WorldEmber 2024 judging -- a Language Template follow up

Words, words, words...

#WorldEmber is all about hitting that magical target of 10k words and my post-December mind got hung up on a follow up on all 35+ articles I had a pleasure to read. So.. I wrote around 300 words. Then again, if all of the judges went that path, we'd have around 23 x 300 = 6900 words. The stream would likely enter the realm of 3+ hrs, making it a director's cut of WorldEmber Stream, but I'm digressing.

I'm here to shed some more light on the #judging of the #Language template and share a few articles, which caught my attention.

General stuff

Language is more than grammar and quirky signs. It's a time-travel machine. Language is a bridge between the generations, sometimes several generations. It may be a broken bridge, but a bridge nonetheless.

What I was looking for were stories. Stories of the people bound together by the common beliefs, perspectives and perceptions; the language. Stories of how it originated, how it thrived and died. My ideal was an article that would read lightly, tell a story and provide enough building blocks, so I could play with the language. I had an attention span of a goldfish so the form was equally important.

For the judging itself I sorted the titles based on the number of Views; ascending. This was to level out the bias of the "High Views == High Quality" mindset.

Honourable mentions

There were some articles, which in my personal opinion deserve an honourable mention. These are, in the order as they were read:

  1. "Argentian Common" by Lady Wynter - a concise take on a language used in trade
  2. "Silken Tongue" by Heavy - interesting take on writing with sound by using threads of different types and the nature of the wind
  3. "The Language of Nharith - the tongue of forgotten light" by ptahsekhet - clever idea of parts of the language being "lost in translation" and impossible to reproduce, leading to its gradual change
  4. "Claw Scuff Stepping" by Brinsmead - communication between dragon riders and dragons through dancing
  5. "Tongue Flashing" by elspeth87 - a fun and quirky one with reptile-shaped Suuu passing information on a distance

The winning combination

And finally there was an article that had an interesting story, read lightly and had enough quirky stuff (writing system + grammar) to play with. It was Aiterean by Dhelian.

"Aiterean" kept the information to an engaging minimum, while making me state new questions in the process. I liked the origin story and how it led to the evolution of the language. The "one and/or many" theme popped up several times -- in the language, the physical distribution of the Brelish and the multitude of dialects, and I enjoyed how it tied everything together. The script was fun to decipher as well -- it was a small but neat idea to use an alternative name in the title.

Some, less approachable "language rule chunks" were isolated to form clearly distinct sections topped with a packed dictionary (3k+ words). Smart choice to not risk losing the reader on the technical intricacies.

Feedback, anyone?

I kept notes throughout the judging period, so if anyone submitted their Language (and had the Competitor mode on) and would like a written feedback on their article, I'll be happy to help. You can reach out in the comment section or in the Discord server.

Finally, a huge "thank you" to the Competitors for submitting 30+ dialects of creativity and imagination.

  Good luck and take care!

I know I've been kinda quiet recently

Good timezone to everyone!
I know that I've been kinda quiet here on WorldAnvil after the conclusion of #WorldEmber. To be honest, I've been dealing with IRL situations that required my full attention. Nothing major as of this moment, but things that needed me to plan some adjustments if or when needed.
I've also been taking it easy on posting new content in my world after #WorldEmber while I worked on other things. I do plan on posting new content again sometime soon, but for now it will be limited to community updates and edits to my content already viewable in my world (with the exception of any content that is currently being judged for the special categories in #WorldEmber2024 I'm not touching those until after the Awards Ceremony).

WE2024 Technology Short List

Hi folks! The short list for the #WorldEmber24 Technology Award, in alphabetical order, is: I've given stickers to all short list articles! And it was a tough decision. To make the short list, I was looking for articles that didn't just explain a piece of unique and interesting technology in an engaging way. I was looking for articles that used tech to tell an important story about the world and its people. All four of these articles did a great job of thinking bigger than the invention itself.   Great work everybody!

World Ember last week - magical sciences & political stakes articles

Happy New year everyone!   I hop you all had time to relax/have fun in December whether you completed World Ember or not. This last 1.5 week, I focused mostly on:   Magical science articles:
  • "Prime elements and magic": how different atoms interact or not with magic, how this impact the magic system, and the race to discover new atoms
  • "Rune-based magic": My MC's field of study. What it is and its basic rules.
  • "Forging magic": The magic of my MC's best friend. What it is and its basic rules.
  • "Parisian blue - the new fashionable dye": About the chemistry race to discover new elements or molecules, and the resulting new blue dye.
  • Political stakes at the start of the novel:
  • "The Two Spanish Wars": explaining how the current king got elected, declared his enemy a Dark Lord and banish him.
  • " Frequency changing magic": what makes the Chosen One so special.
  • Prime elements and magic
    Physical / Metaphysical Law | Mar 1, 2025

The elements that are the base of all matter & determine how an object will interact with magic: no interaction, weak to very good conduction, absorption, repulsion, & weird interaction. A quest to discover new elements & their application is ongoing.

    Rune-based magic
    Technology / Science | Jan 4, 2025

Runic magic is the combination of a symbolic script & geometric patterns to affect the flow & properties of magic. It fixes & stabilises magic & makes it flow more efficiently. It is used to make wards or craft magical artefacts but is hard & dangerous.

