Stars and Druid! Oh my! - Astralis Entry

As many of you have been aware Blue Fairy 74 has been running an unofficial challenge over the month of April to create something related to the Stars.
I wanted to take a different stance on the challenge. Working with the Stars as a magical source and a place that needed protection. SO I created a circle of druids and rangers that protect the place and have links to starlight and the stars.
  Here is my entry:

A short story from a yet-unexplored land!

The Lord of the Bad Road
Prose | Apr 23, 2024

In this month's spirit of adventure (and short story-writing), I've released a story for subscribers to read!
However, I can't go 100% public with the story because I'm waiting to see whether it get accepted for a magazine submission. For the time being, I've made it available to subscribers only, **but** anyone can subscribe to my world for free. You should have the option to subscribe if you click through to the story, or you can find the subscribe button on my world's homepage.
This piece is certainly a change of pace from what I've been writing, but often, different settings warrant such a change of pace, don't they? I hope y'all enjoy it regardless! Happy building and happy writing!

Stormwatch Forecast: Marchitecture closing!

WOW 30 ENTRIES   That's honestly way more than I had ever expected! That's actually over double the amount from last year, and I could not be happier <3 Thank you so much to everyone who participated! If you, like me, LOVE BUILDINGS and architecture and good worldbuilding, please go take a scroll through all the entries! You can scroll the #Marchitecture hashtag, or view all Context and Architecture articles in one place right... here!

Pick (or create!) a context article within your world, and then write a building article that accompanies/responds to/resonates with that context. Create building articles that fit your world perfectly!

In personal news, I am in the thick of it for my own architecture right now -- the end of the semester is fast approaching and I am almost through the hardest semester in my entire Masters. Two-ish weeks to go!   In the brief moments of reprieve I've been doing some doodling for some God-husk redesigns, and also brainstorming and theorycrafting some future-Cathedris fun things like spaceships >:) I post about em over on my Discord Server, if you ever want to take a look!   Also the #WAWA2024 first round of voting is nearly complete, and omg there's so many fantastic entries to look at. If you haven't yet voted, that's okay, because there is a TON to go through! If you're still looking for some good entries, check out the shortlists and shared articles from people I've been seeing posted around these days -- they have a lot of great suggestions in there! And if you're STILL looking for some articles to consider, you can even take a look at my submissions if you like!   But anyways, I hope you had a fantastic March, and here's to an even better April <3   #Stormwatch #UnofficialChallenge

Who won Riddle Me This...?

Hello, dearest audience! I am sad to say that the month of March is over, but before I disappear we do have one matter to attend to.
Sidenote: Unfortunately a little late into the month of March I thought perhaps a month was not enough time to craft a puzzle. No matter, next March or sometime next year I will return and I might extend the challenge for a month.
Now, onto the winners. I had five wonderful contestants enter and all of them were unique and clever. I had quite a lot of fun with them.   But the third place goes to the ever coolest BASIC DRAGON with Find Alema! . A fantastically fun choose-your-own-adventure mystery!   Second place goes to the ever awesome TUNAI CUINSEAR with Room of Levers . It's a fascinating little problem, that I will soon implement into my house.   And last, but certainly not least first place goes to the ever sweetest MOCHIMANOBAN with A Worldwide Mystery . One of the most fun adventure hunts I've been on.   Congratulations to you three. And thank you to Solstice and Hugh Pierre for being willing to participate. I do apologize to anyone who wished to enter, but simply did not have the time.   I will see you, dearest audience, next year or some month soon. ( Jacqueline needs a small break from me. I tend to make her lose her sanity).   Hahahahhahahah.
This is Eivor sighing off...until the next Riddle

State of the Manifold - March 24 (Manifold Prompts Edition)

Howdy all,   Spring rains have finally come to bless my dusty little corner of the American west, and that means it’s time, once again, for the monthly State of the Manifold article. I’ve been busy this month, so let’s get into the updates straight away!   March saw the creation of the #UnofficialChallenge challenge, and, while I had hoped to participate in more of them, I did manage to complete two submissions as of the time of this posting. I took an unconventional approach to Stormbril’s #Marchitecture challenge and submitted an article about an orbital cycler; after all, in space, the difference between a stationary and a moving object is a matter of frame of reference, no? For Jester%’s #OccupationalMarch challenge, I broke with my usual tradition of BCGR-based or system-agnostic writing and posted an article about a custom D&D class I cooked up all the way back in the dim antediluvian epochs of 2014. This former article is definitely worth a look if you’re a tabletop roleplayer because it contains playable stats in not one, but two, different roleplaying systems. Come check them out:     Another thing I did over the course of March was make my submissions for your consideration in the World Anvil Worldbuilding Awards. I don’t have a compiled #WAWA2024 list as such, but these submissions are all up on the WA blog page for the contest. I encourage you to go and have a look at what everyone has submitted because there’s a lot of good stuff out there. And hey, if you see a few Manifold Sky or Sealed Kingdoms articles that strike your fancy, stop on by and consider dropping a like or a vote my way!

