Community Highlights

Welcome!

To give some love back to the community, I started featuring things on the Root Directory homepage.
So, here is the complete archived list of items that have previously been featured.   Each reply includes the title, the date I began featuring the item, the item itself (Article block, world block, map, etc.), and the blurb I wrote for it. About every week or so, or whenever I remember to update this, I'll feature a new article I liked from the World Anvil community. <3
To start us off, here was the first-ever Community Highlight!

Hidden across Imaginarium are quotes from worlds of various Anvilites. Find them, open the portals leading to their stories, and watch your collection grow.

Imagica hid quotes from other words around her world for you to discover. Finding them will unlock the portal to its world, and add it to your collection. Such a cool idea!

I've been wanting to add a glowing mushroom species and a Blackreach (from Skyrim) inspired area to my world, so I had to give this one a read. Han always creates such interesting articles, and this is no exception! There's quite a lot of information about this mushroom, which I love! Also, there's a picture of stew that's pretty much in my favorite color, and I want it. Now.

A tattoo identifying dragon loyalists.

After recently getting my own little dragon tattoo, I was intrigued to read this article from SoulLink. It's got an interresting way to assure the legitimancy of the tattoo and the loyalist by including dragon bone dust and a secret ingredient in the ink. I also love how every dragon tattoo is unique and personalized.

Yonderhythm Song Contest

Yonderhythm Song Contest
Organization | Apr 24, 2026

The biggest and the best song competition the Yonderverse has to offer. A hundred planets battle it out to claim vocal superiority. (Almost) all profits go to charities.

I love the depth of worldbuilding Mochi created for the biggest song competition in the Yonderverse, including notable champions, rules that were added after a few years to make it more fair, various scandals after the founder's death, and even discrimination. It, for better or worse, really makes it feel more realistic. I also love how the founder's name is Symphia. <3

Deep Space Leviathan
Species | Nov 30, 2025

In deep space the gentle giants known as leviathans drift through the void. The first Great Migration of the late spacefaring age revealed that not only are the leviathans not extinct — they aren't alone.

Space whales! I love the detailed descriptions of these creatures created by Annie Stein; they are truly unique and fascinating! It’s also interesting that people would still attempt to hunt such a large creature for resources. But resources are resources, right? I wonder if the poachers have their own songs about it, maybe something like their own version of "The Wellerman".

Scalykind
Ethnicity | Jul 28, 2025

Sapient scaled folk inhabit the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Despite their cold-blooded nature, they can be found all over the world.

I enjoyed the detail Chris L created for this ethnicity and how the rest of society's view on them has mostly changed, though some are still stereotyped. Also 100% agree with what ECCBooks commented, "I love how very Florida this feels—the good parts of Florida, that is, not the bad."

... the fairy-elf warriors in the jungle of Téshàn.

Fellow winged Guardians! Although they're more like butterflies instead of dragons. But what an interesting unit this is, created by Blue Fairy 74. I'm glad to see someone create a well-written, detailed winged guard in their world; I'm definitely going to use this as inspiration to add more detail to the Dragonguard alary (air force).

The Emberhand is a short and sweet article written by Jaxon Lee Rose, in which I particularly enjoyed how it fostered a sense of community and the symbolism reflected in its name. It is a clean, well-written article that, although being an experimental role, demonstrates how even inconspicuous positions can carry great responsibility.

Unifier of Koraxis. Katyr Ainham is among the oldest and longest-reigning of the "kings" of Incaendium, having forged a unified Domain out of scattered settlements and tribes.

Wow, what an amazing article by Pandora 9. This is the level of detail I aspire to create for my characters; this is just stunning! But, I guess if you've lived as long as this guy has, you'd have a lot of history. This article had me captivated with its detail, all the way through to the end!

The realm - or entity - bound to the island of Inisfal

An intriguing realm by Demongrey that is also an entity in and of itself, swirling with the mood of the land. The inhabitants are just as unique; symbols of concepts — shifting combinations that form strange ideas. One inhabitant, not native to this eerie realm, persistently recurs, despite the realm's efforts to expel it. The Ear-Wyrm hums a maddening tune that nullifies nearby thoughts, stripping them of meaning and rendering them empty. I love the cameo that was added here. <3

"The Common language spoken in the Ice Age."

I know I've featured mushrooms here several times already; they're cool, ok? However, this article by Myth Cross is about the language that stemmed from ingesting said mushroom. The mushrooms contain the essence of a Word and grant the understanding of its meaning, which gave way to an early proto-human language during the Ice Age. It's a very interesting read.

Mindraisers
Species | Aug 2, 2025

Parasitic isopods feeding on a Sphere's thoughts, they are then able to give great power over the mind to even the least gifted individuals.

Isopod friend! Well, maybe not; they leech on the very essence of their host, the mind, as the name would suggest. They somehow "turn the abstract concept of mind and thoughts into sustenance." Yet, despite their parasitic nature, they also act as a type of symbiote, granting the ability to comprehend the cryptic images of a higher mind. A very interesting species by Rumengol!

Myth | Jul 17, 2025
The descriptions in this article by Razhea are amazing! It really paints the picture of what the tree and its fruit might look like. The berries themselves are an interesting concept, rapidly growing in size as they ripen and ultimately bursting. As drunkenpanda951 mentioned, I like how this myth is a more gruesome take on "the seeds will grow inside you if you eat them" myth I heard as a kid. Love the detailing!