    Forging magic
    Technology / Science | Jan 4, 2025

Forging magic is the combination of chemistry, alchemy, enchantment, and it aims to imbue deeply a material with magic to make this magic stronger and more resistant. The material is then ready to be either used directly or worked on by other Masters.

    Parisian Blue—the new fashionable dye
    Material | Jan 1, 2025

Chemical research is a top priority for the glory of France and the supremacy of our industry and army. But in addition to its serious aspects, it can also be fun & lucrative, as exemplified by the invention of the new Parisian blue dye.

    The Two Spanish Wars
    Military Conflict | Jan 4, 2025

Two wars have opposed us to Spain in the past 50 years. Started for the possession of a mine in the Pyrénnées where some of the new primes elements had been discovered, they have brought us glory but also a Dark Lord's apparition & the current civil war.

    Frequency-changing magic
    Spell | Jan 4, 2025

The frequency of magic particles is important for determining spell effects & how different magics & artefacts work together. The Chosen One who'll defeat the Dark Lord is believed to be the next person found who's able to change them instinctively.

The centerpiece of my Worldember efforts, mixing real history with fantastic fiction

I wrote many articles using real medieval history and applying a fantasy filter to see how active gods and magic users would change things. I wanted to figure what aspects of medieval society would be mostly the same, what would be different and what would be completely different.

I am vain, but I own it

Is it vanity to make the period time including my birthday and my late father's birthday and my parent's anniversary a time of great mystical importance in my fantasy world. Yes, yes it is.

WorldEmber News & A New Challenge!

I finally got to 10k words of worldbuilding for this WE! And this time, I am actually pleased with all my entries, which is a change from last year where I didn't like some of the articles I wrote. I am probably just gonna expand on the stubs I made but I won't be writing any bigger articles for now! Good luck to everyone else with their WE goals!

    WorldEmber 100%!

I successfully hit my goal of 10000 words on the cultures, countries and societies across my world for #WorldEmber ! I even managed a whole bunch of art done for a few of of the articles, and I'm super pleased with what I managed to finish. Now I've completed my specific goal, I'm hoping to smash out more words on some random article topics to make the fun little percentage bar go up even more before the end of WorldEmber, and maybe enter in a few more of the special categories! Happy writing folks, and feel free to check out my WorldEmber articles!

    WorldEmber 2024 Wrap-Up

Okay I thought I had another one in me but I don't so I'm just gonna leave it at the 2 articles I've finished by now and start wrapping up. I'm hoping everyone else had a great #WorldEmber this year!!!
This one was a real doozy I'll tell ya that much, there was absolutely NO reason to make it as hard as I did other than "Yo but it'd be SO cool/funny if I did" and you know what? I did. I absolutely Locked In and finished everything I set out to finish in December and it only costed me a little bit of my sanity. It's not like I had much use for it anyways.
For those who don't know, I spent the first half of WorldEmber finishing this Zine I started working on and off since February. So basically I spent the first half of WorldEmber not doing WorldEmber. What's the Zine about? Uh, okay so basically I made an issue of Dragon Magazine but for my own world. It's filled with art, 2 stories, some lore and a collection of my unsolicited opinions. You should totally read it cause I'm really proud of myself.

    Dungeonomicon

After that I took a few days off before getting to work on WorldEmber, so I transferred this One Shot I made for the Zine (I timed it so that I wrote all of this during December) . It's genuinely SO much better than my first go at writing one I gotta say.
    The Lord of Lightning
    Plot | Mar 17, 2025

    | PF2e One Shot | After an Escort Quest into the Cloudburst Coastside goes predictably wrong, your party encounters what the local Elves call a Raikunath, a name that once meant "Lord of Lightning".

And after that I wrote what is now one of my favorite articles to date, this one had been a LONG time coming and it was the idea I was most excited to write for WorldEmber. But I'm sure that was clear judging from how hard I went in on it and also how I just called it afterwards vdsbfvjkh
    Lichdom
    Rank/Title | Apr 3, 2025

The road to avoid death is paved only by casting away that which made life not worth losing.

So yeah, that was my #WorldEmber2024 in a nutshell. I shall now take my highly anticipated "I have been working creatively nonstop for 5 months straight and I need to BREATHE" break, with a short Reading Challenge thrown in there as a treat. That's all for now, have a good one!!!

    Worldemberweek 3.5

Happy Christmas to everyone who celebrates!   I hope everyone who wants to has had time to have fun for WE between all the eating :p For week 3 and half of week 4, I wrote a few articles I love:
  • Adélaïde's research project: diving more into magical science.
  • The Drissoire Incident; why it's important to do your homework and to care about basic runes safety (Adélaïde's favourite event to mention in class).
  • Sarine's fibre: a material used to make clothes for rituals because of its unique properties.
  • More character articles, in particular the love interest, Herr Streiff.
  • Adélaïde's research project
    Document | Jan 4, 2025

Adélaïde's research project report & the abstract for her presentation proposal for the Chinese envoys. Five years of research & hundreds of experiments into the materials used to make the runic designs traced on the ground when crafting warding amulets.

    The Drissoire incident
    Generic article | Jan 1, 2025

All runes students and practitioners should keep the Drissoire incident in mind: a full squadron of freshly-graduted officers, all wiped out in a few seconds because their arrogance led them to think they were above basic rune work practice.

    Sarine fibres for ritual clothing
    Material | Jan 4, 2025

Special fibres containing a unique combination of lead and zinc that allows magic to pass through them without interacting with them. This has made them extremely useful for rituals and artefact crafting.