Vehicle | Apr 25, 2024
In other news, the annual #AdventureApril challenge is nearly here. I always enjoy Adventure April because, aside from eliciting some of what I consider to be my best work here, it means that WA suddenly blooms with scores of high-quality articles with interactive content, from basic TTRPG adventures to chose-your-own-adventure ‘mazes’ with varying levels of custom CSS. I’m already marinating a couple of ideas for a challenge article that may or may not be inspired by a recent revisit to Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, but we’ll see how that turns out. Here’s a couple of past submissions I’m particularly proud of:     Anyways, that’s all for now. I look forward to seeing what next month brings. Let me know what you think, and good luck on your creative endeavors as we enter the home stretch on all these writing challenges - both official and otherwise. Onwards!   Regards, BCGR_Wurth

First entries for #ChooseRomance2024 are in already!

Y'all are awesome!! I've been loving the conversations floating about, the brainstorming I've seen in passing, and I can't wait to see what's in store for all of us on the #romance front for this year's #ChooseRomance2024! Our first two entries have already been submitted and I'm so happy to see both of them arrive!

It can be really tough to get our work out there and to brace ourselves to share with anyone, whether friend or stranger. But to get your world out on the stage and to show up for it, in the many individual creative ways we can do that...it brings this wild inspirational force which encourages others to do the same...which brings even more creativity, energy, and inspiration to the collective worldbuilding mojo...which brings more articles, which...you get the point, right? Everyone pounding out brainstorming mindmaps and articles and stories this month to share with others: you are building something amazing! Let's keep that creativity engine running and create even more! :D

Okay, okay! Without further ado, I bring you:

First up for our Romance-Ception writers: A myth that proves that perception is not one-size-fits-all by orphidor:

For my own entertainment

#ChooseRomance2024, #UnofficialChallenge. Well it would seem that the challenges keep me going on lesser worked on parts of the world. If not items, then reworking articles and lore. Then we have this, focusing on a bit more tenderness than the looming war in The Great Tree. I couldn't help myself. I had bits and pieces of a few plot points, so I suppose this could be considered spoilery, if not with a lot of dusting off!   I have been working on this particular plot point for a very long time. This challenge just gave the reason to work on it with the attention it needed. Though it's part of the second book that has no released chapters (yet), I haven't really hidden it in the first one either. So sometimes all it takes is just taking those first steps forward, in love and war, enjoy the people in your life. You never quite know where things will end up!

Unofficial Challenges

I love the idea of letting folks make up their own challenges, so I'm taking part in a few. The first is #Marchitecture. This is my context, required for the challenge:
Whispers of the Flesh Trees
Spell | Mar 5, 2024
And this is the building I made:
Spelltesting Hall
Building / Landmark | Mar 5, 2024
The second I chose to take part in is #MagicMarch. For this one, I decided to revamp an ancient article I originally created using a different format back in 2018. Rewriting this one was really fun. If you want to take a look, here it is:
Twollig Regeneration
Spell | Mar 27, 2024
I'm also taking part in Adventures in Romance. (#ChooseRomance2024) Of course, I couldn't help but put a darker twist on the challenge. Here's what I wrote for this one:
Virandir's Wandering Eyes
Myth | Mar 19, 2024
To be honest, even though writing the articles and trying to follow the guidelines has been really fun, sharing my work has been difficult. I have extremely low self esteem when it comes to my creative stuff, whether that be my drawings or my writing. I want to get better about this, though, so I'm testing the limits of my comfort zone and putting my writing out there for the world to see.   I hope to participate in a few more unofficial challenges while they're still active. There are so many creative and fun-looking ones out there, I can't wait to get started on a few more!   #UnofficialChallenge

Two weeks left...

To improve your articles for my unofficial Spring Improvement Challenge:

Spring Improvement
Generic article | Apr 5, 2024

Dust off an old article and bring it up to your current standards. Show off how much you've improved over the months/years since joining World Anvil!

There are 7 excellent entries so far with lots of improvements made and I look forward to seeing more! These articles are from every skill level among WA users. You don't need to have a crazy formatted article with a hundred images and crazier CSS tricks to show how you improved your writing. Showing a better understanding of punctuation, containing your text better, using BBcode more effectively, etc. is as much of a meaningful improvement as figuring out the CSS to wrap words around an image.

