Vulture

The Vulture is a large scavenging bird found across the dry and arid regions of Helerin. Known for its broad wingspan and stark appearance, the Vulture plays an essential role in the ecosystem by cleaning up carrion and preventing the spread of disease. Despite its ominous presence, the Vulture is respected for its role in maintaining balance in the wilds of Helerin.

Physical Appearance

Vultures in Helerin are large birds, with wingspans reaching up to 9 feet. They have dark brown and black plumage, with stark white or bald heads and necks, which allow them to feed on carrion without soiling their feathers. Their hooked beaks are designed for tearing flesh, while their sharp eyes and excellent sense of smell help them locate carrion from great distances. Their broad wings allow them to soar effortlessly on thermals, scanning the landscape for food.

Habitat

Vultures are most commonly found in the dry, arid regions of Helerin, particularly in the eastern parts of Mar Miskun, Mar Mabon, and southern Teros. They prefer wide, open landscapes where they can easily spot carrion and other remains. Vultures are often seen circling high above the ground, riding the warm air currents, waiting for an opportunity to descend on a meal.

Behaviour

Vultures are scavengers, feeding primarily on the remains of dead animals. They are highly social birds, often gathering in large groups around a carcass, and their presence is often a signal to other animals that prey has been killed. Despite their size, Vultures are non-aggressive and prefer to avoid conflict, relying on their ability to clean up carrion rather than hunting live prey. They are slow to breed, with pairs raising one or two chicks at a time in nests built on high cliffs or rocky outcrops.

Geographic Distribution

Vultures are widespread across the eastern regions of Mar Miskun, Mar Mabon, and southern Teros, where the arid conditions and wide open landscapes suit their scavenging lifestyle. They are a common sight in these regions, often spotted soaring high in the sky, scanning for carrion or remnants left by predators.

Interaction with People

While Vultures are often associated with death and decay, they are also respected for their vital role in cleaning up the environment and preventing the spread of disease. Local people often regard the sight of a Vulture as an ominous sign, and their presence is viewed with a mix of fear and respect. In some regions, Vultures are believed to carry the souls of the dead to the afterlife, and their appearance in the sky is seen as a connection to the world beyond.