    Herr Hugues Streiff
    Character | Jan 2, 2025

An Austrian Ward Master and diplomat, sent to help the Ottomans guide the Chinese envoys through Europe and during their sojourn in Lille. A well-educated man, curious about magic & enjoying collaborative projects.

    10k words achieved!

Just in time for Christmas Eve, I've reached my goal of 10k words without BBCode. There are only eight articles so far, but I'm very proud of it, as many of the articles this time contain some small drawings of mine and we still have about 13 days left until Worldember ends. Maybe I can write one or two more important articles for Layida. Some articles may contain a few beloved Anvils that I've integrated into my world. Maybe you'll find your name too (naturally adapted to my language, so stay tuned ;)?
I'm most proud of so far:
I would like to thank everyone for the support so far during this Worldember and for the many small and large presents and your comments. It really means a lot to me, especially because the last three months have not been quite so wonderful. I especially hope that with my eighth article written during WE, I'll take a big step that closes these months and opens the door to a better 2025.
I wish everyone a wonderful, harmonious and peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year. I look forward to reading many of your WE articles.

  • Catrao - The tropical home of our newest friend, Arelio!
  • - Brasara Caverns - A cave network in Catrao, housing some treat-loving khiroph populations. I think this is my favorite of the day!   I also worked on a few articles connected to our dear Ebi!
  • Nahuara - Ebi's homeland! They've got a unique craft they share with the world, and it's a neat little detail :)
  • Iverra - Ebi's destination! At least, the first on her Path to Adventure! I'm very pleased with the additions to this article today.
  • Oh! And both Gidren and Brynna have new art in their articles!   I'm happy to have had so many of you with me while adding more words to my worlds! More to come, next weekend! You can always pop by my whole WorldEmber catalog here to see what else I'm up to!

    The challenge marches forward!

Currently, we have 7 amazing entries with a wide variety of interpretations to the prompt! I have even found a few worlds that I've taken an interest in, sometimes the amazing authors on WA go unnoticed. But, wow there really are a phenomenal amount of creative minds here!
The challenge is still running until Jan 14th, so plenty of time to relax over the holidays, belt out more lore for your worlds, railing through World Ember content, and maybe finding new inspiration!
I've started drafting some ideas for the hidden badge and I'm happy with some of them. Others have already been scrapped, but nonetheless! I'm looking forward to seeing what ideas come out of the community!

Can you believe we’re already halfway through December? They say time flies when you’re having fun, but what’s happening this month is truly shocking! Like many of you, WorldEmber has become my favorite challenge of the year- and for so many good reasons. The inspiration I gain from it is incredible, and I love the opportunity to explore such amazing lore from worlds that are so unique! It really is a blessing to be part of this community.

As we move forward, I’d love to share some of the articles I had a great time writing!

    WorldEmber Week 2

Hi everyone, I hope you're all (still) having fun for WE!
For week 2, I wrote a few articles I love:
  • "Pranking at the universities" - to give me a few ideas of stupid things the students can do.
  • "The Jameux's Jewellery business" & "The Lefebvres' forge" - two ads I had fun making for the shop of my MC's parents and for the shop of the family of my MC's best friend.
  • "Herr Streiff's illusion making pendant" - getting in my MC's mind as she examines it and try to figure how it works and its limits.
  • "Nicodème's disease" - poor Nicodème is the son of my MC's best friend, and she's trying to figure what disease he has and how she can help him.

  •
    Pranking at the university
    Tradition / Ritual | Mar 1, 2025

A fine & ancient tradition upheld by students since the foundation of the University of Lille. Aimed at buildings, statues, friends, disliked classmates, or even professors, they are a fun way to practice magic & gain experience in managing group project.

    The Jameux's jewellery business
    Organization | Mar 1, 2025

Adélaïde's family's jewellery business. Her parents combine their skills to design original, elegant and powerful jewellery for our clients, while she regularly consults for them when they need more complex rune magic and wards.

    The Lefebvres' forge
    Organization | Mar 1, 2025

The forge of Delphine's family, located in Roubaix, near Lille. Her parents and wife work there and she occasionally consult for them. They specialise in protection magic such as shields and armours or everyday items.

    Herr Streiff's illusion-making pendant
    Item | Jan 1, 2025

An intriguing artefact worn by Herr Streiff. It can control te way light is reflected in its perimeter of action, thus effectively creating illusions. It makes sense for someone playing the role of a bodyguard to have something like that.

    Nicodème's disease
    Condition | Mar 1, 2025

The child of Adélaïde's best friend is terribly sick, and nothing the doctors have done has been able to cure him. Adélaïde investigates what's going on and how to help him...

WorldEmber Update from the Owlworks: The 10k Line is Breached!

    by Strixxline
Immensely proud am I to announce that tonight marks 10k+ new words of worldbuilding across Malkora and Ayun Sovos! What a tremendous cause for celebration! I can hear the cheers and confetti cannons already, but they really ought to quiet down because it is bed time at this moment... We'll celebrate tomorrow!   I'm sending infinite love to those of you in the community who sat with me during my hours-long Sunday Sprints stream today to watch me cross that 10k line — your encouragement and enthusiasm made the milestone all the more special to me! 10k in ten days (less, actually, but I hear that's an unofficial challenge floating around ;) )... the Strixxline who started participating in WorldEmber for the first time in 2018 would be positively floored by this progress!