Also don't forget, there are 9 unofficial challenges running right now across a wide range of subjects. If you want your work to be seen by more people, entering a few of them and leaving a global journal entry with links to your articles is an excellent way to do that!
As for me, I have not entered any yet, but I have ideas for most of them. Currently stuck on Dani's Adventure's in Romance challenge, because I suck at writing anything with dialogue and I am determined to get something written no matter how cringey it is! The other ones are going to be way easier once I finally get this one done, because they all actually related to each other in some way.

Dragon challenge!

Heard about my #UnofficialChallenge ? It has the very creative name "Unofficial Dragon Challenge 2024". You know, since it's the year of the dragon. XD;; You have until the 10th of May to write about a character that is somehow related to dragons. You can find an article about the challenge here: Unofficial Dragon Challenge 2024
I've done some sketches of one of my own dragons, Grim. From Grim's Curiosities. I haven't finished his personal character article yet but I will have done that before the 10th of May. :3 ...I will also be writing the article for another of my dragons, Merrin. ...and update the Dragon article. Hmm....I will hopefully have time to write about Dragon eggs as well. :3

What I'm Reading! Issue 175

Hey, Everybody! Here we go with Issue 175!

Well, looks like its March already! February always go by way too fast for me. How about for you? Still tackling your goals for your world, or worlds? How's the worldbuilding coming? Speaking of that, looks like we've got an Unofficial Challenge (#UnofficialChallenge) month here! I've seen three or four already. To see them, smash the #UnofficialChallenge tag. They'll show up.

I've already seen a couple that I might try. One lines up with what I'm trying to worldbuild lately, and the other? Well, it's something I've been wanting to do for a while anyway! Now is as good a time as any! Think you might try any? Which ones?

But, other than reading up on the Unofficial Challenges, I've also tried to catch up on my reading. So, without further delay!

Here is the current crop that REALLY stood out for me! Enjoy!

Magma Ducks
Species | Feb 15, 2024

Magma ducks are Mallards corrupted with dragon magic. They are immune to extreme temperatures and can be seen casting fire magic and swimming on Vreathe's lava lakes...

But now it's time to read and comment all the articles!

Unofficial Challenge: Spring Improvement

Spring Improvement
Generic article | Apr 5, 2024

Dust off an old article and bring it up to your current standards. Show off how much you've improved over the months/years since joining World Anvil!

I decided to do this for unofficial challenge month in March. Runs from tomorrow until the 31st of March. There is of course a badge for participating!
I wasn't going to make a challenge without making some sort of example article myself, so I spent some time updating an old article to my current standard. Here is the comparison: Galactic Council - Old vs. Galactic Council - New. Not perfect, but much better looking and much easier to read than before! (I hope to eventually update all articles in my neglected sci fi world to that standard!)

Last call for ducks!

It's almost the end of Duckuary! Are your ducks in a row? There's still a little time--just write something on World Anvil about or inspired by or mentioning ducks, go to Duckuary 2024, and add it to the list in the comments. And while you're there, enjoy the many great entries already submitted! Here's mine, a short story that turned out not as short as I thought it would be: Poor Little Thing. If deadline pressure is your muse, now is the time to get quackin'.

Stormwatch Forecast: Unofficial challenge month is coming!

Ah, 2024, wh-- wait what happened to January?! What do you mean we're almost done February?!?!?
Classic Stormbril, losing all track of time :D It's been a busy start to the year for me. Work on the Trinkets system for Cathedris, school ramping up to full speed, and travel plans for my Study Abroad semester coming this summer. It's been a lot to handle!
I've managed to get a few other small things done in there as well, at least. One thing I'm really happy with is getting all 21 prompts done for the Cabinet of Curiosities! I did it in lovely Cathedris Snippet style, where each prompt had a mini article under 50 words written. Check them out if you like!
But the big news I want to share is that I am taking part in #UnofficialChallenge month! I have just finished putting together the challenge page for this year's version of Marchitecture, an unofficial challenge that I ran last year that I was really happy with. This year there's a unique spin on it, and I am excited to see what people come up with! Please, take a look :D

Not Quite a February Wrap-Up

Hello, everyone. First I hope you had a great time with Cabinet of Curiosities! There's still a few more days before the competition wraps up. I might whip up a few more or expand on the stubs I submitted, but we'll see how life goes. (And if you're willing, I'd love to read your favorite article, so don't be afraid to share it!)   Second, thank you to Tillerz who kindly hosted the Duckuary 2024 Challenge . I had a blast doing it!   Third, I would like to announce I will be hosting my first an unofficial challenge next month! I have a few ideas myself, but if you have an idea I'd love to hear it! I'm very excited for it, and I hope you guys will be too. (Who knows maybe I might even do two??)   Besides a few additional articles to my worlds, I haven't been worldbuilding or writing very much, but I hope after these next few days I'll get some free time to get back into that.   Good luck with your Cabinet of Curiosities' articles. And best wishes to you in world building!   #Cabinetofcuriosities #duckuary2024 #unofficialchallenge #challenge

A New Unofficial Challenge for WorldEmber!

