Crimson Hills

The Crimson Hills, stretching between the River Osra and the River Stolmon, are a key mining region in Teros Major, known for the iron, copper, and rare gems found beneath their rocky terrain. These rugged hills form a natural barrier between the Vizrin Highlands to the south and the Rast Lowlands to the north.
The town of Benann, nestled in the heart of the hills, is the main settlement in the region. Known for its skilled metalworkers and miners, Benann has thrived due to the rich veins of ore that run beneath the hills. It serves as a hub for trade, with roads leading west to the port town of Natarr, north to Kerenna and neyong to Persothan, and south through the Vizrin Highlands to the capital city of Olnath.   The Tower of Berrod stands on a crag overlooking the road through the hills.

The small towns of Morshann, Ferrash, and Kurrin dot the southern slopes of the Crimson Hills. Morshann, located at the head of the River Osra, is known for its blacksmithing, and rumours persist of enchanted stones found in the river that enhance the quality of metalwork. Ferrash, situated near the confluence of the Filran and Harrin rivers, is famed for its weaving and fishing industries, while Kurrin, located near the springs that give rise to the Filran River, is a centre for herbalists and healers, thanks to the aromatic herbs growing in the area.   The terrain of the Crimson Hills is rugged, with scattered woodlands in the lower valleys and hardy scrub on the upper slopes. Plant life includes Pirthingallam moss and occasional Sirathin trees. The region's climate is dry and hot in the summer, with cool breezes blowing in from the Sea of Fair Winds to the west.   Wildlife here is sparse but resilient. Fox and Vorind roam the higher reaches, though they rarely come near the towns. Raptors such as Sarnoss and hawks nest in the crags, while smaller creatures like the golden squirrel and the elusive Shaddan songbirds flit through the woodlands.   The region is not without danger; the deep mines are rumoured to hold unknown creatures, and stories of wandering Rhakkor occasionally surface among the miners, though these large predators are thankfully rare in the hills.   Despite its wealth, the Crimson Hills remain a dangerous region. Landslides and cave-ins are common, and many of the deeper mines are only accessible to experienced crews. The people of the region are tough, used to the harsh landscape, and take great pride in their long history of metalwork and craftsmanship.