    So, what's new?

I'm so glad you asked! As you may know, I've started diving into the realm of storytelling, at long last, and these stories have been the driving force behind my worldbuilding this month.   Might I interest you in...

The Many Characters Across my Stories?

I invite you to check out the main protagonists of Malkora's storyline, Fleeting Harvest, Gidren and Brynna! Might you also be interested in the latest chapter of their story?
    3 | White Walls
    Prose | Dec 1, 2024

Chapter three of the Fleeting Harvest, where our protagonist makes his first breakthrough.

I also offer you the plucky main character of Ayun Sovos's storyline, The Path to Adventure, Ebi! Ah, but how about some of the other lovely characters who make up the Path to Adventure cast (so far)?
  • Arelio, the Leafweaver
  • Farmer Emrys
  • Nana Liliwen
  • Gram-Nana
  • Or some important characters we know from Ebi's daydreams, that we might meet one day?
  • Keari
  • Ymeta
  •

How about some neat places and things in Ayun Sovos?

Come get to know Brightfield, with locations like Lilipond Acres and Iverra — and this is a pretty neat plant you might find on your way there as you pass through the fields: Brisk Nettle.

I appreciate every read and piece of feedback!

More information is being gathered for all of these articles by the day... but what might you be itching to know? I'm open to feedback on what might be "missing" all throughout the month, so don't be afraid to leave comments inquiring about different things! If I know there are certain articles that people are most interested in seeing developed, I'll be more likely to spend extra time fleshing them out! ^^   See my whole WorldEmber catalog here!   Cheers, to the remainder of the month. The words are flying, and I'm delighted by so much of the community's work already!
    Much love, your forever-feral Strixxline

    A New #UnofficialChallenge for Your #WorldEmber #Snowglobe Collection!

    We've all done it!

You sit down at your computer to write, and you get halfway into your new article and

    BLAMMO!

You are struck out of the blue with the need, the urge, the compulsion to create something that goes along with the article that you're making. It might be a chronicle to organize several events and locations. It might be a timeline to track your writing progress. It could be a drawing to illustrate an insect's wing. It might even be a map of the island you've dedicated your writing to.

    cough.

Whatever it is...in the end, it doesn't count toward your word goal. And that's ok! Because you are still enriching your world, your readers, and the entire universe with your creative spirit! So go forth! Waste WorldEmber writing time! It'll all be OK in the end!

Im Kinda proud of myself ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I just wanted to take a moment to pat myself on the back, I have crushed my world ember goal of 10k, I've been rapidly expanding my world's background lore and history. Since I got back from traveling, the total word count has gone from 41k then, to 86k now, which is more than double. I now sit at a comfortable 150 articles, and my world is improving every day, I'm generally quite proud of all the articles I've made this world ember, although not all of them are equal there are some I am quite proud of, both in the 1k+ word counts, and below it, I have been making a lot of new articles, so I highly recommend checking out my summary article linked below here. however, my favorite recent work has been on an older article, the one about dragons, that I reworked completely from scratch, which is in my opinion one of the best I've ever made.
World Ember is not over, and I will not stop making things, but having already completed my goal, I now want to take a bit more time to properly think articles through before starting them, I have realized that I write a lot better if I follow my nose, rather than trying to force myself to write specific things.
I hope you all have a good day, and I wish you all great inspiration! Goodbye, and happy worldbuilding <3

    Worldember status update!

Worldember flows so good! I feel blessed to be a part of this and the choice to join World Anvil six months ago was frankly one of the best decisions I made this year! Congratulation to everyone participating in this. In just a week I've discovered so many great creators it blows my mind! And now it is time for a shameless self promotion of some articles I really enjoyed writing! I would love to hear your thoughts on them! If you have any suggestions on articles I should read (yours or someone else's) please tell me in the comments! So, here we go!

    #WorldEmber Update! Cities Finished!

So far on my main goals, I've gotten two categories done! I finished up the articles on the last two Vampire Clans on the Thinbloods and Clan Tzimisce, and I finished all of the remaining Cities of the area, where our story lays!
All of those have gotten me to 9,100 words or so, so I'm getting really close! Now, when I was doing my homework, my plan was to finish the different Mage Organizations next, but seeing everyone's amazing articles has gotten me back in the fantasy itch, so I'm going to be deviating from that, at least temporarily, to focus on some Edda Articles! So stay tuned for plenty of fantasy worldbuilding here soon!

    Dragonguard Progress Report (DPR-4)

Issue 4 - With 20k words for NovelEmber down, it's time to get right into WorldEmber!
Follow the Legends of the Dragonguard for updates, challenges, and more!

Well, I've completed my NovelEmber goal of 20k words a few days ago — a 30 day writing streak at almost 21k words! I'll have to add what I've written in the manuscripts here on WA for rough draft readers or something, but you can read what I wrote for every day on my Substack.
But with November over now, it's time to go right into the next event: WorldEmber! I've got a backlog of stuff I need to create pages for.
And if you want to get notifications for only certain things within my world, I've set up a Notifications page!
Also, I've added content warning tags on the homepage, to denote the kinds of sensitive content is within the world. Any page that has such content is tagged and will display a spoiler at the top.
I've also created a page with more information about the Content Warnings on the site.

