Plains of Zarroth
The Plains of Zarroth stretch across the northeastern peninsula of Teros Major, forming a vast expanse of grassland that reaches the shores of the Sea of Zarroth to the north and the Sea of Fair Winds to the southwest. Winds constantly sweep across these plains, making the golden grasses ripple like waves. Though largely flat, the landscape is interrupted by shallow valleys and occasional rolling hills. During the warmer months, the plains burst into vibrant colours as wildflowers bloom, painting the grassland with reds, yellows, and purples.
Vegetation on the plains is sparse, adapted to the semi-arid conditions of the region. Hardy plants such as Bloodpetal flowers thrive in the dry environment, adding bursts of deep red colour to the plains. The ubiquitous Nifrin grass dominates the landscape with its pale yellow stems, which are used by the nomads and herders of the plains for their warming flavour in food and herbal remedies. Along the banks of rivers and in sheltered valleys where water is more abundant, small groves of Sirathin offer rare patches of shade. These spiky conifers are essential to the few communities that wander the plains. In certain pockets, Meskia rise with their tall stems, their delicate flowers releasing a faint, sweet fragrance that the winds carry across the plains.
Wildlife thrives across the Plains of Zarroth, especially the vast herds of Hrynn that graze in large numbers on the plentiful grasses. These herds attract dangerous predators like wolves and the deadly Rhakkor. Smaller creatures, such as burrowing rodents and birds of prey, also find homes in the open expanse, taking advantage of the flat terrain and wide horizons.
The massive Dutha, a subterranean predator, is one of the most feared creatures in the region. Though rarely seen, their vast underground burrow systems stretch beneath the plains, and their powerful limbs and sharp claws make them formidable opponents for anyone who disturbs their territory. Tak-tak are another danger to travellers. These ferocious pack hunters use their speed and sharp beaks to take down larger prey, stalking the plains in search of their next meal.
Equally fearsome are the Skoppa: their aggressive nature and powerful mandibles make them a dangerous foe, especially when they swarm in numbers, and their venom is deadly to those unlucky enough to cross their path. Less visible but no less dangerous is the Narshax, a large rodent species that burrows beneath the surface of the plains. Known for their aggressive swarming behaviour and voracious appetites, Narshax can decimate crops, livestock, and even travellers who stumble upon their burrows.
Amid this dangerous landscape roams the Morru, a massive and peaceful grazing animal native to the plains. These colossal creatures, though generally docile, are respected for their size and strength. They graze on the tough grasses and shrubs, embodying the endurance and stability of the plains' wilderness.
The Plains of Zarroth are a place of both beauty and peril. The ever-present winds and the open landscape give a sense of boundless freedom, but the dangers lurking beneath the surface and within the windswept grasses make it a challenging and often dangerous place for those who dare to cross it. From the deadly creatures that stalk the land to the fierce storms that roll in from the Sea of Zarroth, this is a region where survival requires constant vigilance and resilience.
