Syconei
Syconei is a town in the southeast, known for its agricultural wealth. It is located at the base of the "Green Triangle," a geographical area defined by the three points of Syconei, Morendon, and Brisque. The region is a hub for vegetable farming and agricultural industry The town's close proximity with the Sedian border makes it a popular tourist and holiday town during peace times.
History
The Green Triangle (known as Zellen-Tri in elvish) has been a cultural hub for agriculture since the First Age. Being warm enough to get decent rainfall, close enough to rivers for the possibility of irrigation, and well protected from sea winds by mountains and bays, it is a cradle of fertile soil and good farming conditions.
Syconei is thought to have had a different name during the First Age, but it was built some time into the Second on the ruins of the town that stood there before. Ancient farm artifacts are often uncovered by ploughs to this day, and it is thought that Syconei was one of the most populous farming towns in Virias even during the First Age.
Rebuilt by a small group of wood elves, the town was more of an unlabelled village for many centuries. It went by the name of Tchzellen, meaning "green point" but this name was confusing to locals. Syconei was the name of the first tavern in town, named after the Innkeep's wife, Syconei. Eventually, the town became known by the name of the tavern, and this name began appearing on maps around 2100SA.
Food and Agriculture
Syconei is surrounded by vibrant agriculture, with extensive areas of land dedicated to growing a wide variety of crops. The weather in the Green Triangle is surprisingly mild; although it does experience winter snows, spring and summer are relatively warm and have fewer frosts than other valleys. Root vegetables are quite common, along with onions, leeks, and beans. Rye and barley serve as the primary grain crops, although much of Virias' grain is imported from other regions.
In addition to crops, most households in Syconei raise some form of poultry, with chickens and ducks being the most common. Sheep and goats graze in the hills, while the mountains are home to large populations of deer, pheasant, and wild boar, making hunting a popular pastime.
Population
The population of Syconei's township largely consists of brisimer or part-brisimer individuals. Similar to many manual labor sectors in Virias, a significant portion of the farming population in the surrounding areas comes from more varied backgrounds. Commonly represented are orcish, wood elf, human, and high elf ancestries, along with a mix of other ethnicities. The township itself is made up of many large manors, home to lords who own great parcels of land and oversee work on them rather distantly. The outskirts of town tend to be where the working farmers and farmhands tend to live, in smaller houses or cottages between parcels of farming land.
Other Industry
Syconei is known for its art, like many small towns in Virias. In particular, Syconei is known for its artistic grass and willow weaving crafts. Beading and embroidery are also common alongside knitting and crochet due to plentiful sheep and wool.
The Syconei (Inn)
The Syconei is one of two taverns in the town, though the Syconei is the oldest and is the only inn with accommodation. The town's namesake, the historically significant building has grown over the years and offers a bar, dining, short-stay stabling, common areas and paid accommodation.
A family business that has passed down multiple generations, it is currently managed and owned by the great-great-great granddaughter of its original owner.
Wealth
Syconei is known to be a highly wealthy town, with most land owned by lords who reside in manors in the township. The large density of wealthy figures has given the town a reputation of being "snobbish" or "hauty". There are various hunting, shooting and social clubs with a high level of exclusivity, and groups of nobles can often be seen hunting in the fields near the town.
