Burning Peaks

The Burning Peaks stretch over 250 miles through the centre of Mar Mabon, forming a jagged and treacherous mountain range known for its deadly terrain and violent volcanic activity in the south. The peaks are riddled with fissures, hot springs, and lava flows, and tremors often send landslides crashing down steep cliffs. In these volatile regions, geysers erupt unpredictably, and the very ground can shift without warning, making travel perilous.   This hostile landscape is made even more dangerous by the fearsome creatures that call the Burning Peaks home. Among the most terrifying is the Basilisk, a giant, stealthy lizard that prowls the rocky slopes, ambushing prey with its crushing jaws. Basilisks blend perfectly with their surroundings, making them nearly invisible until they strike. In the upper reaches, where the cliffs are narrow and treacherous, Pitressas—massive spiders—spin webs across mountain passes. These colossal creatures wait patiently to ensnare anything that crosses their path, injecting venom to paralyze victims before cocooning them in silk.   Roaming the lower slopes are Rhakkor, towering predators whose massive size and strength allow them to dominate the landscape. Their loud roars reverberate through the mountains, a warning to those who stray too close. Further south, near the volcanic heart of the peaks, Stonescales—giant lizards with rock-hard skin—bask on the heated rocks, camouflaged against the landscape. These aggressive ambush predators strike swiftly and without warning, making them one of the most dangerous creatures in the region.   The skies above the peaks are no safer, as flocks of Moggrins, small but vicious winged hunters, patrol the crags in coordinated packs. Their sharp talons and swift, silent attacks overwhelm prey before they even realize the danger. Deep in the more remote and isolated reaches of the range, the Lirketh, a massive serpent, slithers through the rocky highlands, using its immense strength and venom to crush and paralyze anything that crosses its path.   In the searing heat of the southern Burning Peaks dwells Karrith the Hermit. This enigmatic figure has lived in solitude for centuries, inhabiting a secluded cave near the region’s most active volcanoes. Karrith is said to possess knowledge of the deepest secrets of magic, gleaned from the volatile energies that permeate the mountains. Though few dare to seek him out, those who do must navigate the treacherous terrain and prove themselves worthy, for the Hermit’s assistance does not come without a price. His presence is shrouded in mystery, and it is rumoured that he can bend the fiery forces of the peaks to his will, summoning flames and lava flows to guard his domain.   Between the constant threat of volcanic eruptions and the deadly predators that roam every corner, the Burning Peaks are among the most dangerous places in Helerin, where even the bravest rarely return unscathed.
