Southwell Towers Building / Landmark in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Southwell Towers

The Southwell Towers were 4 separate Towers based on the 4 elements, fire, water, lightning and earth. The towers are centered around the Gravisanctum, which emits a bright green light and is linked to dark magic. The buildings have an unknown origin, but appeared a thousand years ago. It is speculated that these towers were built by a group of 4 witches that were each a thousand years old at the building of them, and they lived in them while they conjured demons and terrorised small towns for the pure enjoyment of it. Funnily enough, these towers are found in the north of Aendatha.

Purpose / Function

The towers are believed to keep the gravisanctum under control, its massive amount of energy is constantly at its peak, and without the towers controlling them it would explode and destroy the entire world. According to lore, the towers allow the witches to steal some of the energy and magic from the gravisanctum, to create their demonic creatures. The tilted shape of the towers created a safe dome that stops the gravisanctum from exploding.

Sensory & Appearance

Fire tower

Upon entering the fire tower, you'll smell a faint burning, and tiny specks of ash will float around you. The rooms are quite dark, but what seems like a million candles illuminate the dim surroundings. When you walk through the main door, you'll see stacks on stacks of books, all to do with dark magic, and spells involving fire and destruction.

Water tower

Upon entering the water tower, you'll be greeted with the smell and sounds of the sea. Faint waves crashing can be heard, despite the lack of oceans nearby for miles. When you enter the main door, you'll see old fishing nets hanging from the ceiling, and hundreds of seashells aligned neatly on shelves covering the entire wall.

Lightning tower

Upon entering the lightning tower, you'll hear the loud crashes of thunder and lightning. On the walls are various pictures of the God of Lightning, Thunderus, and an altar which appears to be where one of the witches worships this particular God.

Earth tower

Upon entering the earth tower, you hear nothing. Absolutely nothing. All you hear are the creaks of the floorboards and the faint puffs of your own breath. Few books sit on the desk as you enter, and they are all coated in dust, as if nobody has been there in years. Nothing sits on the walls except tons of scratches all over them.

Architecture

The towers are built out of stone, which over time has cracked and some parts have broken away, leaving massive parts floating in the air. The walls are filled with crevices that small critters and bugs like to call home. The towers themselves are completely overgrown since they have been abandoned, and strangler vines have grown all the way up the towers, and from some viewpoints it is impossible to see the towers themselves.

History

This tower's origin is currently unknown, but believed to have been formed over a thousand years ago, but a group of 4 witches that previously lived in the forest. They used the energy and magic from the gravisanctum to create demonic creatures and perform ghastly spells that they then used to terrorise various local settlements, just for fun.

Tourism

Mage historians are drawn to this location, because of the rich yet unkown history behind it. Many mages come here to read the books found in the towers, and they can learn new spells that they have never heard of.

Included Locations

Familiars

Each witch is known to have had a familiar. These familiars were incredibly powerful, and could easily defeat and kill a high ranking mage. The gravisanctum seems to magnify magic spells, and as well magnifies supernatural creature's abilities.

Earth Witch

The earth witch owned a Hexgator, a large tortoise with the ability to hypnotise then mind control with the lights hanging from vine appendages. This creature was amongst the most powerful of its species, having 16 lights (more lights = more power).

Fire Witch

The fire witch owned a Blazing Owl, a large owl found in the Hell Zone. This blazing owl was bigger than normal, and most unusually the feathers were purple and the fire was a deep blue. No other blazing owl has ever been recorded with those colour schemes, as they are normally reds, oranges and yellows.

Lightning Witch

The lightning witch owned a pair of tiny lightning nymphs. Since they were an elemental spirit orb, they were incredibly powerful. As well, the magic seeping out from the gravisanctum magnified their abilities.

Water Witch

The water witch owned a large hippocampus, which spent its life in the streams just beside the water tower. The hippocampus had the ability to control amounts of water, something only few, very powerful hippocampi could do. This hippocampus in particular seems to be a corrodus subspecies, having the same patterns and sails as a corrodus.   These creatures were likely picked as the witches familiars due to their power, being some of the most powerful creatures of their species in existence, and their supernatural abilities. Hexgators can hypnotise people, then controlling them with their minds, Blazing owls have incredible brute strength and strong individuals can control fire, lightning nymphs have full control over lightning, light and storms, and hippocampi are rooted in mythology, having incredible speed underwater, up to 500mph, create tidal waves and control the tides themselves, and they are immune to water magic.   They were all noticeably larger than others of their species, the hexgator presumed over 3m tall, the hippocampus over 10m long, blazing owl 1m tall and the lightning nymphs were 10cm in diameter, the biggest difference in sizes.
