The Dutha is a massive, mole-like creature that dominates the underground ecosystems of Helerin’s deserts and plains. Known for their exceptional digging abilities and powerful limbs, Duthas are formidable predators that live deep beneath the surface, where they carve out vast networks of burrows. Their size and strength make them one of the most feared subterranean creatures in the arid regions of Teros Major, Teros Minor, and Mar Mabon.
Physical Appearance
Duthas can grow up to an impressive 20 feet in length, with thick, muscular bodies built for burrowing. Their hides are covered in short, bristly fur that is usually dark brown or black, helping them blend into the shadows of their underground homes. These creatures are almost completely blind, as their eyes have regressed over time due to their subterranean lifestyle. Instead, they rely on their highly developed sense of smell and their ability to detect vibrations in the earth to locate prey.
The most distinctive feature of the Dutha is its enormous front paws, which are equipped with hooked claws that can easily tear through earth and soil. These claws are not only used for digging but also for capturing prey, which the Dutha pulls into its burrows. Despite their strength, Duthas cannot tunnel through solid rock, and their burrows tend to follow natural paths of softer ground.
Habitat
Duthas thrive in the deserts and plains of Teros Major, Teros Minor, and Mar Mabon. Their vast burrow systems can stretch for miles, creating a hidden world beneath the surface. In these regions, the Dutha primarily digs through soft, sandy soil and loose earth, avoiding rocky terrain whenever possible. These underground networks provide shelter from the harsh elements of their environment and serve as hunting grounds for the Dutha.
Their burrows are often found in more remote areas, where settlements are sparse, as they prefer to avoid disturbances from people and other large creatures. Duthas typically reside in areas where the ground is rich in smaller subterranean creatures, which serve as their primary food source.
Behaviour
Duthas are largely solitary creatures, only coming together during brief mating periods. They are carnivorous, primarily feeding on smaller ground-dwelling and subterranean creatures such as rodents, insects, and other burrowing animals. Their extraordinary sense of smell allows them to track prey even from great distances, while their ability to detect tiny vibrations in the earth makes them highly efficient hunters.
Duthas spend most of their time expanding their burrow networks and hunting for food. They are not aggressive unless provoked or defending their territory. When threatened, Duthas can use their massive claws to devastating effect, both in combat and in quickly retreating into the safety of their burrows. They are nocturnal creatures, emerging from their burrows only under the cover of darkness to hunt.
Geographic Distribution
Duthas are found across the deserts and plains of Teros Major, Teros Minor, and Mar Mabon. In Teros Major, they are most commonly encountered in the more desolate areas of the Wastes and the Plains of Zarroth, where their underground burrows are extensive. On Teros Minor, Duthas are scattered across the island’s arid regions, while in Mar Mabon, they inhabit the dry plains and the outskirts of the Curmon Desert.
While Duthas are widespread across these regions, they are rarely seen above ground, making direct encounters with them a rare and dangerous experience.
Interaction with People
Duthas are generally not a direct threat to people, as they prefer to stay underground and avoid populated areas. However, they can pose a danger to travelers or those venturing into the wilds, particularly if they accidentally stumble upon a Dutha’s burrow. Stories of entire caravans disappearing into the ground due to collapsing tunnels or sudden Dutha attacks are common in desert regions.
The Dutha’s large claws and hides are highly prized by hunters, though few are brave enough to seek them out. Their claws are often fashioned into weapons or tools, while their tough hides are used to craft durable leather goods. Despite their fearsome reputation, Duthas are not deliberately hunted in large numbers, as the risk of encountering them in their natural environment is significant.
