The Shaddan is a beautiful bird known for its striking black and gold feathers and its low, melodious song. Found across the plains of Mar Miskun, Mar Mabon, and southern Teros, the Shaddan is a solitary bird that brings a calming presence to its surroundings, often inspiring poets and musicians with its tranquil song at dawn and dusk.

Physical Appearance

The Shaddan is a sleek, medium-sized bird with glossy black feathers accented by golden streaks along its wings and tail. Its short, sharp beak is perfectly adapted for its diet of seeds and insects, and its dark, shimmering plumage makes it a striking figure in the early morning light. The bird's distinctive gold markings are especially prominent when it takes flight.

Habitat

Shaddans thrive in the open plains and grasslands of Mar Miskun, Mar Mabon, and southern Teros. They prefer areas with tall grasses and low vegetation, where they can forage in peace. These solitary birds tend to avoid crowded or densely wooded regions, favoring the wide-open skies and expansive plains where their songs can echo far and wide.

Behaviour

Shaddans are known for their low, soothing song, which can be heard at dawn and dusk. Unlike many other birds, they prefer to live and hunt alone, rarely forming flocks. Their song is soft and melodic, carrying a sense of calm that has earned them admiration from locals. The Shaddan’s diet consists of seeds, small insects, and occasionally berries, which they hunt with precision using their sharp beaks.

Geographic Distribution

The Shaddan is most commonly found in the plains of Mar Miskun, Mar Mabon, and the southern regions of Teros. They are widespread across these areas, though they remain elusive, blending into the tall grasses where they forage.

Interaction with People

The Shaddan’s song is cherished by the people of these regions, often seen as a soothing and inspirational presence in the otherwise harsh landscapes. Musicians and poets frequently reference the Shaddan in their works, inspired by the bird’s serene and solitary nature. While its feathers are not highly valued, its presence is appreciated for the peace it brings. Some locals believe that hearing the Shaddan’s song before sunrise brings good luck for the day ahead.