The World Anvil community has created a wide variety of fascinating species. One standout is an intriguing plant-like creature by C. B. Ash, which is described in great detail! The article explains their form and appearance, their use of magic, and their feeding habits. I particularly enjoyed the section about Dryad naming traditions.

A beautifully written article by Imagica about a quaint hamlet found among the plains and a river. I love how laidback, chill, and cozy this town sounds. The writing and styling of the article really convey the atmosphere well; it makes you feel as though you're truly in the town, experiencing its sights, sounds, and smells (which is a stark contrast to my info-dumping, wiki-style writing, haha). It's a humble, ordinary place, barely on the map, where "greatness often grows where no one bothers to look."

This intriguing location by Tillerz has several things I like: crystalline landscape (with accompanying art to help visualize), and beees! I don't care if this isn't a place where people are allowed. I would like to pet a fist-sized bee and see such a stunning location with my own eyes. Though I guess you would have to watch out for the lightning that arcs between the crystal shards.

... a popular game on the Fire Continent - What would you hoard as a dragon?

I love how there's a board game in Blue Fairy 74's world, and of course, the name of it caught my eye. I love the history of this board game and that there are actual details about how the game works. My favorite part is when the egg is ready to hatch, the player says, "If I were a dragon, then..." and reveals their cards explaining the behavior or appearance of their dragon. This article is what inspired me to create my own dragon-themed card game in one of my worlds. <3

Hidalgo's Troupe
Organization | Jan 5, 2026
An interesting organization by Dimitris Romeo Havlidis of a floating performance company that is part circus, travelling theatre, and musical caravan. I love the origin backstory and history of this intriguing company; stealing an unfinished barge under the cover of ash and fog, held together by rope, tar, and hope. Over time, it was turned into a traveling performance stage with collapsible platforms, swinging stages, and pulley-driven rigs. It was never meant to become a legend; it was born out of desperation, at first performing simply to survive, but soon after had bigger plans.

Jengo's Fire Roasted Sausage Bites
November 25, 2025

Jengo’s Fire Roasted Sausage Bites
Generic article | May 4, 2026

Sweet, Tangy, Sticky & Smoky

I often have a hard time creating a story behind a recipe or food in worldbuilding, but SolomonJack has done this very well! I love the story behind how this dish was created: it was a desperate attempt to save cheap sausage from being simply wasted. Jengo's feeling towards the dish as an "inconvenience that refuses to die" gave me a good laugh. I also appreciated the perspective at the end about how some traditions don't originate from stories, but rather from a bad morning, a stubborn person, and a refusal to waste anything.
These sound great, by the way.

The masters of deception among Dragon Birds!

Oh my god, these little creatures created by Callyxtus are so adorable; I was not expecting them to be so small! I love the fact that the name means "deceitful lizard." There's also a great attention to detail for the description of these little guys, and they have an interesting way of hunting wasps. The art is also lovely! If I had wasp and mice problems, I would totally try to keep one of these as a pet.

Dragons
Species | Feb 7, 2026

Dragons are sentient, four-legged winged predators of immense size and power. Driven by a deep territorial instinct and a lost sense of purpose, they amass vast hoards and fiercely defend their domains from all intruders.

This is an amazing article about dragons within Hatwolf's world of After Silence. I love how detailed the article is; their culture, biology, origins, the several different languages they have, the explanation for why they have hoards, the fact that they internally have a kind of law and order, it's all amazing! Oh, and the art is great, too!
Much love from a fellow dragon enthusiast <3

A family of dragons, characterised by a long, wire-like tail.

I like dragons (who would've thought) and Mochi makes cool species articles. So, of course, when I saw this in my notifications, I jumped on it. It's a family of dragons characterized by a slender, whip-like tail (sounds like one of my dragons! :3). I love the image of a Mothwing dragon; it looks so cool! I also love how many genuses and species there are listed out, too. These sound like some interesting dragons! <3

gasp! A Mochi's Mocha in another world! It seems my trendy name has transcended the world of the Legends of the Dragonguard, as Herr_Wilhelm101 liked it so much that they asked me if they could add it to their world. I love seeing Anvilite references in worlds, and I'm happy that others like the name I picked for one. (It was actually my phone autocorrecting "Mochi" to "mocha" one time, which is where I got the name from, haha)   I never got around to creating a menu for mine, but this one does! It even includes food and some specialties, too. The owner, Mochi Featherquill, has such a cool name, I love it. I also love how unique this one is compared to mine, from its history to the collection of exotic birds that hang out in the cafe, and the design of the place. A lovely article <3

Known Space
In the 130th century of the Universal Modern Era (2900s CE), known space extends in a roughly spherical radius from Sol of about ten parsecs, or 32.6 lightyears; inhabited space only extends to roughly 7.6 parsecs (25 ly). It is important to note that RCC territory exceeds the boundaries of known space, but is not included here.
Please note that this map is currently incomplete!
This is an absolutely stunning map by Doug Marshall! The level of detail is unbelievable. It reminds me a bit of the galaxy map in Elite Dangerous; I love it! The Morons Guide to Alestia - By Prof. Solf S. Siggurd

I love how sassy Ellianette Von Clyve made this guide to their world, yet it still has a lot of information. The descriptions of the cities are beautifully written, sprinkled with insults and jabs at those in government, which had me laughing nonstop. I enjoyed the laid-back, casual tone of this guide for the world's setting; it's a fun and entertaining read!
