Great Forbin

Great Forbin is a sprawling island situated in the heart of the Helerin Archipelago, distinguished by its diverse landscapes, rich ecosystems, and the cultural tapestry of its inhabitants.
Governed primarily by the Realm of Forbin, this island is home to both the reclusive Dharo and the industrious Norran, each residing in domains separate from the Forbin population.   The varied environments range from the imposing Minark Mountains and Forn Crags in the north to fertile plains and wild coastal regions, each contributing uniquely to the island’s character.

Climate

Great Forbin enjoys a comfortable, temperate climate, characterized by warm summers and cool winters. Rainfall is abundant, particularly in spring and early autumn, nourishing the lush vegetation and agricultural lands. The towering Minark Mountains and Forn Crags shield the southern regions of Great Forbin from harsher weather, allowing for diverse agricultural practices. The southern areas, including Parroc, often experience warmer temperatures, supporting a flourishing agricultural landscape.

Geography

The Minark Mountains dominate the northwestern landscape, serving as the source for the River Fahl, which flows down to sustain the lush Nythran Forest. This ancient woodland, inhabited solely by the Dharo, is a sanctuary of biodiversity, characterized by towering Fir, White Beech, and Oak trees whose dense canopies provide habitat for numerous creatures. Beneath the tree cover, vibrant undergrowth thrives, including medicinal plants like Arraxosa and colourful Firevine.   Further north up the western coast, the Northmarch Hills rise gently, characterized by scrubby vegetation and few trees. This area in the Northern Marches is the source of the Barga and Enton rivers, vital waterways for agriculture and trade. The White Hills to the south in the region of Whitevale are home to the ruins of Lurin’s Keep, which stand as a testament to the region's history. Meanwhile, the Dawnsreach peninsula juts into the sea to the northeast, known for its wild landscapes and dangerous creatures.   The Forbin Channel separates Great Forbin from the nearby island of Daros to the east, while the Forn Crags create a natural boundary between the northern and southern regions of Great Forbin. South of these mountains lies the vast and wild Boswood, which serves as a crucial habitat for diverse wildlife, with rivers like the Bos and Artin flowing through it.   To the south, the Bay of Jalus cradles Forbin's capital city of Holdras, where the Fahl finally meets the Sea of Fair Winds. The surrounding landscape is characterized by calm waters and low-lying woodlands, creating a serene environment for farming and trade. The Hayil Strait on the south coast separates Great Forbin from Mar Miskun, marking another important maritime route. The coast of Parroc is fertile and largely free from dangerous creatures, while the regions of Gilrim and Westrun become wilder further west.

Flora

Great Forbin is rich in plant life, showcasing a variety of species adapted to its distinct environments. The Nythran Forest is characterized by towering trees, such as Fir, White Beech, and Oak, whose dense canopies provide habitat for numerous creatures. Beneath the tree cover, vibrant undergrowth thrives, including medicinal plants like Arraxosa, whose bright red petals are highly sought after, and colourful Firevine, known for its bright orange blooms.   The agricultural regions of Jalussan, Midrun, and Parroc are adorned with fertile fields cultivated for grains, fruits, and vegetables. Common plants include Achamen and Banthis, which contribute to the local economy and culinary traditions. Wildflowers flourish in spring, enhancing the landscape's beauty and attracting various pollinators.   In contrast, the Amber Plains in the island’s interior present a more barren landscape, marked by resilient grasses and shrubs like Bloodpetal that survive in harsh conditions. Despite the desolation, these plants symbolize resilience and adaptation.

The forests and plains are populated by a diverse range of mammals, including deer, squirrels boar, and foxes, alongside larger predators like wolves, Vorind and Rhakkor that can pose challenges to settlements.   In the agricultural plains of Midrun and Parroc, deer and wild boars roam freely, while smaller creatures like hares and golden squirrels enrich the ecosystem. The rivers, particularly the Fahl and Enton, support numerous aquatic species, including the prized Darvion and the Kressarass, which are vital to local fishing communities. Coastal waters provide habitats for seals and dolphins, often seen accompanying fishing boats, while the dangerous Lorghee lurks in the depths.   The wild lands of the Dawnsreach and Cape Gilia provide habitats for more dangerous creatures, such as Rhakkor, and serve as scavenging grounds for crows and vultures. Seabirds, including gulls and Stormhunters, frequent coastal areas.
