Kalar Plains
The Kalar Plains stretch across the northernmost part of Mar Miskun, forming a vast expanse of flat, open grasslands bordered by the Penstrarn Hills to the south and the Hayil Strait to the north. The plains are a dry, windswept region, with little vegetation beyond hardy grasses and scattered patches of Chorka and Pryval shrubs. The landscape is largely barren, with no trees to break the monotony of the endless grasslands, and rocky steppe terrain appearing in places, creating a rugged and desolate atmosphere.
At the heart of the Kalar Plains lie the ruins of Korazin-Torr, an ancient castle that once stood as a symbol of power and control over the region. Now, it is a crumbling relic of a long-forgotten era, its weathered stones overrun by the wild grasses of the plains. To the northwest, the ruins of the town of Carathing sit on the coast, another reminder of the area's former glory. Both sites are occasionally visited by adventurers and treasure hunters, though the harsh conditions of the plains and the danger posed by the wild creatures make such journeys perilous.
The Kalar Plains are home to some of the island’s most formidable wildlife, particularly the Redsnout, a fearsome boar-like creature that roams the open plains in small herds. These aggressive beasts are known to charge anything that gets too close, making them a constant threat to travellers and settlers alike. Their large tusks and sheer size make them one of the most dangerous creatures on the plains.
Birdlife is abundant in the Kalar Plains, with Alyrros and Eagles soaring high above, scanning the flat terrain for prey. These majestic birds nest in the rocky cliffs along the northern coast and are often seen diving down to catch small animals that live in the plains. Smaller birds, such as the colourful Brightwings, flit among the grasses and shrubs, adding splashes of colour to the otherwise dry and muted landscape.
The plains are also haunted by legends of strange and deadly creatures, particularly Wyrms, which are said to burrow beneath the rocky ground, surfacing only rarely to attack unwary travelers. Though sightings are rare, the presence of these serpentine beasts adds an additional layer of danger to the already harsh environment.
One of the few inhabited places in the Kalar Plains is Fort Hayil, situated on a point along the northern coast, guarding the Hayil Strait. This strategic fort serves as a defensive position against invaders from across the strait and is one of the few signs of civilization in an otherwise desolate region.
Despite their dangers, the Kalar Plains hold a stark beauty, with the endless sky stretching over a sea of golden grasses. The region’s history, combined with its untamed wilderness, makes it both a place of mystery and a challenge for those brave enough to explore its vast expanse.
