Grimcrags
The Grimcrags are the tallest and most foreboding mountain range in the Helerin Archipelago, dominating the northern reaches of Remon. These jagged, snow-capped peaks rise sharply from the surrounding lowlands, their steep cliffs and rocky slopes creating a harsh, windswept environment. The Grimcrags are home to some of the most treacherous terrain in Remon, with deep chasms, hidden crevices, and sheer rock faces challenging even the most skilled climbers.
The lower slopes of the Grimcrags are covered in hardy vegetation, with Fir, Pine, and the occasional Silverhorn clinging to the rocky ground. Grathor Thorn, a large shrub with twisted branches and long thorns, grows in abundance here, adding to the already difficult terrain. Higher up, the vegetation becomes sparse, and only the most resilient plants, such as Spireleaf, manage to survive the cold, thin air. The mountains are also home to Stonefelt lichen, which clings to the rocky outcrops and provides a meager source of sustenance for the creatures that inhabit the range.
The Grimcrags are a place of danger, not just because of their terrain, but because of the creatures that dwell there. The Yrin, massive goat-like herbivores, navigate the cliffs with surprising agility, but their size and strength make them formidable when threatened. Far more dangerous are the Linsarr, fearsome six-legged predators that use the mountains’ cliffs and caves to stalk their prey. Higher up, Rhakkor lurk in the caves, waiting for unwary travelers or animals to cross their paths.
At the headwaters of the River Banrak, where the powerful falls tumble down the craggy cliffs, stands the enigmatic Guardian of the Falls. This solitary figure, a silent sentinel bound by ancient magic, watches over the treacherous crossings and ensures that only those who prove their worth may pass. Shrouded in mystery, the Guardian’s stoic presence is a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk within the Grimcrags, where even the terrain itself can become an adversary to those who venture too far.
The mountains are also home to the Norran city of Athrin Ko, one of the last remaining strongholds of the ancient Norran people. This fortress, carved into the mountainside, showcases their unparalleled skill in stonework and architecture. The Norran live in relative isolation, using the natural defenses of the Grimcrags to protect their culture and way of life.
