Iapeli Qaesa Character in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Iapeli Qaesa

One of the most talented pirate singers on Greenerth.

"Thank you so much for coming! I'm so honoured to be performing here, I've had the pleasure of being in the audience for many years but never been the one on stage, it honestly feels surreal still," exclaimed Iapeli, clutching onto her pink microphone as she steps off the stage. The bright neon lights flash from the ceiling in all different directions, all slowly facing towards the next performer as she walks hastily onto the wooden stage.   "Hi there m'lady! Fancy a drink?" asks an inquisitive young woman standing directly behind Iapeli. She turns around, to come face to face with a beautiful pirate, sleek pink tentacles, tied into a beautiful bun atop her head. Her eyes were a misty blue, her skin soft and shining, as Iapeli replied "Of course, lead the way!"   Wandering to the bar, Iapeli follows this mysterious woman to go purchase a drink. Before the mystery lady sits down, Iapeli slips her hand in the woman's back pocket, taking out a small green card. Iapeli smirks as she turns round, and glides straight to the exit, leaving before the mystery woman realises she is missing.

Iapeli Qaesa

Iapeli Qaesa is the most famous Pirate bard on Greenerth. Her talents are endless, able to hypnotise people with her voice and command them to do whatever she likes. She is one of the most highly regarded artists in the pirate species, her hypnotic abilities hiding her true motives from her audience.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Iapeli grew up in a small colony of pirates, in a small floating island belt, in the north of the Tirensic Ocean. From an early age she was taught how to fight, fend for herself and to kill; as any Pirate child would. To her parents' surprise, she enjoyed more musical hobbies, rather than fighting. Often her mothers would find her singing as she ran around her house, playing musical instruments she designed herself, while all her weapons laid dust-covered in her bedroom.
10 years old
As Iapeli grew up, her singing improved too, greatly. On a few occasions, her voice had entranced her mothers, lulling them to sleep after singing several soft ballads. The first occasion took place when she was 10; Iapeli was singing in her garden, tending to the small flower patch she had for herself. As she was watering the plants, she sung along to a famous song. Her mother, who was also outside, slowly started falling unconscious the more Iapeli sang. It was only when she stopped singing and her mother started to wake again did she realise she was the cause; ever since she had sung much less.
15 years old
The second time Iapeli used her singing powers was when the family Airship was under attack. Iapeli was 15 at the time, and her mother had taken her to a famous city, Setreata, going to try out Airship Racing for her first time. While on the way to Setreata, Iapeli and her mother ran into a flock of airships, all seemingly under one singular gang. Several arrow storms and flamethrowers later, one of the rival airships had approached from underneath and the crew all flooded onto Iapeli's Airship. Her mother fended off a few of the pirates, but there were too many - the only thing Iapeli could do was sing her heart out. A few seconds of a blend of screaming and singing, and the rival pirates had all been stunned, as well as her mother. Now the only conscious Pirate on the Airship was Iapeli, so she shovelled all the stranger pirates off of the Airship and into the ocean, and let her mother wake up and continue the trip to Setreata.
19 years old
Iapeli's first professional, paid singing act arrived when she was just 19 years old. In a small town hall within a tiny village just south of her home town, she performed several songs and received very high praise. She was even asked to visit the week after, to perform more songs as by the time her first act finished the town hall's population had doubled.
26 years old
After several years of covering songs and performing at locations worldwide, Iapeli decided she would finally write her own song. After a month of struggle, she had perfected the lyrics to her song. It took a while, but after speaking to several taverns around the Tirensic Ocean she had finally found one that was willing to let her perform it (they were sceptical since she had always covered songs; they were not sure how her first own song would sound). Thankfully, her first song, named Starry Skies, received very high praise, and was regarded as one of the best Pirate songs ever. Iapeli's incredible range was unlike anything heard in the Pirate world, as their common music was much more upbeat and more screaming than singing.