Oh boy oh boy it's that time of the year again. Only this time I'm doing the creative project equivalent of FNAF 20/20/20/20 Mode, Dark Souls 3 SL1, Halo 2 LaSO, perhaps even The Final Horizon Update pre-patch on Extreme difficulty, or just a regular playthrough of Sonic Unleashed.
In addition to that I'm also going to drop what I've written for #NovelEmber later today or maybe at like 3am or something idk man. It's gotta be some of my favorite short stories I've written so far BY far. But man this has been a crazy few months. I'm hanging on by a thread but that thread is like an inch thick. November was a busy month!

Hello beautiful nerds! I hope this was a productive and happy month for all of you. For me, November passed on a flash since I got many things happening at once. My seasonal work was over and I found myself having plenty of free time. I had some rest which I needed, saw my friends who I had missed and played some games which is always a treat! As for worldbuilding, it was a month of preparation! I wasn;t engaged with Novelember (maybe next year), but I had a blast participating in four amazing Unofficial Challenges: Splash Challenge by Mochi, Mapvember 2024 by Tillerz, Fires of Creation and Longest Journey Chapter 3 by Tyrdal.

    Worldember Preparation

The rest of my time went into preparing for Worldember. This will be my first time joining this challenge and the hype is real! I was eager for it anyway, but the excitement about it from everyone is infectious! I finished my homework and have a clear image in my head of what I want to write about. I will focus on regions and geographic locations so I did some warm up by revistiting some of my old articles that needed some refinment. To give you a taste, here are the two I liked the most writing:

Help me decide what to work on this WorldEmber!

This WorldEmber I am asking the community for guidance, specifically on what I shall work on first this WorldEmber. With how my brain works, I will gravitate towards several projects throughout December, but for the start of the event I want to have a solid idea on what to write. That's where you guys come in!
In my prep article I have given a short description of fifteen planets, and anyone can comment which one is their favourite. Whichever gets the most comments, I'll write about first! Some of these planets are very fleshed out already, with over a hundred articles, and others have only ever been mentioned once in my world!

The future for ValentineDM (That's me! :D) - Reflecting

As #Novelember enters it's back half, I am looking and thinking that I'm most likely not going to hit the grand goal. That's fine and dandy, this was more about the motivation than actually hitting 50k, but it does make me think of and want to start anticipating my steps from here.
As we go into December with good ol' #Worldember, I'm going to still be focusing on Tacoma By Night, as I outlined in my homework article. After and interweaving that, however, I have a whole slew of projects that are on my mind.
Firstly, I have my primary fantasy setting, Edda, and at least two or three of the individual stories that make that up, the first of which I've already started to write.
Then, I have an urban fantasy/otherworld story in my own setting that I've done some work on, and an action adventure western themed world that's starting to take rapid formation in my mind.
My World of Darkness stuff is loads of fun, and I want to get more of it done, but it admittedly might take more of a back burner position come January, as while just about every character, place, and plot is of my creation, it is derivative work at the end of the day.
I do want to start thinking of monetization or opportunities like that, as I am confident enough in my writing (I mean I have a whole stinkin' degree for it too!) but I am left with a lot of uncertainty and anxiety about, essentially, meeting my deadlines.
But regardless, no matter how much is up in the air, folks can expect plenty more ValentineDM Content coming throughout the year. Prose, Articles, maybe even some art here and there! And I've even been contemplating videos on my settings if I can work out the technical stuff~!
I hope everyone else is having a great Novelember marathon so far, and that the future stretches on for us all!

    #NovelEmber Progress and #WorldEmber Prep

I've been a bit quieter than usual this November, because I have been working on #NovelEmber, but as we're just over halfway through the month I thought I'd do a little update.

    WorldEmber Prep

I've really been enjoying the WorldEmber prep. It's that strange thing where I find myself getting inspired but also trying to save up all of my ideas to start writing them in December. (It's one of the reasons I haven't written my latest entry for #TheLongestJourney yet). Really can't wait to start!

I've written almost 30k words for my new book which is set in The Wilds (see World Block below). I know a lot of those words are going to change when it comes to re-reading and editing and so on, but it feels good to get the words out and to start connecting to these new characters I haven't met before!

The Splash Challenge is now over!

Last Tuesday, to celebrate my birthday and just for a bit of fun, I released a week-long unofficial challenge! The theme was water, as opposed to Tyrdal's Flashfire Challenge, where the theme was water. It closed midnight last night, and I ended up with 29 entries!! That's far more than I was expecting for a shorter challenge, and I'm so grateful for the people who took the time to write an entry, and felt inspired to do so.

Help me decide what to work on for #WorldEmber :D

Preparations have started for the best competition of the year, and in my prep article I've asked people to help me choose what to focus on! I have hundreds of planets in my world, and I've chosen a lucky 15 for people to pick from. Now I can't focus on one project like this for long, so I'll definitely write about many different planets during WorldEmber! But I'd like a plan for what to work on first, haha.

#WorldEmber off to the races! Follow through for updates!

First day in and we're already ~2.5k words down! To check out unrestrained (and largely unedited) Mage the Ascension goodness, click below! If you're unsure what that is, read on! If you want to stay up to date with my writings, follow the manuscript! If you want more urban fantasy-horror worldbuilding, follow the world Tacoma by Night! If you like that and/or high fantasy adventure, then follow my profile as a whole to get everything I produce! And if you're going that far, go to my bio and hit me up on my socials to keep updated on all that and more!

