Berin Sound
Berin Sound is a broad expanse of deep water lying between the northern coast of Remon and the southern shores of Great Forbin, connecting the Sea of Zarroth in the north with the Straits of Jaltra further south. The sound is known for its calm yet deep waters, providing an important maritime passageway for trade between the two major islands and beyond. Sheltered by the coastlines of both Remon and Forbin, Berin Sound offers safe harbour to ships, making it a vital part of the seafaring routes of the Helerin Archipelago.
The sound is framed by rugged coastlines and dotted with smaller islands, the most notable of which is Berin Po, a small, rocky island located near the northern edge of the sound. Once home to ancient settlements, Berin Po has long been abandoned, its windswept cliffs and sparse vegetation contributing to the island's eerie reputation. Ships often sail around Berin Po, as the waters near the island are said to be treacherous, with sharp, submerged rocks and dangerous sea creatures lurking beneath the surface.
The waters of Berin Sound teem with marine life, attracting fishermen and sailors alike. Fish such as Melmakkir and Bellim-Ban thrive in the sound, making it an important fishing area for nearby coastal towns, especially those on the Remon shore. However, the sound is not without its dangers. Large, predatory sea creatures such as Lorghee eels and Reestlash have been known to inhabit its depths, posing a threat to fishermen who stray too far from the safer, well-travelled routes.
Berin Sound’s southern stretch narrows into the Straits of Jaltra, a busy trade route between Remon and Great Forbin. To the north, the waters open up into the Sea of Zarroth, where powerful currents and changing winds can make navigation difficult, especially for less experienced sailors. Despite these challenges, Berin Sound remains a critical maritime passage, with its calmer, deeper waters offering respite to ships navigating the rougher seas beyond.
The sound’s coastline is marked by a mix of jagged cliffs and low, sandy shores. On Remon’s side, the Denerth Woods run along part of the coastline, their towering trees creating a dark, brooding backdrop. Castle Biltar, a fortified structure that watches over the sound from a headland on Remon’s eastern shore, stands as a symbol of the region’s strategic importance, guarding against potential naval threats from across the waters.
In 1266, the Battle of Berin Sound was fought on the shores of the sound: Jayn III of Remon was defeated and killed in battle against his wife’s forces.
