Leviathan Bay

Leviathan Bay is a vast body of water located along the southwestern coast of Teros Major. It is part of the Sea of Fair Winds. Named after the legendary sea monsters said to dwell in its deep waters, the bay has long been feared and revered by sailors and coastal communities alike. Its waters are dark and tumultuous, frequently subject to powerful storms and unpredictable currents that have claimed many a ship.   The coastline around Leviathan Bay is diverse, with towering cliffs, rocky shores, and sandy beaches. In the eastern reaches, near the city of Olnath, the land slopes gently toward the bay, providing a natural harbor where the capital thrives as a center of trade and commerce. To the west, the coastline becomes more rugged, with jagged cliffs rising sharply from the sea, battered by the relentless winds and waves. Southern settlements, like the town of Gullhaven, take advantage of hidden coves and sea caves, though the dangerous waters and rocky shoals make navigation perilous.   Beneath the surface, Leviathan Bay is home to an abundance of marine life. Vast schools of fish swim through its waters, feeding on plankton brought in by the bay’s swirling currents. However, the bay’s true danger comes from the larger predators that roam its depths. Sailors speak in hushed tones of Sea Serpents, monstrous creatures capable of sinking entire vessels. These elusive creatures are rarely seen, but their presence is felt in the eerie calm before the storms that frequently sweep through the bay.   Despite its dangers, Leviathan Bay is a critical hub for the economy of Teros. Ships from across the Helerin Archipelago sail into Olnath's ports, bringing goods from distant lands and exporting the produce of Terosian fields and workshops. Fishing remains an important industry here, though the best catches are often brought in from the more sheltered waters around the smaller port towns like Lespir and Osran Bara.   Leviathan Bay’s unpredictable weather is a constant concern for those who sail its waters. Violent storms, whipped up by the prevailing winds from the south, can roll in with little warning, and the strong tidal currents make even the calmest days a challenge for navigators. The waters around the western shores are particularly dangerous, with powerful riptides and sharp reefs that have led to many shipwrecks. Local sailors know to respect the bay’s dangers, offering prayers to Treca, the goddess of storms, before setting out to sea.   While Leviathan Bay is primarily known for its dangers and its trade, it also holds a mysterious beauty. The deep blue waters shimmer under the midday sun, and the cliffs and beaches that line its shores offer breathtaking views of the vast, untamed sea.
