter around ponds and lakes in small groups, delicately dancing along the water's surface. Each of their footsteps lights up the water, attracting goldfish and other iridescent fish.
Prowling the forests of the Waterways are ephemeral lions. These apex predators release a thick mist from their manes, using it to disguise their location when stalking prey. If you catch a glimpse of these lions, they will vanish the next second.
Magical Items & Artifacts
Thousands of valuable magical artifacts have been created throughout history on different planets, countless reside in museums and galleries. There are also many everyday magical items, sold in convenience stores and shops around the galaxies.
As you know I'm rather new to the Yonderverse. Do I understand it correct that you are writing about a whole ... mulitverse? Because you obviously have a universe and as this article is talking about different realms, it seems to be a multiverse?
I don't really use the term multiverse myself, but I suppose it is! I haven't established parallel universes at all, but there are other dimensions and planes of existence separate from the "main" one, the Capital Dimension.
