Berin Po
Berin Po is a small, windswept island in the northern reaches of Berin Sound, between the coasts of Remon and Great Forbin. Once home to a thriving community in earlier centuries, the island has long since fallen into ruin and abandonment. Its rocky shores and sparse, wind-beaten vegetation give it an eerie, desolate atmosphere, contributing to its reputation as a haunted and cursed place in the lore of the Helerin Archipelago.
The island’s history is marked by both magic and bloodshed. It was the birthplace of the famous 12th-century mage Narn Kellar, also known as Narn of Berin Po, who became renowned for his mastery of arcane arts. Narn’s magical legacy is still whispered about by scholars and mystics, with some claiming that his experiments left lasting, mystical scars on the island itself. Despite these lingering tales of magic, Berin Po’s greatest infamy comes from a much darker chapter in its more recent history.
In the year 2028, the young King Fyntin of Remon, only 28 years old, was assassinated on the island during what was meant to be a peaceful visit. His death sent shockwaves through the kingdom, and his cousin, Ledrin II, just 4 years old at the time, ascended the throne. Consumed by grief and rage, Ledrin’s regents enacted swift and brutal retribution. The people of Berin Po, who had no proven connection to the assassination, were slaughtered to the last in a merciless act of vengeance. The island has remained desolate ever since, with its once-thriving community wiped out, leaving behind only empty ruins and dark memories.
Today, Berin Po is a place of ghostly isolation. The remnants of old stone buildings and crumbled walls stand in stark contrast to the wild, untamed landscape that has reclaimed much of the island. The ruins are silent, save for the howling winds and the cries of seabirds that nest along the cliffs. Few dare to visit the island, believing it to be cursed by the spirits of those wrongfully slain in King Fyntin’s name.
Despite its grim history, the island remains of interest to some—particularly mages and scholars who continue to seek out traces of Narn Kellar’s magical legacy. Some claim that the island’s isolation and tragedy have imbued it with a unique, powerful energy, though this is more the subject of rumor than fact. Yet, for the superstitious and those with a sense of history, Berin Po is a place to be avoided, a grim reminder of the capriciousness of power and the darkness that sometimes festers in the heart of the Helerin Archipelago.
To this day, the name Narn of Berin Po is spoken with a mix of awe and caution, and Ledrin II's brutal act of retribution is remembered as one of the most cruel and bloody moments in the history of Remon.
