Dogstar Alliance

Sirius and Procyon are nicknamed the "Dogstars" because of their places as the brightest stars in the constellations of Canis Major and Canis Minor, respectively. The Dogstar Alliance, therefore, is a political and cultural entity that unites the communities of Sirius, Procyon, and a few other nearby stars and rogue planets in a system of mutual benefit.
Sirius and Procyon, because of their debris clouds and high solar activity, are industrial and technological centers. They design and build ships, stations, arcology habitats, etc; and harvest antimatter from their respective suns. But in order to survive in star systems without local worlds, the people of these systems need food, water, air, and fuel. The Dogstars receive these resources from nearby planetary systems in exchange for technology.
The other members of the Alliance are Luyten's Star, which is very close to Procyon, and Kapteyn's Star, which is about equidistant from both of the Dogstars. The Alliance also has four shared territories that serve as pit stops for interstellar transit: the rogue gas giant Lucina, between Sirius and Procyon; the Ross 614 system, between Kapteyn and Procyon (host to one ice giant, named Cybele and two cold substars named Itzpapalotl and Erra. These locations provide the vast majority of fusion fuel to the Alliance, a critical economic contribution.
Also of note is Murray-Callahan, formally designated UIP-128: a highly unusual rogue planet with not only an atmosphere and thermally-active core, but endemic life as well. As the only known natural interstellar object to harbor life, Murray-Callahan is under strict protection by the USSC, but the closest neighboring systems (ergo, access points) are Sirius and Kapteyn, requiring the USSC to work through the Alliance.
