A short story from a yet-unexplored land!


  In this month's spirit of adventure (and short story-writing), I've released a story for subscribers to read!
  However, I can't go 100% public with the story because I'm waiting to see whether it get accepted for a magazine submission. For the time being, I've made it available to subscribers only, **but** anyone can subscribe to my world for free. When Höffdingen's troops attempted to establish a strategic base on the plateau, they unknowingly triggered the wrath of the Lamina, who in turn believed that their lands were under attack by Shajara. The Dark Device of the Great Chasm, Chapter 32 is Live!

Amates 31, 1277. Past the panels and below. We didn’t find trouble; it came looking for us.


 
The room spun three more times to the sound of rattling gears before a way out opened up. It wasn’t the spiral staircase. That stayed a spring-loaded, hungry meat grinder. Instead, the way out was a dark, dusty door hidden behind one of the medical cabinets. There was another spiral staircase behind it, only without the spring blades ready to snap out at us from all directions.

 
All told, it was a good sign they were on the right path. Ruins were often thick with locks and inventive ways to get killed. Those were always far less complicated than a room-sized combination lock. Still, it made my head throb.

 
But the floor below was well worth the headache.

 
I left the stairwell, took two steps into the new room, then froze. This room was round, similar to the one above, but lacked the engraved wall panels. Instead, there were wide, broken bay windows, some the size of a small carriage, that had a breathtaking view outside. Not that there was much to see. It was just giant, glowing blue mushrooms on the cavern ceiling and the massive underground lake with its dark water splashing in the distance, far below.

 
Everything else in the room? It looked like a carpenter’s shop thew up. The chaos was so much. I had a hard time taking it all in. So I focused on the view, and a set of tall, aged cabinets made of a dark wood that stood between the broken windows.

 
It wasn’t hard to imagine what the room looked like centuries ago. The place was fascinating. I flexed my hands, as I had an itch to sketch the room. Common sense tackled that urge and shoved it into a closet. We didn’t have time for that.

As I properly started it just after Christmas, I didn't think I would manage it, to be honest. I've needed to do these articles for ages, because they relate to my ongoing #Fantasy manuscript Skirmishes and Schisms.

    I've been working hard on reworking Project Aurora, we have a lot of outdated posts that need updating, and a new structure will help us out as well.     Hope everyone had a fantastic Christmas day! Mine was productive! Finished off the 10k!

    Well, I finished off the WorldEmber 10k with one of my favorites, the Worldbane himself: Mordred. WorldEmber was really productive for me. I really enjoyed finding the time to write more about my three favorite Teraltian characters: Castor, Korangar, and Mordred. I wrote a couple of interconnected articles, as well, just so I wouldn't have to make stubs that never got fleshed out in the end.

    Chapter 8 Out, and World-MaybeEmber!

    Now that I've finished most of the leftover stuff on my regular blog for this year, I can focus on some fantasy fiction writing and world building.

    World-MaybeEmber!

    I've finally done a long-overdue write-up of King Carnael II. After planning it, there's a lot to say, but I want to add more visuals before creating more text, otherwise it'll be an encyclopaedia entry.   I don't know if I'll make it to 10k words for #WorldEmber2023 - my two articles were ones I did because they needed doing, not because of specific prompts. Time and health have not been on my side this December. But I'll try.   If I don't get to chat with anyone beforehand, have a good #Christmas and here's to more writing and world-building in the new year.

    Evenacht and #WorldEmber2023

    Well, I thought I would have a few more articles done by this point. I have several written, they just need images (I may have underestimated how busy I would be getting the next installment of two serials up and running this month).   My first article is about the living sentient beings in the Evenacht, the umbrareign. There are nine subspecies, but they don't think of themselves in that light. Yep, I drew 9 pics for this one.

      ****   My second article is a short story for the prose category and tells (some of) Qira's backstory. Qira is a main character in my Evenacht serial, and he's not a huge fan of the Aristarsian culture he grew up in. His people were obsessed with trying to find a mortal avatar of their deity, Light, and he was one of the unlucky lads sent to train to become the embodiment of the divine. In the story, he's ready to take down the Light Temple and end the corruption found within, no matter the cost.

    Malkora's first critically successful WorldEmber!

    I can't believe I get to say it this year, but I've achieved my 10k goal — BEFORE the final day of the event! I'm so excited about the progress I've been making, and the content that I've already put together as part of this event!   Now, I'm not done yet — I have more plans, and plenty more ideas to put into writing — but I'd love to show off my proudest works thus far!

    Also very excited to dive into Malkora's very first pantheon! Even more excited about the new lore developments I've made in how pantheons are structured, and how major deities fit into regional pantheons — more info to come on deities and their shards soon! I'm excited about the two gods I've already started writing for (and check out how cool the tenets sections are for each)!
    • Atreimus, Strength Incarnate — The god sweeping Arsavela and the Eastwind Pantheon — the embodiment of humanity's strength. The Purifier title is now but one shard of Atreimus, out of a potential sea of others around the world.
    • Vosra, the New Dawn — Principal goddess of Malkora, first to arrive, and origin of most of Malkora's other deities. She is the embodiment of hope, and ensured humanity had the will to fight on at its lowest point.
    Phew. I hope that's not too much for one update, but I really am just so excited for all I've accomplished already this month. Gigantic thanks to the members of the community who have been cheering for me, hanging out in my writing streams, and generally pushing me to make great things.   Sip, sip, hooray!

    Chapter 8 of Skirmishes and Schisms out for Followers

    While things appear to be calming down after repelling the Kyadii incursion, emotions are beginning to run high elsewhere in the Realm. As the Kyadii seek to return home before the relative warmth of the Qalathian Winter permanently damages their eyesight, Rusziné gives his one remaining squad member a lesson in reason before the former Captain is forcibly ejected from the Realm.
      But something is stirring in Saf-Athan Palace, where Carnael prepares to break a law he himself set in motion.
    If you follow Qal'ath, you should be able to read Chapter 8 before I publish it publicly (if I've done it right)!

    WorldEmber Update: Week 1

    As the first week(-ish) of WorldEmber comes to a close, I decide to make a small update here on a the dashboard posts for people to see what I've been working on.   I'm wrapping up this week with a proper 4.7k words already finished around a third of the month in. a pretty good start in my opinion! While I expected workhours to kill some of my time, it has been pretty manageable so far and I can safely say I might be able to wrap this up without much concern.   Lets hope that for the rest of the month I'll be able to keep up this momentum!

    11/3/23 Evenacht Snake's Den Chapter 43: Decisions is Live!

    Read Chapter 43 here.
      The mini-Joyful has decisions to make about their next move, and who will continue to accompany Vantra on the quest to Redeem Laken.

      FYI: This is the penultimate chapter for Snake's Den. The final chapter (epilogue) will run Nov 17, then I will have a month's break to recharge. Greenglimmer will begin Dec 15, with Vantra and company embarking on the quest to find Laken's second essence. The publishing schedule will remain the same: every other Friday by 2:00 PM.
      Check for updates at the book site here at World Anvil. And I should have the Greenglimmer map done before the book begins (and hopefully a revamp of the site). *fingers crossed*

      I'm sad Snake's Den is coming to a close. Publishing this story as a serial, it veered off into unknown directions. I'm excited to see what Greenglimmer brings, though! And, because my scheduling is what it is, Knavish Canto has two more chapters before it, too, ends, and I take a month break before Broken Dulcet starts on Dec 22. It's weird to have the serials on nearly the same schedule.

      My time has been taken up with prepping for the end of the current serial books and the beginning of the new ones, and looking into the right site to use for POD stuff. But I will be doing WorldEmber prep!
