Dragonguard Progress Report (DPR-4)

Issue 4 - With 20k words for NovelEmber down, it's time to get right into WorldEmber!
Follow the Legends of the Dragonguard for updates, challenges, and more!

Well, I've completed my NovelEmber goal of 20k words a few days ago — a 30 day writing streak at almost 21k words! I'll have to add what I've written in the manuscripts here on WA for rough draft readers or something, but you can read what I wrote for every day on my Substack.
But with November over now, it's time to go right into the next event: WorldEmber! I've got a backlog of stuff I need to create pages for.
And if you want to get notifications for only certain things within my world, I've set up a Notifications page!
Also, I've added content warning tags on the homepage, to denote the kinds of sensitive content is within the world. Any page that has such content is tagged and will display a spoiler at the top.
I've also created a page with more information about the Content Warnings on the site.

I Hit My Rebel Novelember Targets (Just!)

I wasn't sure I was going to manage it, due to illness and other home stresses, but I made my targets of 15 Episodes and 25,000 Words.
Here's my updated challenge page. Enjoy.

Here's my landing page for Novelember 2024, showing my progress towards 25,000 words of fantasy fiction or 15 Episodes.

I have no idea how people hit 50k words as 25k was hard enough for me!
I'll now be putting an editing and publication schedule together so I can gradually release these episodes.
Enjoy WorldEmber, I have rest to catch up on and other things outside of writing that need my attention.
  Thanks!

Two new updates! #NovelEmber and #WorldEmber!

Hello today all ye Anvilities and Cupids (testing ideas of what to call people who follow me), I hope everyone is doing well as we get to the end of the year! I got two updates coming down to y'all today!
Firstly, I finished Chapter 6 of Tacoma by Night: Magnum Opus bringing my NovelEmber word count to 22007! While this isn't even near the 50k goal, I'm proud of myself for getting as far as I did, and I plan on keeping this story going in the future! Check that one out following the link below!
Chapter 6: What do you do with some newbie mages? in Tacoma by Night: Magnum Opus
Secondly, my WorldEmber prep has been completed for week 4! Included in that final portion is a link to my Linktree where you can find my two active socials and my plans for the month to come! You can read that bit following the article block below as well!

And with that my WorldEmber prep is complete, LOCK IN BOYS

Oh boy oh boy it's that time of the year again. Only this time I'm doing the creative project equivalent of FNAF 20/20/20/20 Mode, Dark Souls 3 SL1, Halo 2 LaSO, perhaps even The Final Horizon Update pre-patch on Extreme difficulty, or just a regular playthrough of Sonic Unleashed.
In addition to that I'm also going to drop what I've written for #NovelEmber later today or maybe at like 3am or something idk man. It's gotta be some of my favorite short stories I've written so far BY far. But man this has been a crazy few months. I'm hanging on by a thread but that thread is like an inch thick. Wishing everyone else luck this #WorldEmber !!!

The future for ValentineDM (That's me! :D) - Reflecting

As #Novelember enters it's back half, I am looking and thinking that I'm most likely not going to hit the grand goal. That's fine and dandy, this was more about the motivation than actually hitting 50k, but it does make me think of and want to start anticipating my steps from here.
As we go into December with good ol' #Worldember, I'm going to still be focusing on Tacoma By Night, as I outlined in my homework article. After and interweaving that, however, I have a whole slew of projects that are on my mind.
Firstly, I have my primary fantasy setting, Edda, and at least two or three of the individual stories that make that up, the first of which I've already started to write.
Then, I have an urban fantasy/otherworld story in my own setting that I've done some work on, and an action adventure western themed world that's starting to take rapid formation in my mind.
My World of Darkness stuff is loads of fun, and I want to get more of it done, but it admittedly might take more of a back burner position come January, as while just about every character, place, and plot is of my creation, it is derivative work at the end of the day.
I do want to start thinking of monetization or opportunities like that, as I am confident enough in my writing (I mean I have a whole stinkin' degree for it too!) but I am left with a lot of uncertainty and anxiety about, essentially, meeting my deadlines.
But regardless, no matter how much is up in the air, folks can expect plenty more ValentineDM Content coming throughout the year. Prose, Articles, maybe even some art here and there! And I've even been contemplating videos on my settings if I can work out the technical stuff~!
I hope everyone else is having a great Novelember marathon so far, and that the future stretches on for us all!