    Tacoma by Night: Magnum Opus

Don't know what Mage the Ascension is? Let me give you a run down! It's a part of the World of Darkness setting, which houses Vampire the Masquerade, Werewolf the Apocalypse, and much more! It's bones are full of urban fantasy and horror with tragedy and gloom abound, but the character flow in Mage tends to be less monstrous and doomed for failure than the others, although not without it's dramatic pitfalls of fate.   Tacoma by Night: Magnum Opus takes that core premise, puts it in the specific urban environment of Tacoma and it's own issues, adds in a fun heaping of found family (and mb some found romance as well~) with a rebellious edge asking "Do we have to just accept the way things are?"

New art, and a pixel art gallery to showcase it :D

I've been making lots of pixel art in early preparation for WorldEmber this year! When I was on stream last weekend, Ademal suggested that a gallery page would be a great place for people to find and view art for my world - so I made one!

State of the Manifold - May 2024 (May-be Doing New Things Edition)

    Howdy all!
I don’t have anything quippy to open with this edition, but the toasty weather of June is fast approaching, and that means it’s just about time for the monthly update post per my New Year's Resolutions. Without further ado, let’s get into the updates!
Even though there wasn’t a major challenge in May, I spent most of this month riding high after finishing the short story Derelict Over Sapfran and used that momentum to keep working on the world surrounding it. The story of the ESCI Revelation and her crew has been bouncing around in my brain for longer than the Manifold Sky has - really, for longer than I’ve been here on WorldAnvil - so it feels comfy to get back into the swing of worldbuilding for it for awhile. Most of these articles are for various bits of tech, but I did lay the groundwork for yet another card game that would be playable in the real world. Anyways, here’s a few examples of what I’ve been cooking on this front:

None of this is to say that I haven’t been still working on the Manifold Sky setting in the background, of course. Most of my work in May centered around aspects of the Manifold’s religious communities. I’m looking forward to doing more with the Manifold Sky once Summer Camp 2024 rolls around; I find the prompts do a good job of getting the creative juices flowing where otherwise I’d be distracted by other projects. Here’s a few of the Manifold Sky articles I’ve been working on:

Anyways, that’s all for today. Every time it gets warm, I get excited for the #SummerCamp Challenge more than almost any other event on WA except #WorldEmber. Are you planning to participate in SC24? Let me know what you think in the comments, and good luck on your worldbuilding efforts in June!
      Regards, BCGR_Wurth

    WorldEmber's Best Body of Work!

I am so beyond touched that Solaris was voted Best Body of Work for Worldember 2023! Thank you so much to everyone who voted!
It's wild to think that Solaris is about to wrap up its second year. What started with a dream of a war against the sun, is now the biggest project I've ever worked on! I've never experienced so much love and excitement for something I'm working on, and to think it would be with one of the genres I've been most scared to write!

SUMMONING THE FURRIES FOR A FINAL WORLDEMBER HURRAH. ETHNIS IS THE WORLD TO JOIN, EXPLORE, AND PLAY. #worldember2023

As #WorldEmber2023 reaches its close, it's time for to choose our favorites, and I can't just let that go by without shouting about a few of the articles I'm proud of.   This year I fleshed out the corners of Ethnis dedicated to body modding, especially regarding how furries and other anthro-identifying people exist in a transhumanist society. It's one thing to buy some new traits and organs, it's another to use those traits to not just extend who you are, but to self-actualize the creature which has always lurked in your mind and beneath your flesh.   These are the articles related to this topic.
    • Anthros are what you call Transmogs with high aspirations towards becoming beastly
    • Wetware is all the squishy fun of sculpting your anatomy into something new
    • Wetware Drivers will make your neck itch
    • Soluma is a story about a very good dog
    • Psioware Drivers are the combination of Wetware and Soluma to create souls that work as wetware drivers
Articles marked with a ★ are especially good, in my humble opinion. Worth a like, or even a 'Best Of' recommendation, perhaps?
If nothing else, I hope you enjoy reading. I look forward to seeing what characters you make ♥   — Jacklyn

    When life gives you potatoes...

I've come to the realization that I am probably not going to have the time this month to write a lot, which means that a New Year's resolution article is seeming unlikely at this point.
However, to make up for that, I'm going to like and comment on as many articles as I can, especially because everyone put out so much quality writing during WorldEmber that NEEDS to be acknowledged.
And in case I haven't said it already, a wonderful new year for one and all. May 2024 be even more productive for you than 2023 was!

    December Update + WorldEmber 2023: Wrap-Up!

I know, I know, I've been telling this not long ago. I was so excited when only the time I needed to publish and notify my last work, was seconds before midnight. So, once again, Happy New Year!

    WorldEmber Wrapped Up

As you know, #worldember2023 is over, and I hope everyone have finish the goal! This year I managed to publish 14 articles with a total of, according to the main page, 11,939 words. Compare to 7,203 words last year with 11 entries, I'd say this year is a total success.

Due to my strategies, I have another 13 unfinished articles that I intended to finish according to my pledge back in November, but didn't make it on time. Meaning that I've written 24 articles, but over half was unused. I think I've to redo my workflow next time.

On the bright side, I've finished 2 plots - Quest for the Power Stone and Might of the Power Stone!. I was satisfied by these two plots, despite how rushed the latter was, since them and the Wrath of the Power Stone I did last WorldEmber, are the main world storyline of Terraloga during 2019-20. I finally completed the world's biggest goal, and I'm feeling better than ever!

