Isle of Mourning

The Isle of Mourning is a bleak and desolate island situated approximately 15 miles off the western coast of the Cape of Larramir, in the far south of Remon. Rising out of the Gamanaean Ocean like a lone sentinel, this forbidding isle is a place of solitude and legend, with high, sheer cliffs on its northwestern side and barren, rocky terrain stretching across its surface. The island is sparsely covered in low, scrubby vegetation, with little to no tree cover, giving it a stark and haunting appearance.   The island’s name comes from the eerie howling winds that sweep across it, creating a constant, mournful sound that reverberates along the cliffs. Sailors navigating the waters nearby often report hearing these ghostly wails at night, adding to the island’s reputation as a place of death and sorrow.   Despite its barren landscape, the island is home to some hardy wildlife, including colonies of seabirds such as the Ulmathren, with its massive wingspan, and Gulls that nest on the cliffs. These birds are often the only signs of life on the island, their cries adding to the desolate atmosphere. The surrounding waters are treacherous, known to harbor dangerous sea creatures like the Lorghee eel, which lurks in the deep, cold ocean, preying on fish and unwary fishermen.   In 1544, the island was the site of the shipwreck of the Oakheart.   The Isle of Mourning holds little appeal for settlement or exploration due to its harsh conditions, lack of fresh water, and ominous reputation. However, it remains a point of fascination for scholars, sailors, and treasure hunters, drawn by tales of ancient shipwrecks and hidden treasure believed to be buried somewhere beneath the island’s rocky surface.
