Cloudhopper War
The Cloudhopper War was a perplexing conflict intended to drastically reduce the number of invasive cloudhoppers, on Norrab. Concern over cloudhopper populations reaching dangerous levels lead to government officials requesting hunters eradicate as many animals as possible.
Despite six years of fierce battle between people and cloudhopper, the latter remained victorious. Cloudhopper populations had minimal impact and hunters were left abashed.
History
The invasive cloudhopper species first found its way to Norrab around eight hundred years ago, coinciding with the beginning of the Adamnification of Norrab. These animals were quick to acclimate themselves to Norrab's climates, thriving in the warm air.
In just a few months the skies over rainforests were blacked out with the shadows of cloudhoppers, gathering in their millions. They were outcompeting countless native species for food and resources, as well as destroying crop fields and diminishing agricultural output.
Populations continued to rise up until the last 1500s when it hit an all time high. Farming had become incredibly difficult, with crop yields at their lowest. Many native species had gone extinct, outcompeted by cloudhoppers.
Governments across the globe begged professional hunters to eradicate cloudhoppers, with bounties attached to each kill. It began a competition with hunting agencies worldwide, and cloudhopper hunting became something of a sport. Even with rapidly repeating firearms, cloudhopper populations were simply too large for any dent to be made.
The public referred to this event as the Cloudhopper War, and these hunters were held in high regard. With proof of their kills, most services became free. Coastal town Garsonji even built a statue of two hunters, in honour of their work.
After six years, not a scratch had been made. Most hunters had given up, especially after bounties had revoked. The government then requested hunters ceased hunting these animals, but at that point it had become a cornerstone of hunting culture.
Cloudhopper numbers continued to climb, though a global increase in temperatures around the 1700s and 1800s culled around a quarter of the population, from an estimated 29 billion to around 22 billion. The population of cloudhoppers has now stabilised, and agriculture has been able to revive itself.