You can find my full list of all finished articles on my main page, when I crossed the threshold of WorldEmber 2023!.

    2023 Update

To be honest, it's one of the most chaotic years ever. I lost my friend, I lost my jobs twice, and I was about to lose my house to the bank within months. I'm completely lost, and if I don't do everything within the next months from now, I'll lose everything.

Nevertheless, there's a good side to the story. I've been through art communities, and I've been very happy. They were very supportive, I got new friends, and most of all I was able to do art commissions for them. I've found the way to make money, and if I continue to focus on those, I would solve this crisis in no time.

Have you face any crisis and how you solved them? If you're okay to tell, I'll listen.

    January Plan

And with that folk, another success goal in my last year resolution. My mission to post monthly update for a whole 2023, has come to an end! I don't want to make it for another year no more. I've ruined my posting schedule every month, and I wish I'd never do it again. It's over....

Happy New Year and Worldember everyone!

I had a fun Worldember this year. I hit many but not all of my goals, but there is nothing to stop me from going to back to the unwritten topics later.
I am happy that I came in 9th place by word count. Last year I don't think I made the top ten and Nine is a lucky number in Scarterra.

    WE Summary

Happy new year everyone!   I hope you all had fun with #WorldEmber2023 whether or not you were successful in writing as much as you wanted!   This month I managed:
  • to get the 25k words badge
  • to write an article for all templates apart from language, prose, and plot
  • to do a lot of art (even if the pen of my graphic tablet broke on the last day D: )
  •   My favourite articles I wrote this month this month were:
  • Mineral vs organic magitech, an article that set the basis of my solarpunk magic/technology in this world, which then allowed me to write a lot of cool technologies like a variation of internet anchored in the mycelium of a fungi
  • A wall painting competition that you participate in with your neighbours and all the fierce rivalries around it!
  • A flyer from the city council trying to convince people to be nice with the local asshole bird!
  • A little kitten menace that has somehow found its way to the Dark Lord's manor.
  • A kidnapping announcement written by enemies to taunt my empire
  • Globally, I'm very satisfied with how far I've managed to advance my new world, with writing a lot about their solarpunk magitech and their culture :D   You can find the full list of the articles I wrote and a few words of presentation for each here: WorldEmber 2023.   Some of my new art:

    WorldEmber 2023 Wrap-Up

Congratulations to everyone who successfully completed their goals for #WorldEmber2023 and congratulations also go out to everyone who got any words at all written. You have more than you started December with!   I successfully earned my 25K badge and I'm very happy with the worldbuilding that I got done. I intentionally focused on stomping out stubs and intentionally avoided picking up a Dimi Mission. I have a lot of background characters and foundational information to get written down, and WorldEmber is definitely the perfect time and place for it.   I'm super proud of the articles that I wrote at the beginning of WE for the Can Opener and at the end for Sgt. Yahn Sunder. The Can Opener has been a villain in my campaigns for the past year, a herald of a much larger threat. Sgt. Yahn Sunder has been taking up more and more space in my head as a new POV character and I'm enjoying fleshing him out.   I'm going to start going through the articles I'm judging in the Ethnicity Special Category. As of now, there are only 98 entries! I'm looking forward to the lighter work load this time!   I'm gong to write my NYR article shortly and I'm looking for articles to read outside of my challenge category. What are your favorite articles that you've done this World Ember? Share them, I'd love to read them!   #WoWP #WorldEmber

WorldEmber wrap-up, a secret and a Happy New Year!

    WorldEmber

Finishing WorldEmber went almost smoothly, with almost meaning that obviously the entire website will be deleted and rolled back two days before the deadline. Or that things will start breaking. The universe has spoken!

That being said, I finished the competition with a large scale military conflict started by a boy now erased from history, and a short (3.6k+) WIP article about Breadmaking. All three will be given more love in the coming weeks, the breadmaking article in particular if I remember to make some good quality photos.

    Final thoughts

Planning is definitely essential for me and with all the unexpected and attention-demanding stuff popping out throught the month I understand, more than ever the needs for it. It will be rough, but I'm hoping to introduce even more planning into my writing/life schedule. This week I'll be gathering my strenghts and resting and somewhere in the next week will be posting my plans for the January, traditionally including the Reading Challenge.

There is just one more shameful secret I have to share, but that will come after Worldember. It may be one of the reasons I struggled a bit with finding time for writing.
    — Angantyr

    The little secret

And that was starting Duolingo a week before WorldEmber. With all fairness I did not think it anticipate it would stick so well. The plan was to learn Scottish Gaelic since the this WorldEmber was centered round a Celtic-like culture and Scottish Gaelic is my placenamer language of choice. After a month, though, after successfully finishing #worldember2023 and advancing to the Amethyst League I can sum it up the efforts to: Obh obh... Chan eil i cho dona ach mi gu math sgìth.

    Happy New Year, everyone!

    WorldEmber 2023 - 25k reached!

At the beginning of WorldEmber, I decided to shoot for 10k words - I've had a daily goal of 300 words, and by upping that to 325 I was pretty sure I could make that happen. I'm happy to say that I made my goal early, and then continued on to reach a final total of 27,191 words across 108 articles. I also joined the new #ArticlesAnonymous chapter, and I am very thankful for all their support during this challenge and looking forward to our future endeavors as a chapter. Happy New Year to all!

Well, I *did* think I was done.