#NovelEmber Progress and #WorldEmber Prep

I've been a bit quieter than usual this November, because I have been working on #NovelEmber, but as we're just over halfway through the month I thought I'd do a little update.

WorldEmber Prep

I've really been enjoying the WorldEmber prep. It's that strange thing where I find myself getting inspired but also trying to save up all of my ideas to start writing them in December. (It's one of the reasons I haven't written my latest entry for #TheLongestJourney yet). Really can't wait to start!

NovelEmber

I've written almost 30k words for my new book which is set in The Wilds (see World Block below). I know a lot of those words are going to change when it comes to re-reading and editing and so on, but it feels good to get the words out and to start connecting to these new characters I haven't met before!

Chapter 5 Finished, one step closer to the goal! (18331/50000)

As our intrepid mages get a chance to rest, answers come slowly but in great amounts, and all that's left to decide is where to go from here.
Chapter 5: One Foot In Front of the Other in Tacoma by Night: Magnum Opus
While I'm growing more worried I won't be able to make the 50k goal in time, I am having loads of fun getting this story out and writing about these characters!   Edit: Whoops! Almost forgot to tag #NovelEmber

NovelEmber is making me SERIOUSLY productive - Developmental Edit 1 finished!

This month I committed to finishing my Alpha-Reader draft of my novel for #NovelEmber. I wasn't expecting to do a giant analysis and developmental edit of the plot part way through the month, but dammit, that's what it needed! *sweats*
My word count hasn't grown for days, and since I still have about 30-40,000 words left before I hit my desired word count for this novel, I'm having to face the fact that I might not make the end of November deadline gave myself.
But HOLY HANDGRENADES, have I been productive! Having pulled my plot apart and analysed it, I understand the book and the characters so much better. And I've done so much work I might never have done otherwise. I'm really proud of myself for taking this scary step, even though it didn't really feel like progress while I was doing it!
So whatever happens, NovelEmber has already been a success for me in one way....
.... BUT CAN I WRITE 30,000 WORDS IN 19 DAYS?!
  We will find out! ;)
  *freaks out*

Special #NovelEmber twofer! (11176/50000)

The cards were right today, and so Tacoma by Night: Magnum Opus has two chapters done! I'm also ~22% through the challenge, and excited to see if I can keep this stride going!
In any case, our heroes in peril find themselves looking inward to awaken to something new, and then using that to try and bust themselves out from captivity. Shall they succeed? Can they trust their supposed ally? And where do they go next? Find out in these chapters of Tacoma by Night!

Second chapter of my #NovelEmber story is done!

It's almost funny how much of my By Night series is written at night! Our heroes find themselves in dire situations, and coming to know each other a little better, along with their mysterious co-captive. But, that doesn't stop the vampires from doing their strange work!
It should be actually fully published and public now, so give it a like if you enjoyed it, and if you have any comments I'd adore to hear 'em! Happy writing all!

My #NovelEmber goal is "Finish the Alpha Draft!" What's yours?

I've been hacking away at this Fantasy Murder Mystery for a few months, when I've had time. And now, it's NovelEmber! How the heck is it November already?!
There's a moment with IKEA furniture where you can see the thing taking shape, but it's DEFINTIELY NOT FURNITURE yet. My novel is in the same state. Some parts of look like A Genuine Book(tm) and others are just ideas, [XXXX here] and the dreaded yellow highlighter of "I didn't write this yet". This part of writing can be so frustrating, especially if, like me, you are impossibly impatient! But I think having a deadline to finish will be really helpful. It won't allow me to procrastinate the difficult stuff.
So NovelEmber is the push I need to screw in the final bits, add the panelling, and turn these odd pieces of wood, and scenes, and nails, and words, into a workable... well, book!
How about you? Are you doing a NovelEmber project this November? What are you hoping to achieve? <3

Dragonguard Progress Report (DPR-3)

Issue 3 - Now more mobile friendly! And also, other spooky updates.
Follow the Legends of the Dragonguard for updates, challenges, and more!

Spooky month came with a World Anvil challenge: Spooktober! This time around, my submissions were stories told by pirates.   But now it's time for a whole new event for World Anvil: NovelEmber! Let's write 50k words! (Or whatever your goal is)
November is also the prep month for WorldEmber, so I gotta make a prep page for that.   I have decided to share my writing progress on my Substack and add to it as the days go by.     I created a word goal tracker, if anyone wants to use it. I've also made a list of character traits and put them in a sortable, searchable table!

