Olnath Catacombs

Olnath's catacombs are a vast network of tunnels that travel deep beneath the city. Originally a disparate collection of mining tunnels, they were later connected and extended to provide burial space. Over time, some of the city's poorest residents took to living within the tunnels.   The first tunnels were delved early in the 8th century to extract stone. In 959, priests of the Temple of Frenar petitioned the Lady of Olnath for permission to expand and re-purpose some of the tunnels as a burial crypt.   Over time, the tunnels were further expanded, with new districts created for the tombs of wealthy citizens. Older tunnels were forgotten, or were gradually taken over by the city's destitute.   In the 15th century, large sections of the catacombs flooded, and parts of the networks are still partially submerged to this day.   The catacombs have entrance-points across the city, although many have been lost or forgotten over the centuries. No complete map of the tunnels exists.
