Hrynn

The Hrynn are wild, hardy creatures that roam the remote hills and mountains of Helerin. Unlike their domesticated counterparts, these wild sheep have retained their independence and resilience, thriving in small, tight-knit flocks far from settled lands. The Hrynn are known for their agility and sure-footedness, as well as their striking horns, which make them a distinctive feature of Helerin’s wilderness.

Physical Appearance

Hrynn are stocky, muscular animals, standing around 4 feet at the shoulder and weighing up to 300 pounds. Their dense wool coats vary in color from pale grey to dark brown, providing them with excellent insulation against the colder climates of the highlands. Both males and females have horns, though the males’ are more prominent, growing in large, spiraling arcs that can reach up to 3 feet in length. Their hooves are designed for gripping rocky surfaces, allowing them to navigate steep terrain with ease.

Habitat

Hrynn prefer the rugged, mountainous regions and windswept hills of Helerin, often found in areas where the terrain is too challenging for other grazing animals. They thrive in rocky highlands and steep cliffs, grazing on tough grasses, mosses, and low-growing shrubs. Their ability to survive on sparse vegetation in harsh environments makes them particularly suited to the more desolate and less accessible areas of the archipelago. The Hrynn are rarely seen in lowland areas or forests, favoring open, elevated terrain.

Behaviour

Hrynn live in small, cohesive flocks of around 10-15 individuals, led by a dominant male. They are extremely social animals, relying on the flock for protection against predators. Their sharp horns are used not only in defense but also in ritualized contests among males during the breeding season, when rams clash in dramatic displays of strength. While generally peaceful, Hrynn are quick to flee to higher ground if threatened, using their agility to evade predators. However, cornered males can be fiercely defensive of their flock.

Geographic Distribution

Hrynn are found in the remote, mountainous regions of Remon and Forbin, as well as the highlands of Teros Major and the northern hills of Mar Mabon. They are well-adapted to the cold, windswept environments of these regions, particularly in the northern parts of the archipelago. In Mar Mabon, they are most common in the Shidar Highlands, while in Remon they roam the Krund Hills and Tarndol Heights.

Interaction with People

While the Hrynn are not farmed, their wool and horns are highly prized by hunters and craftsmen alike. Hrynn wool is thick and durable, often used to make warm, hardy clothing suited for the colder climates. The horns, particularly those of the rams, are used in crafting tools, weapons, and ceremonial items. Hunting Hrynn is a challenge due to their habitat in difficult-to-reach places, and they are respected by mountain-dwelling communities for their resilience. Despite their value, they are not typically hunted for meat, as their flesh is considered too tough and gamey. In some regions, the Hrynn are seen as symbols of endurance and determination, often featured in local folklore.
