The spiritual leaders of QUACKS, known as the Feathered Eyes, are revered for their ability to interpret the will of the Holy Duck through signs, dreams, and the subtle nuances of duck behavior. They are considered the guiding voices of the faith, offering insights, teachings, and occasional puns to help followers navigate their lives with wisdom and humor. The Feathered Eyes are identified by their elaborate, colourful hats and cloaks adorned with motifs of waddling ducks and rippling ponds.

The Feathered Eyes perform a variety of roles within QUACKS:

  • Interpreting Signs: They observe the behaviour of ducks (actual ducks, not duckfolk!) - both wild and domestic - believing their actions convey divine messages. A duck quacking at dawn might signal a new beginning, while a duck waddling in circles could suggest revisiting past decisions.
  • Leading Ceremonies: From the joyful "Day of the First Quack" to the solemn "Waddle of Remembrance," the Feathered Eyes preside over rituals with a mix of reverence and humour.
  • Spreading Teachings: They travel across the world, sharing the holy texts and encouraging others to embrace the light-hearted yet profound teachings of the Sacred Duck. They are quite successful in converting the kendric.
  • Counseling Followers: The Feathered Eyes provide advice and guidance, often using duck-based metaphors to inspire clarity and resilience.
There are nine Feathered Eyes in total, forming the spiritual council of QUACKS. Their number is considered sacred, representing the nine ripples of enlightenment that the Holy Duck created when it first graced the waters of the world. At least five of the Feathered Eyes are always stationed at the Church of Paddlewick, the spiritual heart of QUACKS, located in a picturesque oceanside village renowned for its ponds and lush greenery. These five focus on maintaining the church, leading local ceremonies, and providing guidance to pilgrims who flock there to seek wisdom or participate in holy waddles.

The Wandering Feathered Eyes

The remaining Feathered Eyes serve as wandering emissaries, spreading the teachings of the Sacred Duck far and wide. They venture across Alana, visiting distant cities, quiet hamlets, and everything in between. They are often referred to as the Wings of the Holy Duck, as they carry the faith to distant lands. Each of these wandering seers has a unique mission:
  • Spreading Teachings: They introduce the faith to new communities, perform blessings, and share the humour and wisdom of the sacred texts.
  • Strengthening Bonds: They visit existing QUACKS congregations to inspire followers, settle disputes, and unify practices.
  • Seeking Enlightenment: They explore the world for signs, relics, or even visions of the Holy Duck to deepen the understanding of their faith.
  • Charitable Acts: They often help communities in need, spreading not only spiritual guidance but also practical aid, such as food, clothing, or companionship.

A Rotating Role

The Feathered Eyes rotate their duties every five years, with travelling members returning to Paddlewick to renew their connection to the church while others take to the road. This cycle ensures that all nine seers remain deeply rooted in both the spiritual centre of their faith and the lives of their followers across the continent.

I cannot decide if I like the idea of them using puns as part of their practice better, or if my favorite part is the line "the nine ripples of enlightenment." Well done!

Your articles about the duck folk are always so entertaining. I really like them. This is such a unique species with their own quirks and style.