Helloooo everyone! I am so excited for this WorldEmber, not just for all the writing I want to do but for all of the writing the community is going to do. This year I am hosting my first ever unofficial challenge, obviously geared towards species. In this challenge, I would like to see people write at least one species. Preferably about one of the nine prompts in my article, but that's not mandatory. Just have fun and write cool things!   Animals are my life, conservation is something I strongly believe in and support, and I want to spread my love for animals and all things related. I love seeing the natural world in worldbuilding, it's always such a fun and diverse topic to explore.
If you want to participate in this challenge and make journal posts about it, use the #worldemberspecieschallenge hashtag! (it's a long one, sorry, I can't think of anything shorter that's specific enough.)   #worldember #worldember2023 #species #unofficialchallenge #mochievements

Three more days to submit your entry! An update on the Under the Sea Challenge.

In honor of #MerMay2023, and for an alternative event during Play May, Solaris is hosting a short "Under the Sea"-themed flash challenge. Are you writing something for the unofficial Under the Sea challenge?   You've got three more days until submissions close, check out the countdown to make sure you get it in in time.

A seashell badge representing the Unofficial Under the Sea Flash Challenge

Lets share some love to the entries thus far! Check them out, leave a like, and lets show eachother how amazing the World Anvil community can be!   We've gotten three deities, or deity-like figures. The very first entry was Jacqueline Yang's Tarvaar, god of darkness, fear and doubt. jandis introduced us to the impish Iofi, who's mood shifts as fast as the weather, and we've heard Chris L whisper about a celestial glutton deep, deep under the waves.   I was expecting to see some awesome species, and you have not let me down thus far! JudasBrennan goes in-depth about the society and mysteries of the lovecraftian Tsuthar'Chor, and KajetanWrites introduces us to the sea-variant of his shadow monsters and an insight into how they tie into the history of the elves. Makenzie Turney evokes scylla and other monstrous sea-serpents with the Monsters of Lake Nicodes, and last but not least Dutrius gives us the intelligent but (unfortunately for them) delicious Pentasepia.   What I didn't expect were condition articles, but they work so well. Maxwell Ferris got there first with Tarvana, an ominous condition contracted by repeated free diving, named after the mad ravings of the affected. Since then mirescosmo has followed with the Sea Hollowed a disturbing magical undeath, and Scalenex introduced the monstrous shark-like Karakhai Abberations.   We've also seen some incredibly underwater locations, the most popular kind of entry thus far. They're incredibly diverse. Rain slowly unveils what has become of the Crashed Sky Citadel in a fascinating mix of fantasy and science fiction, and Blue Fairy 74 shows us an inventive use of the map feature when she introduces the unique Qimiori biome, an aquatic forest, and the cornerstone of it known as the knot-tree. Tanai Cuinsear writes about a classic underwater merfolk settlement, Earvaryosto, and weaves a rich history. hughpierre gives us tables galore in Thalatta, an underwater school of merfolk that weave the waters around them into a orb.

    Judges

    Qurilion

Qurilion is a titan of World Anvil, he has won several Best Body Of Work during the WorldEmber events, and most recently the Strength and Honor Award during the Worldbuilding Awards. Not only is he the mastermind behind Araea, Shedim, Megacorpolis, and Necro-Industrial Complex, and many more amazing worlds, he is the person who inspired the Human of the Match award.
I love using challenges to explore some aspect of the world I hadn't really thought about. It can really help you break out of the mold and focus something that might be way outside your wheelhouse. Embrace it - you'll find something there that you like.
    — Qurilion's Challenge Advice

Challenges are a great way to get new people to check out your work. Remember that they don't know all the things you do: look for a way to show new readers with what your world is all about!
    — Annie's Challenge Advice

    Annie Stein

Annie Stein, also known as nnie, ran the first Unofficial Challenge back in 2021. She's the writer and artist behind Solaris, the world you are currently on, which was voted the Most Beautiful New World of 2022 and nominated for Best New World.
