Seal

The Seal is a common sea creature found along the coastlines of Helerin, known for its playful nature and remarkable swimming abilities. These mammals are highly social and can often be seen lounging on rocky shores or diving through the coastal waters in search of food. Seals are a familiar sight for coastal communities, and their presence is both valued for their role in the marine ecosystem and occasionally for their pelts and meat.

Physical Appearance

Seals have sleek, streamlined bodies covered in thick, short fur that helps insulate them from cold waters. Their coloration varies from grey to dark brown, often with spotted patterns. They typically grow between five and seven feet long and have powerful flippers that allow them to navigate effortlessly through the water. Their large, expressive eyes help them see clearly in the ocean's depths, while their whiskers provide sensory information about their surroundings.

Habitat

Seals are most commonly found along the rocky coastlines and sheltered bays of Helerin, particularly near the Seynan Islands and the northern shores of Forbin and Remon. They prefer areas with abundant food sources, such as fish and squid, and places where they can haul out onto rocks or beaches to rest. These animals are highly adaptable and can thrive in both colder and warmer coastal waters, though they tend to avoid overly harsh, stormy seas.

Behaviour

Seals are social animals that live in groups, often forming colonies on rocky shores or isolated beaches. They spend much of their time in the water hunting for fish, squid, and other marine life, using their agility and speed to catch prey. On land, they are more sluggish, but they make up for it with their playful behavior, frequently seen interacting with each other through vocalizations and physical contact. Mating season occurs in the late summer, with females giving birth to pups the following spring.

Geographic Distribution

Seals are found along the coastlines of Helerin, particularly in the colder northern regions, such as the coasts of Forbin, Remon, and the Seynan Islands. They also inhabit the coastal waters of Mar Miskun, though in smaller numbers. While their primary habitats are rocky shores and sheltered bays, they are sometimes seen swimming near fishing vessels, hoping to scavenge an easy meal.

Interaction with People

The Seal holds a special place in coastal cultures across Helerin. While they are sometimes hunted for their pelts and meat, they are more often respected as part of the marine ecosystem. Coastal communities value Seals for their role in maintaining fish populations and keeping the waters healthy. However, there are occasional conflicts, as Seals are known to raid fish traps and nets. In some regions, their pelts are used for clothing, and seal oil is used in lamps and for waterproofing materials.