Also, I've been updating the site to make it more mobile friendly.
  • The sidebar menu is now hidden on mobile; you have to expand it with a trigger button. The TOC is still kind of in the sidebar, but there's a separate trigger button below the menu trigger that will expand the sidebar but only show the Table of Contents.
  • The navboxes at the bottom of pages are now displayed as a single column on mobile.
  • Event banner at the top changes to fit smaller screens.
  • Some specific pages got better mobile friendliness, too!
  • Rayhaven Dragonguard Academy instructor tables are now displayed as a single column.
  • The Characters page now has a tab for displaying the legend on mobile, kind of like another sidebar.

    End-of-October Update! +November Plans!

Hello everyone! I did a bunch of scrolling through community posts this month and it looks like people had fun with #Spooktober. It also looks like some people had a less-than-stellar month, so I'm hoping those of you who didn't have a great time will have a much better month coming up.
I had no concrete plans for October, I'd only sort of wanted to work on professions and organizations. Spooktober threw that off because my brother convinced me to write for it and of course that meant I would have to at least get the badge. So I wrote 14 articles. Here's the collection: Spooktober 2024 Collection. I also participated in Tyrdal's #unofficialchallenge Fires of Creation, which was super fun and was a great way to end the month right before I finished The CKGs today.
November plans! I'm going to participate in #NovelEmber, even if I've never done something like this before. My plan is to write a full novella as well as a specific article. I'm counting both of those for my goal. Here's the article with my plans: NovelEmber 2024.
I'm feeling pretty good about this month and I'm super excited for the upcoming month! I hope you all have a great week and I'll see you all soon!

    by FJ Brodie

As December can be hectic for me outside of my fiction writing, I have opted to do the Novelember instead of WorldEmber this year. I know there are no prizes, but I'm not on WorldEmber for the prizes. I joined to facilitate my writing.
My primary focus for #Novelember will be the story series The Cleansing. There are a few chapters up already, if you feel like taking on some new reading in bite-sized sections!
I hope to make the 50k words without stressing myself. But more importantly, I'll progress this story. And, who knows, I might introduce some other bits and pieces too.
Enjoy, and May the Elements Protect You.

    September ends & Spooktober starts

    September

Sweet, sweet vacation in the rocky Tatra mountains... I managed to get some rest and go on an adventure or two. It was my first time climbing the Świnica (2302 m a.s.l.) while passing by numerous crystal clear colourful lakes. Several days later, however, me and my partner decided to finish the trip strong and climb one of the Red Peaks. Never before had I the pleasure to be almost swept by the tumultous winds. Well I was, in the Lowlands, close home, but never high in the mountains with half a day to go, cold to the bone and having difficulty standing. It later turned out that after descending the first peak we had to climb another one to get down, which was a blast. The number of ideas I got for future stories... the adrenaline that will make for a wonderful tab in the memory... superb.

    Spooktober (& NovelEmber)

#Spooktober is here and as in the last year I plan on writing a handful of poems. In line with the theme I will prepare for #novelember with my spooky short story. The preparations began in spring, so I have a good deal of chunks to bounce from.

So here, from the coziness of my couch I wish you good luck with the upcoming stuff. Double to the students, to which the new semester just started.

I've got 13 ideas on how to be a REBEL in next month's challenge :eyes:

    NaNoWriMo is dead.
Thankfully, WA is hosting Novelember as a safe haven for folks who still want to take on the challenge! I just wrote about this on my blog post but I thought I'd share it here too.
But, if you don't like writing novels (honestly, same) - here are 13 ideas on how to complete the goal as a rebel:
  • Short stories instead of one big one
  • Non-fiction writing (such as a book, essays, or a research paper)
  • Just the planning bit for a novel
  • Editing and polishing up previous things you've written
  • Writing for a comic or graphic novel
  • Poetry, letters, or memoirs
  • Coding
  • Blogging
  • Script writing (for videos, TV, film, or theatre)
  • Course writing
  • Translation
  • Game design (planning, dialogue, TTRPG design, statblocks)
  • Worldbuilding (though you should save this for WorldEmber in December!!)

  •   Are you taking part in the challenge this year? If so, what are you writing?
