Bushy Bee Species in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Bushy Bee

Bushy bees are common critters found in the cold mountain regions of the Frost Lands. They were introduced to Trecath and the Northern District after their population dwindled to barely a few hundred, however they couldn't cope in Trecath. Their population boomed in the Northern District, giving rise to their honey production after the bees died out in the Frost Lands, causing many bee workers to move to the Northern District. To this day, there is a population of 20 billion bushy bees in the Northern District, sinking in the winter and surging in the summer.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Bushy bees have a small, fat, furry body. The fur has black and icy blue stripes on them, the fur is so cold it can fracture at a gently touch, how the bees manage it is unknown. They have 6 small black legs and two beady eyes. Despite being honeybees, they greater resemble bumble bees in their size and appearance. They have 4 pairs of light blue wings with a sturdy dark blue elytra.

Genetics and Reproduction

Bushy bees work in a hive, with the Queen being the sole bee to produce young. The Queen's entire life is to lay eggs and produce new workers. The newly laid eggs get moved to hatchery chambers where they are taken care of by the eggsitter bees, who spend their lives looking after the eggs until they hatch.

Growth Rate & Stages

Once the baby bees have hatched, they are moved to the secondary nursery, where babysitter bees are in charge of raising them to become workers. This growing up usually takes about a week.

Ecology and Habitats

Bushy bees naturally live in temperate environments; they were native to the mountainside meadows at the base of the Frost mountain range.
Now existing in the Northern District, they live from the north west coast all the way down to the Shamarplateau, and on the south of the country all the way almost reaching the coast.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Bushy bees take the pollen from many flower species in the meadow mountainsides they live in, taking it back to their nest to be turned into honey.

Additional Information

Social Structure

At the top of the hierarchy in a bushy bee hive is the female workers. The female workers order the other male workers what to do, and they control the entire hive on their activities. Below them are all the other bushy bees, the eggsitters, babysitters, soldiers, male workers and the Queen. The Queen actually has no power, but instead her only given job is to lay eggs and hatch more baby bees. The soldiers are the bees who guard the hive from danger. The male workers go out and search for pollen, then bring it back to create honey.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Half the population of bushy bees are domesticated, to create honey. The Northern District's main trade resource is honey, since bushy bees exist only in the Northern District and so many hives are harvested.
Lifespan
4 weeks
Conservation Status
When the temperatures in the meadows got colder in the Frost Lands, the bushy bees died out, and so harmonids decided to move a massive population of them to the Northern District and Trecath. They took to the areas in the Northern District, as it was not too warm and not too cold. They unfortunately found Trecath too cold, and died out there.

Interesting. Unlike real-world bees, these little fellas have male workers. Oh, also they freeze you at the touch, so that's pretty rad.