Employment

When Iapeli was 19 years old, she performed at her first location. A quaint little town hall on a small floating island somewhere in the Tirensic Ocean, she recieved high praise for her talents. After performing in a few other locations, her reputation grew and so did her name.   Writing her first original song when she was 26, it was an incredible success, leading her to write more and more songs. By the time she was 183, she had written over a thousand songs, most of which are internationally recognised. Her success stems from her uniqueness to other pirates. Her first song, Starry Skies, was new to pirates, since they usually enjoyed more upbeat songs, while this was a very slow, melodious one.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Red Rose Award
The Red Rose Award is one of the most prestigious awards a pirate can obtain. The award is only given to those who achieve a perfect score for their singing abilities by 5 different judges from around the globe. The Red Rose Award has only been given to 3 other pirates on the planet, showcasing the incredible talent Iapeli has. This award currently resides as a mantlepiece in Iapeli's home in the Tirensic Ocean.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Unfortunately, Iapeli is not the character most know her to be. Any pirate that knew her name would know her to be a kind, charitable woman, one that cared for others and chose not to plunder or to fight. But behind her wall of fame lies a deceptive character. She often flirts with other pirates after her performances, and while she is doing so, pickpockets the innocent lady. Instead of stealing money, she chooses to steal valuable items that she hangs around her house as a "trophy", to make her feel like she is worth more than others.

Wealth & Financial state

Iapeli is extremely wealthy. Possibly one of the wealthiest pirates on Greenerth. She has used her fame and wealth to construct a massive home on a large floating island in the Tirensic Ocean. Her net worth is unknown, but estimated to be around 300 billion corral. An outlier among the rich and famous, her money was earned from her talents, rather than plundering. Usually a pirate earns their money through robbing others on their airships, but instead Iapeli earned all her wealth through her singing at taverns and locations across the globe.

Lovely article Mochi! I love how it starts with the quote having Iapeli pick pocketing.

Thank you! I've added some more to the article to explain why she pickpockets, as it is a very important part of her character.

Nice read and good opening section! Her adventures in life were also fun to read through, especially how she hypnotized pirates and threw them in the sea :p

Great job on the article Mochi. The only thing that I think is missing is the gap between local talent and world famous. But overall good job. I like that she steals for the thrill/trophies and not for any actual need.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Now that is a great bit of prose to start us off and introduce the character. I love it xD It's really great they way you take us through her life after that too, at certain key stages of her life. Is there any reason you chose the ages to represent, do they hold specific meaning?   I think my favourite part was her knocking everyone unconscious with her singing at 15 years old, and then pushing the passed out pirates off the boat hahaha. It paints a very vivid image in my mind, and I love it. That or the fact that she likes to pickpocket to steam treasures. It's a fun, rogue-ish trait, and it seems to fit her, especially with how she hides that part of herself. She's great xD

Thank you so much! Slightly intimidated that the legendary creator of Cathedris commented on my wee little article 0.0

Legendary?? Intimidating? D: Oh no!   But, happy to read and comment on your lovely article <3

Interesting character! I like how you've detailed her history and rise to fame and that despite her wealth, she still feels an urge to pickpocket.   I am curious, at 183 years old, is this mid-life for pirates? Still young? Later-stage? Is she near retirement, performing frequently, or infrequently? Does she host parties in her home, or is she reclusive? (I ask this last question because I'm imagining a rather uncomfortable scenario where someone finds a stolen item xD )   Again though, fun read!

Thank you so much for the like and comment! She's middle aged, getting up there a bit. Pirates live around 250-280 years, so she has a while to go now xD She does not perform regularly anymore, instead spends her time at home writing and producing songs, and maybe a few times a year performs in big locations in cities. She only hosts private parties for famous people at her house, as she hasn't stolen anything from celebrities. Hope they answer your questions!

Nice article! A bard with tentacles! XD The first quote really set the mood for what type of character she is XD I also love how she just throw everyone off board after the attack! would that kill them or are your pirates some marine species? I'm not sure because of the tentacles...   I'm guessing she learned how to control her hypnotising ability in the end, or everyone would always fall asleep when she sings :p Can she make people do other things than fall asleep?   One small comment I have is that the section employment repeats a lot of info we already have from the previous section, so it could be deleted, and the new information integrated to the previous section too.

The singing pirate has a good progression on her skill, though I would like to know more about the control she needs to use to avoid knocking out her audience. The Red Rose Award surprised me a bit - how did it become so prestigious? I love the spin on the pickpocketing bard, of course a nod to her pirate heritage.

If you have some time, I would much appreciate your feedback on my entry for Adventure April: Carbon Copy Paradise

I really like how you started the article with prose so we got to know Iapeli a bit before going into the rest. She sounds like a really interesting character. I like how her singing is a little magical too. :)
