Boar

Boars in Helerin are wild and aggressive creatures, known for their fierce nature and formidable tusks. Unlike the larger and more dangerous Redsnout, these boars are smaller but still present a significant threat, especially when provoked. They inhabit many of the wild, forested, and hilly areas of the archipelago, and their ability to adapt to various environments has made them a common sight across the realms.

Physical Appearance

Boars in Helerin are stocky, muscular creatures with coarse, bristly fur that ranges in color from dark brown to black. They have sharp tusks that can grow up to a foot in length, which they use for foraging and defense. Adult boars typically stand around 3 to 4 feet tall at the shoulder, with males being larger and more aggressive than females. Their bodies are built for power, allowing them to charge at incredible speed when threatened.

Habitat

Boars thrive in a wide range of habitats, from dense forests to rolling hills and rugged highlands. They are particularly common in the woodlands of Remon and Forbin, where they forage for roots, berries, and small animals. In addition to forests, boars are also found in scrublands and near rivers, where they can wallow in mud to cool off during the hotter months. They avoid the arid deserts and high mountains, preferring areas with ample vegetation and water sources.

Behaviour

Boars are social animals, living in small groups called sounders, usually consisting of females and their young. Males tend to be more solitary, especially as they grow older, only joining groups during mating season. Boars are omnivorous and highly opportunistic, feeding on roots, tubers, fruits, small animals, and carrion. They are most active at dawn and dusk, foraging in the early morning and late evening to avoid the heat of the day. While boars generally avoid humans, they will not hesitate to defend themselves if threatened, and their charges can be extremely dangerous.

Geographic Distribution

Boars are widely distributed across the archipelago, particularly in the forests and lowland regions of Remon, Forbin, and Teros Major. They are most commonly found in the Silverwood of Remon and the dense forests near Nythralla in Forbin, as well as the fringes of the Festermere Swamps in Teros. They are less common in Mar Mabon, though small populations may inhabit the more fertile northern regions. Boars are also found in the Seynan Islands, though they tend to be smaller and more elusive there due to limited space and hunting pressure.

Interaction with People

Boars are both a nuisance and a valuable resource to the people of Helerin. Farmers often find their crops ravaged by foraging boars, leading to conflicts between humans and these wild animals. Despite their destructive tendencies, boars are hunted for their meat, which is considered a delicacy, as well as for their tusks, which are used in crafting and decoration. Boar hunts are common in many regions, and they are seen as a test of skill and bravery. In some cultures, boars are also symbolic of strength and ferocity, appearing in local legends as fierce and indomitable creatures.
