Corrodus

Corrodi are a species of freshwater eel found in fast flowing deep lakes in the Frost Lands. These are one of the only species of venomous freshwater fish, using their venom to paralyse its prey and eat it whole.

Basic Information

Anatomy

As adults, these eels are about 2 metres long. While they are a freshwater species, they share more similar body physiques with deep saltwater fish. They have very small eyes on either side of their heads, these are a light grey and aren't good at seeing. Their jaws and mouths are very long and thin, as is their bodies, with a bulbous tip and a seemingly spiky node on it. Their teeth are short but very sharp; several long rows of the teeth line the inside of their jaws used to rip apart their paralysed prey. A long, spiky orange sail sits atop its slender red body, connected to a large tail fin which splits into two.

Genetics and Reproduction

Female corrodi mate with males in the middle of breeding season, in Uribar. The females will lay hundreds of eggs at the bottom of the riverbed, while the male will then secret its sperm on top, to fertilise it. These eggs are then protected by the females while the male will go out and gather food for its partner and its currently unhatched babies.

Ecology and Habitats

Corrodi thrive in the deep waters of rivers in the Frost Lands. They live in depths of over twenty metres, meaning there isn't a lot of rivers they are found in, but where they are they are found in an abundance. In the depths the movement of the water affects them less, so their brittle bodies are put under less stress.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Corrodi have a special paralysing venom that gets injected into their prey. This prey ranges depending on the river, anything from smaller fish, invertebrates like shrimp, crayfish and freshwater crabs, even freshwater snails. Thankfully, their venom is not strong enough to cause severe harm to a harmonid, the place of injury only feels numb for a few hours.
