Golichistan

The Republic of Golichistan is a minor democratic republic located within the Federal Province of Mediolama. It extends control over four geographic regions, the Uludere Plateau, the Marshlands, the Voolani Wetlands, and the Vashan Heights. The republic stretches into the Pinascimate Mountains, but most of its industry and population lies to the south. It achieved its independence in 62 PC (2297), electing Aqliya Mahamet as its first Prime Minister.

Politics

Golichistan is a Parliamentary Democracy, with fair and equal voting rights. It is seen as a blend of Cinuan and Tersten politics, with an emphasis on debate, rationality, and civic duty. Political participation is heavily encouraged, with many communities forming blocs and debate groups. It has warm ties with the Republic of Tersten and the Cinuan Union, and also maintains friendly relations with its southern neighbour, the Arimidas Republic. Its eastern neighbor, the Saralost Confederation, is on lukewarm terms with Golichistan. The Confederation's capital, the city of Saralost, is located just over 170km from the Golichistan border, and concerns have been raised about this, should any hostilities ever break out.

Economy

Most of Golichistan's economy is focused around trade, with the Takiwerk River flowing through the land, and connections to most of Tersten via waterways and land routes. Its high altitude regions have allowed for the cultivation of unique Golichi Wine, which is said to have medicinal properties. Similarly, like many places on Tersten, it has a sizeable tourist industry, as many Cinuans travel to Golichistan for holidays.

History and Culture

The Golich People arrived in the region as settlers from Cinu's Golich region following the abolishment of the Penal System, becoming part of the Pinascimate Republic as settlers on its frontiers. During the reign of the People's Republic of Lordania, the region of Golichistan was under heavy control by the state, but the Golich People showed great resolve, with many becoming part of cells of the Tersten Resistance. When the Republic of Tersten was founded in 46 PC, the region became part of the Federal Province of Tersten, and was granted semi-autonomy under its own leadership. This relationship worked for both sides until the Serajji Conflict. On Cinu, resistance to the Conflict led to civil strife and protest. The Golich People still maintained close ties with their distant relatives on Cinu, and were troubled by the news, and showed solidarity by refusing to participate in the Conflict. This led to a decrease in autonomy, and civil unrest, culminating in Golichistan declaring itself independent from the Federal Province, citing the Constitution of Tersten enshrining their rights to do so. As such, they were granted their independence and made an equal member of the Republic of Tersten.

Territories

Golichistan is comprised of four regions, the Uludere Plateau, the Marshlands, the Voolani Wetlands, and the Vashan Heights.

Uludere Plateau

The Uludere Plateau is region of central Tersten. Uludere is an elevated plateau region with the Golich River flowing through it. It travels south into a wooded region by the coast, where the capital of Mehmet's Cove is settled. The town of Gyzylmat is located high up in the plateau, on the route into the Vashan Heights. On its eastern side, the Plateau settles out into a dry desert, with patches of grasslands along the coast, where the town of Seku is located. This marks the border between Golichistan and the Saralost Confederation.

Vashan Heights

The Vashan Heights is a region of the Pinascimate Mountains, high up in a largely forested section of the mountains. It is here that much of Golichistan's material resources, such as iron and coal, are harvested, such as from the mining town of Simtuk. Much of the region's industry is developed around the city of Adala, an industrialised city and the capital of the region.

Voolani Wetlands

The Voolani Wetlands lie south of the Vashan Heights, and is a tropical region of floodlands, wetlands, and bayous. The mouth of the mighty Takiwerk River lies here, and the river is considered the lifeblood of the Voolani area. Its regional capital, Taqir, is located just north of the river, and much of the land is used for farming, as the Takiwerk continues to allow life around it to thrive.

Marshlands

The Marshlands are a region of central Tersten, south of Uludere and Vashan. Here, much of the land surrounding the Koma Lake and its messy river is boggy and inhospitable. The largest city in the region, Marshfield, is built out on a peninsula in the southern coast of the Marshlands, and is elevated high above the sea and the swamp below. However, its regional capital, Koma, is settled further north, and is a cultural capital of Golichistan.
