Bay of Kaylan
The Bay of Kaylan lies in the southwestern corner of Mar Mabon, a region where the otherwise harsh island gives way to a rare sense of vitality. The bay is sheltered by jagged cliffs that rise on either side, while the waters are deep and teeming with life. Fed by the Kaylan River, which cuts through the barren surrounding lands, the bay’s shores are greener than the neighboring deserts, with pockets of grass and hardy shrubs clinging to the river’s edges.
Despite its more fertile appearance, the Bay of Kaylan is wild and dangerous. The open sea to the southwest invites fierce storms and turbulent waters, making travel treacherous for sailors unaccustomed to the region. Thrasse, the winged terrors of the sea cliffs, make their nests in the rocky outcrops along the coast, swooping down to attack boats or scavenging along the shores. In the shallower waters, Krethgorr, massive crustaceans, prowl the seabed and have been known to drag smaller vessels beneath the waves, making them a constant threat to those venturing too close to their domain.
Inland, the rugged terrain around the bay transitions into the arid expanse of the Curmon Desert, creating a stark divide between the relative greenery of the river-fed coastline and the lifeless sands beyond. The bay, while visually inviting, holds no permanent settlements, as the unpredictable weather and the lurking threats of sea and land creatures keep all but the most daring travelers away. Yet for those who can brave its dangers, the Bay of Kaylan remains one of Mar Mabon’s most untamed and awe-inspiring regions.
