Duskcrawler
Duskcrawlers are massive lightning/air dragons that fly high in the sky, gathering electrical energy as it flies through the clouds during thunderstorms. These creatures are most commonly seen at dusks, when they fly high in the skies, bathed in lightning as they glow bright colours.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Duskcrawlers are about 40 feet long, with two small stubby legs that are used to shuffle along the ground. Their ribs are unique for their species, able to flatten themselves out to change the shape of their bodies. This allows them to alter the air pressure above and below them, which in turn lets them float in the sky. Their tails are almost completely muscle, as they spin it round in circles to push themselves forwards. Their tails end in silvery feathers, that can grow up to 32 feet long. Their heads are small, and very narrow, with a long snout. Their jaws can unhinge and open to almost 180 degrees, making it easy to swallow. Their mandible can also split into two, which helps them digest large food that wouldn't otherwise fit in their mouths. The dragons range in colours, from dark purples, blacks, greys, to a lightish blue colour.
Sexual Dimorphism
Duskcrawlers are rather easy to distinguish between the sexes. Female duskcrawlers have much longer tail feathers, practically the same length as their body, whereas males have a shorter one, just over 30 feet long.Fire
Duskcrawlers do not breathe fire, but instead can breathe lightning that they store in their bodies during thunderstorms. When a thunderstorm occurs, they fly high in the skies and fly through the clouds, collecting as much lightning as they can by absorbing it in their scales, which gets transferred into a special organ that can tolerate the energy, and it is later redistributed through their mouths.Ecology and Habitats
Duskcrawlers are most comfortable in quiet places, where not a lot of life lives. They are common in and around the Thundering Paths, a common place for lightning dragons to live. They nest in mountains, where they will usually just lie on the mountainside without constructing a home, and the same applies for their eggs.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Duskcrawlers don't eat, as they use the energy obtained from thunderstorms to keep them alive. They don't need much energy either, as more of the energy goes towards its lightning breath.
Geographic Distribution
That's an interesting mechanism they use to fly! Nice article :D For what you could add, what about predators/dangers that can kil them and average lifespan?
Thank you! I'll add that asap :)
