Kerenna

Kerenna is a large town in the north of Teros. It lies at the northern edge of the Wastes on cliffs above the River Resk. Kerenna stands on the road north to Persothan.

History

Kerenna was founded in the early 2nd century.   The Towers of Dawn and Dusk were built in 962.   The marketplace was built in 1314.   The great gate on the bridge was built in 1354.   The rebel Shurok Trentin was born here in 1582. He took control of Kerenna in 1620, supported by poor farmers and miners - the Sons of the Dust. This led to the First Battle of Kerenna in 1621, in which the king, Lormand was killed. Two years later, at the Second Battle of Kerenna, Shurok was killed and defeated by Lormand's son, Frishak III.   Krissas Klentamar was killed in a bar brawl in the town in 1777.   The merchant Vantis Marolline was born here in 1790.   The soldier Velta Darran was born here in 1907.   A major earthquake in 2182 killed many in the town. Further north, Zarrin Keep was destroyed.

Power and politics

Government

The Master of Kerenna is the Keeva Lord Dalthass. A former soldier, and a shrewd political operator, Lord Dalthass has been effective in resisting the control of the Peacekeepers. Kerenna remains largely independent of Forbin's rule.

Defence and security

Kerenna's position on the edge of both the Wastes and the Plains of Zarroth brings threats from bandits, warlords, and dangerous beasts. It offers the best sanctuary for a hundred miles in any direction, and is crucial for trade routes north and south and for goods passing from the Mavan Gap and Redpeak Mountains. The town is defended by a sturdy wall on three sides, with the gorge of the Resk providing a natural barrier to the north, bolstered by the bridge and Great Gate.   The town maintains a Watch to guard the walls and, in theory, to keep the streets safe. Captain Khortan commands the force here.

The Peacekeepers also keep a small force in the town, although Kerenna marks the limits of Forbin's reach, and those posted here are mostly concerned with avoiding trouble with the locals. Captain Sholmiss is the cowardly local commander.   Kerenna is a rough frontier town, and a harbour for rogues and brigands. Crime and violence are common, and residents and visitors alike must see to their own safety and security.

Other powers

Many of the regional warlords and brigands maintain agents in the town - or exert pressure on those in charge to act in their interests.

Geography and environment

Local geography

Kerenna stands on hill, atop the southern side of a deep gorge, through which passes the River Resk. To the south lie the Wastes, while the Plains of Zarroth lie to the north.

Design and architecture

The town is shaped in a rough semi-circle along the edge of the gorge. Entrance to Kerenna from the south is via a gated tunnel that emerges in the midst of the town.   Most roads run parallel to the contours of the hill, with ramps or steps allowing movement between them. Limited space within the town's perimeter has led to narrow streets and taller buildings.   Kerenna's architecture leans more towards the functional than the beautiful. Buildings are designed to be sturdy and strong, with thick stone walls, and heavy timber. Many older buildings show signs of damage from the earthquake of 2182.

Landmarks and key locations

In addition to its striking entryways, Kerenna has a number of notable landmarks and important locations in and around the town.   A pair of identical towers - the tallest in Kerenna - stand at opposite sides of the town. In the east stands the Tower of Dawn, while in the west its sister, the Tower of Dusk, stands as its mirror. They were built in the 10th century.   Kerenna is home to temples of Balcosh and Piatok, as well as smaller shrines to Lessada and Mavani.   In the eastern district of the town, close to the wall, the Rescue of Kerenna Memorial comemmorates the victory of Frishak III at the Second Battle of Kerenna.   Kerenna's marketplace is a three-tiered amphitheatre in the heart of the town.   Tomb of Jaron II: Jaron II died here in 1821, and an elaborate tomb was constructed the following year outside the southern wall of the town.   In 2193, the king attempted to remove the warlord Drishal Racham from his stronghold in the Wastes and was defeated at the Battle of Crow Mountain. Later that year, his tomb was constructed east of the town, on the southern side of the gorge.

Transport

Kerenna is the gateway to the north of Teros. Across the great bridge, the road leads far to the north across the Plains of Zarroth to Persothan amidst the waters of the Festermere.   A mile south of the town sits a crossroads. From here, the great road leads south through the Wastes to Benann. To the west, a road roughly follows the Resk to Reskon on the coast. Eastward, a dangerous road leads to the mines in the foothills of the Redpeaks.

Industry & Trade

Kerenna's trade is with other towns and cities in Teros. As the town sits at the limits of the Peacekeepers' control, the town is a hive of smuggling for goods passing between the occupied territories and Persothan to the North.   Stone (sandstone) is quarried nearby.
