Rast Lowlands
The Rast Lowlands stretch across the northeastern part of Teros Major, a broad, fertile plain nourished by the steady flow of the River Rast. This river meanders westward through the Lowlands, joined by the Stolmon River before reaching its mouth at the town of Chir Jassod on the Sea of Zarroth. The Lowlands are a rich agricultural region, their soil made fertile by the regular flooding of the Rast and its tributaries, supporting vast stretches of farmland where crops such as wheat, barley, and other staples grow abundantly.
The landscape is defined by wide, open plains, dotted with small villages and farming communities clustered along the riverbanks. The grassy fields and cultivated lands are occasionally broken by patches of woodland, where trees like Oak, Pine, and Fir provide shade and shelter from the elements. The edges of the river are lined with plants like the tall, bronze Estinar reeds, which are used for crafts, and the vibrant orange-yellow Orangemantle, adding bursts of color to the landscape during its blooming season.
Despite its fertility, the Rast Lowlands are not without their challenges. The rivers can flood during the spring rains, transforming parts of the plain into marshy terrain, especially near the convergence of the Rast and Stolmon rivers. Farmers rely on well-constructed embankments and irrigation channels to manage these floods and prevent the water from washing away crops. The proximity to the Wastes to the north also means that sandstorms can sometimes blow down into the Lowlands, threatening to choke the crops and cover the fields in layers of grit.
To the south, the rolling Crimson Hills form a natural boundary, where the terrain becomes more rugged and the fertile plains give way to rocky outcrops and scattered groves of hardy trees. As the land rises toward the hills, the Lowlands are interspersed with small forests and woodlands, where plants like Silverhorn conifers and Sirathin trees grow in the sheltered hollows.
The towns of Chir Jassod, Solmon Ford, and Pennon are the key settlements in the Rast Lowlands, serving as important hubs for trade and agriculture. The bustling markets of Chir Jassod, located at the mouth of the River Rast, are famous for their fresh produce, while the streets of Solmon Ford and Pennon see traders bringing in goods from across Teros Major. Despite their prosperity, strange tales often circulate, especially around the town of Pennon, where local rumors of dark magic and otherworldly occurrences make travelers wary of the area.
The Rast Lowlands, with their wide-open spaces and rich farmland, are a vital source of sustenance for the people of Teros Major. Though they face occasional threats from nature and strange rumors, the fertile plains continue to thrive, making the Lowlands the breadbasket of this northeastern corner of the island.
