About Dragons

Dragons are an ancient species of lizards that emerged during the era of Cataclysm. Their ancestors were Primordial dragons, said to be the direct offspring of the god of Chaos, son of Vorion. According to legend, this is why dragons are so destructive and dangerous, spreading seeds of chaos, pain, and fear wherever they go. However, dragons are highly intelligent creatures, fearing almost nothing because they are fully aware of their capabilities. It is also extremely difficult to surprise or catch them off guard due to their genetic traits and exceptional environmental perception. If this species were ever to unite, there would be no stronger race on Thalasa. However, their wild, bestial, and territorial nature prevents this from happening. There are, however, places in the world where dragons are trained from a young age, and it has been proven that it is possible to control them and even ride them.

The Primordial Dragons
It is said that the first dragons on Thalas were the primordial dragons — the direct descendants of Chaos itself. According to legends, they were sent to Thalas with the purpose of destroying it. However, they failed in their mission, but despite their failure, they left a scar on history in the form of the Kataklizma. The first dragons, according to myths, were legendary creatures imbued with an enormous amount of Archana. Their size and majesty are indescribable and incomprehensible to the average mortal. Fortunately, this immense power was not inherited by their descendants. The names of the primordial dragons are known to anyone who takes even a passing interest in these wild and powerful creatures.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Their bodies are covered with tough skin, scales, and segmented protrusions that resemble bone in structure and hardness. Their powerful and muscular hind legs are adapted for short sprints, necessary for takeoff. Some species of dragons living in coastal regions also use these strong hind limbs for swimming. With their powerful strokes, they can cover distances of several kilometers in the water. The forelimbs form a pair of broad, membranous wings. At the joint of these wings, there is usually a thick claw, which these creatures use to grip onto rocks or other objects. This part of the wing plays a crucial role in crawling. When moving on land, dragons use their hind legs and the wing joints for support. Their long, elongated bodies, often with extended necks, are perfectly adapted for flying long distances. Sharp claws and teeth make them dominant predators on Thalas. Bodies are completed by a long, muscular tail, which, like the hind limbs, plays a significant role in swimming. Additionally, it functions as a rudder during flight, aiding dragons in maneuvering. In battles and hunting, the tail can be used as a lethal weapon, capable of stunning or even killing an opponent. The larynx and oral cavity of dragons are highly resistant to extreme temperatures and are adapted to their ability to breathe deadly fire, which is one of their primary weapons.

Genetics and Reproduction

Mating occurs naturally, with the male required to fertilize the female. The dragon mating cycle occurs approximately once every hundred years, continuing until they reach about five centuries of age. First cycle can appear after dragon is at least fifty years old. Each cycle lasts up to half a year, and if a female dragon successfully mates, she can lay up to five eggs in a single clutch.
This means that over her lifetime, a dragoness can lay as many as twenty-five eggs. On average, three of these eggs successfully hatch from each clutch.
Young dragons are born highly resilient and strong, requiring their mother's care for only about three to five months after hatching. After this period, they become independent and capable of hunting for food on their own.

Growth Rate & Stages

(0 - 5) - Hatchling:
Newly hatched dragons are resilient and strong. They rely on their mother for guidance and protection during their early months, typically three to five, before becoming independent.
(5 - 50) - Young Dragon:
As they grow, young dragons develop their hunting skills, physical strength, and early mastery of their abilities, such as flying or elemental breath, depending on the species. This stage is marked by rapid growth and experimentation.
(50 - 500) - Adult Dragon:
Fully grown and mature, adult dragons are at the peak of their power. They have perfected their hunting techniques, territorial instincts, and combat skills, making them formidable predators and rulers of their domain.
(500 - 750) - Elder Dragon:
As dragons age further, they transition into the elder stage. These ancient beings possess unmatched wisdom, vast memories of their environment, and exceptional mastery of their abilities. Elder dragons are often revered or feared due to their immense power and experience.

Ecology and Habitats

Forest Dragons

A Forest Dragon is a majestic and elusive creature, perfectly adapted to life in dense, wooded environments such as ancient forests, jungles, and wetlands. These dragons are known for their stealth, agility, and intelligence, making them one of the most formidable hunters of the forest realm. Their ability to blend seamlessly with their environment and their instinctive connection with nature make them highly revered and feared by those who encounter them.
  Character:
Forest Dragons are known for their curious, elusive, and intelligent nature. They are naturally solitary creatures, preferring to remain hidden in the shadowed depths of the forest rather than confront intruders. These dragons are not inherently aggressive but can be fiercely protective of their territory. Their keen senses and heightened awareness of their surroundings make them difficult to surprise, and they have an uncanny ability to anticipate danger or potential threats. They have a deep connection with nature, able to read the environment around them. These dragons are extremely territorial and will fiercely defend their hunting grounds, nests, and any younglings under their care. However, they tend to avoid conflict with creatures they deem weaker, preferring to observe or quietly relocate to a safer distance.   Hunting:
Forest Dragons are skilled hunters that rely on their speed, agility, and stealth to capture prey. Their primary diet consists of small to medium-sized creatures, such as deer, wild boar, birds, and various forest animals. They are expert ambushers, often using their ability to blend into the forest’s dense undergrowth to sneak up on their prey. Their eyes and hearing are exceptional, enabling them to spot movement and hear even the faintest rustling of leaves from great distances. Forest Dragons often hunt alone but are capable of hunting in pairs or small groups during rare moments of cooperation. Their hunting technique generally involves stealthy movement, using their sharp claws and teeth to overpower prey once within striking distance.   Lifestyle:
The Forest Dragon’s lifestyle is intricately tied to the natural world around it. These dragons are solitary, spending most of their time in seclusion in deep forests or jungles. Their lairs are often found in hollow trees, hidden caves, or secluded groves, well-concealed from other creatures. They build their nests with the materials found around them, such as leaves, twigs, sticks, and moss, ensuring that their lairs blend in seamlessly with the forest environment. These dragons are also known for their strong territorial instincts, marking their boundaries with physical signs and by using their scent. They only meet with other dragons during mating season, where pair bonding can occur, but otherwise, they keep to themselves. Though they are not social creatures, the presence of a Forest Dragon in any given area is often a sign of the health of the forest, as they are deeply tied to the well-being of the environment around them.

Mountain Dragons

The Mountain Dragon is one of the most imposing and legendary creatures in the dragon world. These mighty dragons are typically found in towering, craggy mountain ranges, often dwelling at high altitudes where few other creatures can survive. They are the undisputed rulers of the mountain peaks, often living among the clouds or in the deep caverns of rocky cliffs. Known for their immense size, strength, and ancient wisdom, Mountain Dragons are as much a part of the mountain landscape as the rocks and trees themselves.
Character:
Mountain Dragons are known for their stoic, wise, and unyielding nature. Unlike the more temperamental Forest Dragons, Mountain Dragons are more calm, with a deep sense of ancient knowledge passed down through generations. These dragons are not easily provoked and prefer to maintain their solitude in the remote regions they call home. However, when threatened or disturbed, they can unleash a terrifying fury. They are considered to be among the oldest and most intelligent of dragons, with vast knowledge of the world’s history and magic. Some legends say that Mountain Dragons are capable of communicating telepathically or through ancient languages known only to their kind. Their ability to sense the flow of magical energies and natural forces in the mountains makes them unrivaled in navigating these harsh terrains.   Hunting:
The Mountain Dragon’s hunting style is a mix of strategy and raw power. While their large size and strength make them excellent in direct combat, they are also patient and will often wait for the perfect opportunity to strike. They typically hunt large prey, such as mountain goats, wild boar, and even larger mammals like elk or bison, all of which can be found at higher altitudes. These dragons use their keen eyesight to spot their prey from high above, often swooping down to snatch it with their claws or breathe fire to disorient and trap it. In some cases, Mountain Dragons will wait for prey to come near their lair before attacking, using the landscape and their ability to blend into the mountainside to ambush unwary creatures. They are also known to hoard treasure, often accumulating gems, gold. They simply like shiny things.   Lifestyle:
The Mountain Dragon's lifestyle revolves around its territory and the harsh, often unforgiving environment in which it lives. These dragons are territorial and will fiercely defend their mountain domains from intruders, be they other dragons or lesser creatures. Their lairs are typically located in high caves, craggy cliffs, or volcanic craters, places that are difficult to access and often hidden from view. Mountain Dragons are solitary creatures for most of the year, coming together only during mating seasons. Their nests are constructed from stone, crystals, and lava-hardened materials, often lined with soft bedding made of fur or plant fibers. While they may venture out to hunt, they typically return to their caves, which are often filled with vast hoards of treasure. These dragons are deeply connected to the mountain ranges they inhabit. Some say that Mountain Dragons can influence the very terrain itself, causing avalanches, rock slides, or eruptions when angered. They are guardians of the mountain ecosystems and maintain a delicate balance between the forces of nature and the creatures that live within it.

Volcanic Dragons

The Volcanic Dragon is one of the most fearsome and powerful dragon species in existence. These colossal creatures are closely tied to the destructive power of fire and magma, often dwelling in the heart of active volcanoes or in regions prone to seismic activity. Their very presence is a testament to the raw, chaotic forces of nature, and they are known for their terrifying ability to manipulate fire, molten rock, and lava. Volcanic Dragons are revered and feared, not just for their size and power, but also for their association with cataclysmic events that reshape the land itself.
Character:
Volcanic Dragons are wild, unstable, and destructive by nature. Their temperament reflects the fiery chaos of the environments they inhabit, and they are known to be highly territorial and fiercely protective of their volcanic domains. They possess a volatile nature, with moods that can shift as quickly as a volcanic eruption, going from calm to enraged in an instant. These dragons are often seen as the embodiment of nature's wrath and are both revered and feared by those who live near volcanic regions. While they are not inherently malicious, Volcanic Dragons are primal creatures with a deep connection to the elemental forces of fire and magma. They can be highly aggressive when their territory is threatened, and their fiery breath and molten powers make them deadly foes. Despite their fierce disposition, they are also seen as ancient, wise beings who carry the knowledge of the earth's deepest and most dangerous forces.

Hunting:
Volcanic Dragons are predators of immense power and usually hunt large, hardy creatures capable of surviving in extreme conditions. Their primary prey includes mountainous beasts, giant lizards, and occasionally, unfortunate adventurers who attempt to explore their volcanic lairs. Their hunting method is as brutal and intense as the environments they inhabit. They rely on their ability to breathe fire and release molten lava to trap and burn their prey. With their immense wingspans, they can scorch entire areas from above, making it difficult for their prey to escape. Volcanic Dragons can also manipulate the landscape around them, causing lava flows or volcanic eruptions to flush out prey from hiding places. Their ability to breathe fire and summon lava makes them exceptionally dangerous predators, capable of overwhelming even the largest prey with sheer destructive force.

Lifestyle:
The Volcanic Dragon’s lifestyle revolves around the extreme conditions of the volcanoes they call home. These dragons thrive in the intense heat and magma-filled environments of active volcanoes, using the molten rock and volcanic gases to their advantage. Their lairs are often located within the crater of a volcano, lava caves, or fiery chasms where few others dare to venture. These dragons are primarily solitary, as they fiercely guard their volcanic domains. While they may occasionally meet for mating, they tend to live alone or in small family groups, often creating nests in the highest, most unreachable places in the volcanoes. Their nests are made of hardened magma, stone, and charred remains, and their lairs are often filled with precious metals, gemstones that have been forged by the volcanic heat. In terms of territorial behavior, Volcanic Dragons are known to cause volcanic eruptions and lava flows as a means of defending their domains. Their very presence is enough to influence the volcanic activity around them, and when angered, they can cause catastrophic events, such as the eruption of dormant volcanoes or the destruction of nearby villages. Volcanic Dragons also have a deep connection to the earth's elemental forces, and they often tap into the magma and fire beneath the surface to enhance their power.

Desert Dragons

The Desert Dragon is a creature of extremes, a majestic and fearsome species that thrives in the harsh, sun-scorched expanse of arid deserts. These dragons have evolved to survive in one of the most unforgiving environments on the planet, where water is scarce, temperatures soar to extreme highs during the day, and the nights are bitterly cold. Adapted to the desert's conditions, Desert Dragons are resilient, patient, and masterful predators that utilize the landscape to their advantage.
Character:
Desert Dragons are stoic, patient, and resilient creatures, perfectly attuned to the harsh conditions of their environment. They are solitary by nature and rarely seek interaction with others. Their temperament is calm, yet they possess a deep well of ferocity and strength when threatened or angered. Desert Dragons are known to be highly territorial, fiercely guarding their domain, which can span vast stretches of desert. These dragons have an unwavering endurance, able to survive long periods without food or water. They are not impulsive or hasty but prefer to observe and wait for the right moment to act. Their ability to withstand extreme conditions and their calculated behavior make them formidable opponents, as they can outlast most creatures that venture into their domain.

Hunting:
Desert Dragons are patient hunters, relying on their ability to sense shifts in the desert environment to track down prey. Their primary diet consists of large desert mammals, reptiles, and smaller, more elusive creatures like jackals, antelopes, and lizards that have adapted to the desert heat. They are also capable of hunting nomads, travelers, or caravans, particularly those who wander too far into the dragon's territory. These dragons primarily hunt by ambush. They can remain perfectly still for hours, blending into the desert environment, before striking with lightning speed when prey comes within range. Their long, powerful claws and teeth allow them to easily overpower most creatures, while their fiery breath can be used to flush out hidden or evasive prey. They are also known to use sandstorms to their advantage, often creating a temporary storm of their own to disorient and trap their prey.

Lifestyle:
Desert Dragons lead solitary, nomadic lifestyles, rarely settling in one place for too long unless they find a suitable oasis or hidden cave. Their lairs are typically found in deep caves, underneath rocky outcroppings, or hidden beneath sand dunes. These caves are naturally insulated from the desert's extreme temperatures, offering a cool retreat from the blazing sun during the day and shelter from the cold nights. They are excellent at camouflaging themselves in the sand and rocky terrain, making them difficult to detect. Their bodies are often a dull, sandy color, blending seamlessly with the desert landscape, and they can burrow into the sand or hide within rocky crevices to avoid detection. Desert Dragons have evolved to survive with minimal resources. They are capable of storing water in specialized sacs in their bodies and can go without sustenance for long periods. Their diet consists primarily of large prey, but they will also scavenge when food is scarce. Their territorial nature means they will guard their hunting grounds fiercely, often using destructive sandstorms or fire-breathing attacks to drive off intruders or competitors. Despite the harsh environment, Desert Dragons have a rich cultural connection to the desert. Some desert-dwelling tribes revere them as protectors of the desert, seeing them as ancient, god-like beings that control the sands and the sun. These dragons are often seen as guardians of hidden oases or ancient desert ruins, and their lore is intertwined with the myths of the region.

Coastal Dragon

The Coastal Dragon is a majestic and powerful creature that thrives in the dynamic and ever-changing environment where the land meets the sea. These dragons have evolved to live in coastal areas, where they are surrounded by the vast ocean, sandy shores, and rocky cliffs. Coastal Dragons are highly versatile, able to seamlessly move between land and sea, and are often seen as a symbol of the harmony between the earth and the water. Known for their grace and power, they are revered as guardians of the coastal ecosystems, controlling both the land and the waters they call home.

Character:
Coastal Dragons are known for their balanced and calm nature, reflecting the harmony between the elements of air, fire, land, and sea. Unlike more temperamental dragon species, Coastal Dragons are patient, wise, and often have a serene demeanor. They are deeply connected to their environment, with an innate understanding of the rhythms of the sea and the tides. While they are generally peaceful creatures, they are also highly territorial and will fiercely defend their coastal domains from intruders. Their temperament can shift when their territory or young are threatened, becoming defensive and aggressive if necessary. They are often seen as protectors of the coastlines, guarding against dangerous predators or natural disasters such as storms or floods. Coastal Dragons are highly intelligent, often displaying an understanding of natural patterns, including the movement of ocean currents, weather systems, and even the behavior of the animals in their domain. Their sense of sight and smell are exceptional, helping them detect changes in the environment that could signal an approaching storm or an underwater threat.

Hunting:
Coastal Dragons are opportunistic predators, hunting both on land and in the water. They prey on a variety of creatures, including seafaring mammals like seals and sea lions, fish, and even larger ocean creatures such as giant squid or leviathans. They also hunt terrestrial animals that live along the coastline, such as wild goats, deer, and birds. When hunting on land, Coastal Dragons are swift and stealthy, using their camouflage to blend into the rocky cliffs or coastal vegetation. On land, they rely on their sharp claws and teeth to catch prey, often swooping down from their cliffs or caves with incredible speed. They may also use their fire breath to flush out prey or disorient animals hiding in the rocks or sand. When hunting in the sea, Coastal Dragons are even more formidable. They can dive to great depths and are capable of swimming at impressive speeds. They often ambush their prey in the water, using their sharp teeth and powerful jaws to capture and subdue fish or larger creatures. Their ability to breathe underwater, combined with their acute senses, makes them incredibly effective predators in their aquatic environment.

Lifestyle:
Coastal Dragons lead a nomadic yet territorial lifestyle, often migrating between different coastal regions depending on the season and availability of food. They typically reside in rocky caves, cliffside lairs, or hidden grottos near the shore, where they can easily access both the sea and the land. These lairs are often surrounded by rocky outcroppings or sheltered coves that provide both protection and privacy. Underwater caves are not the exception for them to live in. During certain times of the year, Coastal Dragons may gather in small families or clans, particularly for mating or during periods of resource abundance. They are most social from dragon races and they are capable of cooperating with other dragons, such as when facing large predators or storms. Coastal Dragons are also highly adaptive creatures, able to thrive in both temperate and tropical coastal regions. Their connection to the sea is profound, and many coastal cultures view them as protectors of the ocean, believing that the dragons’ presence ensures the prosperity of fishing or the safety of sailors. Coastal Dragons are often revered in local myths and legends, with stories of them calming storms or guiding ships through treacherous waters. Despite their affinity for water, Coastal Dragons are excellent flyers and are just as comfortable soaring over the coastline as they are swimming through the ocean. They often use their aerial prowess to survey their domain, keeping an eye out for intruders or changes in the weather. In some regions, Coastal Dragons are known to create mysterious tidal waves or whirlpools as a means of defending their territory or chasing off rivals.

Arctic Dragons

The Arctic Dragon is a magnificent and formidable creature that has adapted to the extreme cold and harsh conditions of the polar regions. These dragons are native to the icy, snow-covered landscapes of the far north, where blizzards rage and the sun barely rises above the horizon for months at a time. They have evolved to not only survive but thrive in the most unforgiving environment on the planet. With their thick scales and powerful bodies, Arctic Dragons are perfectly suited to the frigid climates they inhabit.

Character:
Arctic Dragons are stoic, reserved, and patient creatures, deeply attuned to the cold and harsh landscapes of the polar regions. Their temperament is often calm, but they can be fiercely protective and aggressive when their territory or young are threatened. These dragons are incredibly intelligent, with a sharp sense of awareness and instinct that allows them to navigate through the frozen wilderness with ease. Arctic Dragons are known for their resilience and adaptability, capable of withstanding extreme cold temperatures and the isolation that comes with living in the far north. While they are solitary creatures, they can form close bonds with their offspring, especially in the harsh environments where cooperation can sometimes be essential for survival. Due to their remote habitat, Arctic Dragons are often seen as mystical or god-like by the indigenous people of the far north, believed to have control over the ice, snow, and storms. They are revered for their power and feared for their devastating abilities.

Hunting:
Arctic Dragons are efficient and patient hunters, relying on their ability to detect movement beneath the snow and ice. Their diet primarily consists of large arctic mammals, such as musk oxen, mamooths, reindeer, and walruses, as well as sea creatures like seals and fish. They are also known to hunt smaller creatures like snow hares or snow foxes, which are more elusive and harder to find. When hunting, Arctic Dragons use their stealth and surprise to their advantage. They often remain hidden beneath snowbanks or ice sheets, blending in with their environment, before emerging to capture prey with their powerful claws and sharp teeth. In the winter months, Arctic Dragons are adept at hunting in the dark, using their enhanced senses of darkvission and smell to track down prey. Their ability to see in low-light conditions gives them an edge when navigating the polar night, allowing them to hunt at any time of the day or night. They have an exceptional ability to sense temperature changes, making it easy for them to locate animals that are seeking warmth beneath the snow or hiding in caves.

Lifestyle:
Arctic Dragons live in isolated, remote regions, usually in glacial caves, ice caves, or deep crevices in the mountains. These caves are insulated from the extreme cold, providing warmth and shelter during the brutal winter storms. These dragons are solitary by nature, rarely interacting with others of their kind except during the mating season or when protecting their territory. Their territory can span vast distances, often covering large swaths of frozen tundra, mountain ranges, or polar ice caps. Arctic Dragons are highly territorial, and they will fiercely defend their home from any threats, including other dragons or intruding creatures. They are capable of causing powerful snowstorms or blizzards to drive away unwanted guests or rivals. Arctic Dragons are highly adapted to the cold, with thick scales and a layer of fat that helps insulate their bodies. Their scales shimmer like ice, often reflecting the cold light of the polar regions, allowing them to blend in with the snowy terrain. Though generally solitary, Arctic Dragons are fiercely protective of their young. They lay their eggs in snowbanks or frozen caves, where the cold helps to preserve the eggs until they hatch. These dragons can go without food for long periods during the harsh winters, relying on their stored fat reserves to survive. When food is scarce, they can hibernate or slow their metabolic rate, surviving on minimal energy until the spring thaw brings new opportunities for hunting.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

In the animal kingdom, there are few creatures with higher intelligence than dragons. Dragons are considered among the most intelligent beings on this planet. They are capable of logical reasoning and evaluating situations. They can also predict the outcomes of their actions and anticipate the movements of their enemies.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Dragon hearing is not the dominant feature of their sensory abilities. Due to their massive bodies, dragons generally have relatively small auditory organs. The general rule is: "The smaller the dragon, the better the hearing." This is particularly true for non-flying species and subspecies. On the other hand, dragons possess exceptional vision and can spot prey from several kilometers away. It is said that under favorable conditions, a dragon can see the dust trail of a galloping horse from the top of a mountain, allowing it to dive toward its target with precision. Dragon olfaction, however, has no equal in the world. A dragon can detect a familiar scent from as far as hundreds of kilometers away and navigate effortlessly using its sense of smell. Another standout trait is their navigational skills and environmental memory. It is said that a dragon's memory neither fades nor diminishes with age, and that dragons remember everything they see throughout their lives.
