Northern Baylands
The Northern Baylands are a region within Teros Major, stretching along the northern shores of Leviathan Bay, and bordered by the Natarrine Sands to the northwest, the Crimson Hills to the northeast, and the hinterlands of Teros to the east. To the southeast, the landscape gently slopes towards the fertile vales of the River Oln and the Vizrin Highlands, while the towering Redpeak Mountains dominate the far horizon.
This region is a mix of rolling grasslands, sparse woodlands, and areas of arid scrubland, providing a milder landscape compared to the harsher northern and southern territories of Teros. The Northern Baylands have long been a center of agriculture, with the fertile lands along the River Osra and other lowland plains supporting the growth of wheat, herbs, and other crops that sustain local populations.
The principal settlement of the Northern Baylands is Osran Bara, a bustling port town on the coast of Leviathan Bay. While the Burnt Keep dominates the skyline, a dark reminder of past conflicts, Osran Bara remains a thriving hub of trade and commerce. Ships from across the archipelago dock here, and the town's lively markets reflect the economic activity that keeps the baylands connected to the rest of Teros. Osran Bara serves as the political and economic heart of the region, and its presence ensures that the Northern Baylands are a significant player in the realm’s affairs.
Further inland lies Osran Bodis, a smaller town known for its wheat farming and its large temple dedicated to Girys, the goddess of harvests. Located along the banks of the River Osra, the town's fertile fields provide grain and other crops to much of the region. Osran Bodis’s farmlands are fed by the river, and the town’s people take pride in their agricultural heritage.
Along the coast, Sharn Morill sits on the marshy shorelines, a small town surrounded by brackish coastal marshes, teeming with wading birds and coastal wildlife. Fisherfolk ply the marshes and coastal waters, providing food for the region. To the south, the ruins of Balsan-Jann, once a mighty wizard’s tower, stand as a haunting reminder of the region’s arcane past, while the nearby Fort Chiryn lies in ruins, a casualty of the War of Salvation two decades ago.
Though not as wild or dangerous as other parts of Teros, the Northern Baylands have their share of threats. The Natarrine Sands bring harsh winds and creeping dunes from the northwest, while wolf packs from the Crimson Hills occasionally descend into the plains. Boar roam the grasslands and foxes are frequently seen near the farms and coastal roads. Herds of Hrynn graze peacefully, though sometimes venture close to settled lands during the winter months.
The region’s plant life reflects its agricultural strength, with the Lombora blanketing the plains, providing grazing for local animals. Pirthingallam moss thrives along the riverbanks, while scattered Sirathin and Silverhorn offer shade in the woodlands and valleys.
