Astra Planeta has been nominated for four categories in the 2024 Worldbuilding Awards!

The final-round nominees for the Worldbuilding Awards have been announced! Among those nominations are no less than four articles from Astra Planeta:

Wondrous Nature Award: Earth
Strength & Honour Award: Ares Program
Pillars of Progress Award: Warp Drive
Best Article: Alone Together

I am incredibly humbled to be nominated alongside these other amazing worldbuilders and their stunning work in the first place. VOTING HAS ENDED! Thanks to everyone who voted; tune in to the awards ceremony on May 18th to find out whether any of these articles won!

Procyon

( ...⦾ ..• • ✹✦ ) •

Procyon is a binary star system that consists of a white F-type main-sequence star, named Procyon A, and a faint white dwarf companion called Procyon B. Procyon A is currently in the last stage of its main sequence, showing signs of expansion as the last of its hydrogen core is used up. Although Procyon A is beginning to die, the bodies in its orbit are in no immediate danger and as it such continues to serve its vitally important role as a trading hub and academic beacon of interstellar civilization. Procyon, like Sirius, is a key member of the Dogstar Alliance and hosts one of the two largest city-stations in known space: Remus, the twin of Romulus.

Astrography

Location

Procyon is located approximately 11.4 lightyears from Sol, a little over five lightyears from Sirius, and just barely over one lightyear from Luyten's Star. Its location makes it an excellent interstellar transit hub, as it has jump links to eleven systems: Luyten's Star, Ross 614, DX Cancri, Sirius, Chaos, YZ Canis Minoris, EI Cancri, Wolf 359, Wi, Muse, and Wolf 294.

Structure

The Procyon binary system, unlike Sirius, actually has a small contingent of planets: four orbit Procyon A, and one orbits Procyon B. It is theorized that the Procyon system once had more planets, but many were ejected as Procyon B's orbit shifted after its transition from a red giant to a white dwarf. The pair orbit about a common center with an orbital period of just over 40 years, with the distance between the two ranging from 21 AU to 8.9 AU.   SYSTEM OUTLINE

Ecology

Procyon has no life endemic to any worlds in the system, nor is there any evidence that life ever existed here natively. However, the Socratic moons Aristotle and Xenophon present environments where organic water-based life is possible. Consequently, these two moons are currently undergoing terraformation by humanity and support modest young terragenid biospheres.

Organization | Dec 5, 2023

The coalition of stellar nations in the Canis region of the sky.

The Procyon system is administrated by the Ecumenical Democracy of Procyon (EDP), headquartered in the citystation Remus. While the bulk of its three billion inhabitants live on Aristotle and Xenophon, most of the system's interstellar influence is held by the industry-focused habitats in the metal-rich asteroid belts around both stars. The EDP is one of the most prominent members of the Dogstar Alliance, alongside its twin sister polity the Ecumenical Democracy of Sirius.

Reality Check

The real Procyon system has no confirmed planets or planet candidates, and due to the nature of the system is unlikely to have any planets at all. However, the habitable zone of Procyon A is within stable orbital space, leading to the remote possibility of habitable worlds.