I really did think I was finished, and then I wrote a pretty big article fleshing out the religion for one of the peoples/communities I hadn't done yet. D: But I started and it just was flowing, so, 2,000 words or so later.... here it is! And of course now I'm cranking out the details and deities themselves. :D The gap between 25k and 50k words feels insurmountable, but I definitely passed 25k far on accident ;). 2023 Wrap-Up

Well, everyone. World Ember is drawing to a close as is 2023. Another year has gone by already. I don't know what the next year holds, but I'm sure it'll be full of as many ups and downs as this year.   I had a several goals for 2023, I'm not sure if I was able to accomplish any of them. (I forgot about them when February rolled around.) But there's always next year!   I had a blast this year being able to take part in the official and unofficial challenges. A special thanks to those who were willing to have unofficial challenges. (Maybe that's something I'll do this next year.)   Summer Camp and World Ember have been some of the most fun writing challenges I've done. I was able to expand a couple of my collaborative worlds during SC, and I started a new one! WE went very well. I accomplished my goal of 10K and I expanded my new world by a fair bit. There's still a lot that I need to work on, but I think I have a pretty solid foundation for it.   I'm still not 100% sure where to go next this new year, but I have a few ideas. (I hope you all look forward to them) Soon I'm hoping to expand each of my worlds and maybe publish my first manuscript! I don't know when, but it's somewhere in my schedule.   Before I go, I would like to say congratulations to all those who were able to accomplish their goals! And even those who didn't, I'm so happy and proud of you anyways! I hope this next year, brings so many more great writing memories!   Thanks to all who likes or reads or follows my work. Thank you so much! It means the world to me. Of course, a huge thanks to my collaborators, without their encouragement and advice I don't know where I'd be.   And thank you, to everyone who read this rather long and rambling post. Have a Happy New Year and Best Wishes to You in World Building!   #worldember2023

Wooo! Just finished all my text for WE and published the last article! I was supposed to draw a lot this month as well....but.....I started playing Baldur's Gate 3. So I didn't get my drawings done. XD I'll draw them later instead. :3...did some character designs for Dana at least. This image won't be in their article. XD; Those have to match, and this one doesn't match my other character article images. XD;;   Anyway, how is your WorldEmber going?

    #WorldEmber2023: A Lesson In Adaptability

They Don't Ask How, They Ask How Many!

As I am forever reminding my loyal Twitch.tv viewers, self care is urgent care. As the sun has faded, I have found myself reacting like the trees and shedding the small things to ensure I have the strength and energy to deal with the big things. I finally achieved the minimum 10,000 words necessary to conquer the WorldEmber challenge, even though I did not reach my start-of-event goal of 50K. To be honest, I let go of that pretty early in the month when it was clear that work pressure coupled with my seasonal depression would make such a goal just too much added strain.

Still, I believe in the old adage, "Shoot for the moon! Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." And so, even though I knew I probably wouldn't achieve 50K, I still set myself the goal so that 'only' achieving 10K would feel like landing among the stars. I did this with the hope that any achievement would feel good at this point in the season.

I was right, this feels amazing!

I spent my efforts mostly in generic articles, exploring some of the people and events that I've been ignoring for a while, but that are proving to be absolutely critical to the functional plot of my novel. Just the rambling sorts of detail dumps that precede proper character developments. Here are all these random facts that I know, so that I can dig into the why behind them at a later time.

I also filled in the largest portion of an article I call "Shit Everyone Across Argentii Knows," so that I have a reference for this general hazy timeline of ages and ages of history. It's less relevant for the novel, but critical for organizing my thoughts and will become the outline for the primer that I'll be working on in the coming weeks.

Which brings me to a quick glance at the question...

    What's Next?!

Well, in addition to continuing to prep for my new Worldbuilding Through the Tarot class that I'll be teaching at GenCon, I'm going to be spending some time revamping both my WA home page and my Patreon offerings. The former needs to be friendlier and more informative for new visitors, and the latter needs to be rewritten to incorporate the new content that I have planned for 2024.

I'm also planning to dig into my CSS and also explore some of the Grandmaster features I've yet to play with.

    WorldEmber

So I was going to try and finish #WorldEmber2023, however I have been having pretty bad mental health issues this month, so I have not been able to really work on articles as much as I wanted to. But I have been trying to take care of myself so that's the most important part. <3 I'm proud of what I did get down tho.

    New art for Malkora!

I don't think I've ever been able to say this during WorldEmber before, but Malkora has new art! Some excellent little sketches cooked up during this week's streams — our final final push stream is tomorrow at 11AM EST!

    I finally hit 10k words for #WorldEmber2023

As I properly started it just after Christmas, I didn't think I would manage it, to be honest. I've needed to do these articles for ages, because they relate to my ongoing #Fantasy manuscript Skirmishes and Schisms.
It's oddly Winter-themed, but not out of choice as such! It just happens to be that S&S is during Winter. Anyway, head to My WorldEmber Page if you want to find out more.
Hope you all have a good new year and all the best for those still finishing off #WorldEmber.

    Reached 25k words for WorldEmber!

I had as objective to reach 10k words, as usual, but this year I've managed to reach 25k words!

And more importantly, I'm pretty happy with what I've written! They are more longer articles than I tend to write, having an average of 1,9k between all my 13 articles. And other than worldbuilding, I've even managed to write prose and do a bit of art! So, I think it's been a pretty fulfilling month!

These are the articles I've written this month:
