Daltael

The Savage Island

Located south of Ruh and east of Rosscot, Daltael is most well known of the Savage Isles, the group of almost unexplored islands to the south of the Haan Archipelago inhabited by extremely hostile societarians.
All accounts and information regarding Daltael came from the very few people that escaped the slave trade after being captured by Daltaelian ships or from observations made from safe distance, making this one of the great mysteries of the archipelago.

Geography

Daltael's coasts have been described mostly from a distance indicating green plains through the island.
The presence of hirschmalls sighted from the coast suggests the existence of at least one white forest area, though none have been found at the moment.   A main river has been found at about the centre of the north side, which is presumed to run through the centre of the island and fork at least once, and a minor expedition done from Rosscot Camp sighted the opening of a minor river on the northwest coast.
A very small island was reported to be separate from the mainland on the area closest to Ruh's south coasts.

Natural Riches

Legar by Naelín
Hirschmalls and legars have been documented on the coasts of Daltael.   Accounts from survivors also describe trelises and idradeltas being bred in the Daltaelian settlements, and some unidentified species of domesticated big beast being used to plough the fields and transport cargo.
Very little has been described about the island's flora.

Inhabitants

Very little is known about the societarians of Daltael, other than that the ones described have been of segmented and waterland silky subspecies.
Every interaction between the Daltaelian and the people from the Trade Isles has resulted in hostility from the formers, including many instances of murder, kidnapping and enslavement towards the northeasterners, leading to these people to be considered "savages".

The "gigantolyraiks"

Some of the very few accounts that could be gathered from the even fewer people that managed to escape capture by the Daltaelian alive mention the existence of settlements with a mixed population of societarians and giant, intelligent lyraik-like creatures capable of communicating with the societarian natives through some sort of language different from pacts.   These giant raptors were described as wearing jewellery adorning their body and were noted to appear socially superior to the Daltaelian societarians, and behaving more brutally towards prisoners than those.   While there is no reason to disbelieve the recollections of survivors, there is also no other proof of their existence or sightings by anybody other than those escapees, so these are still considered an unconfirmed species.

Danae by Naelin
The cartographer Danae from the City of Birdland in Thaur was commissioned to draw a map of the Haan Archipelago for the second edition of The Book of the Habits and Beasts, published in the 3rd of Birthing, 3 E.Ru.   Danae took advantage of the enclyclopaedia's team of researchers to gather precise information and went himself into research expeditions to survey remote areas. His work resulted in what is considered the most accurate and widespread map of the Archipelago to this day, which details even most of the coasts of the Savage Isles.

I really love the way this article is pieced together from survivor testimony and aborted expeditions. Makes Daltael seem both dangerous and mysterious. The gigantolyraiks are a terrifying possibility.
