Naja
Naja is a genus of venomous snakes from the family Elapidae. Most species in this genus are revered for their power and dangerousness. These snakes are commonly known as cobras, and the many species are found within hot, mainly arid, environments.
Naja is the genus containing true cobras. Other species of cobras exist in other genuses, such as the king cobra, Ophiophagus hannah, and the golden spikeback cobra, Gorisensus menaphicia, but these are not true cobras.
Anatomy
True cobras are slender snakes, often reaching lengths of around two metres or more. A signifying trait of all cobras, not just those in this genus, is their ability to raise the front portion of their bodies and flatten their neck, as a threatening display.
All species in this genus have a powerful venom, fatal to most sophonts. Most secrete venom through bites, injecting it directly into the bloodstream, while a handful can "spit" venom, typically a defensive manouvre.
Soft cobra species have specialised scales and skeletons that allow them to compress their bodies to fit in tight gaps. These snakes can fit into any gap larger than their eye.
The witherback cobra, N. ichor, is unique in that its venom can transform one's blood into ichor. The species is considered the most dangerous of its genus, with ichor poisoning one of the most excruciating ways to die.
