Huángjīn Floodplain
The Huángjīn Floodplain is a region of Tersten, located in the Federal Province of Mediolama. It lies deep within the southern side of the Pinascimate Mountains, which isolate the region on every side except south, where it is connected to Big Basin. The region is often bathed in a blanked of think fog and heavy rains, which collect and flow out of the region through the Huángjīn River, which gives its name to the region. It is sometimes known as 'The Great Mire' by its southern neighbours.
Access to the region is often restricted to the driest parts of the year, as air travel is impossible during the rainy seasons. Most travel is done via the Huángjīn River, upstream from the Souls Lake, which connects it with the rest of Tersten. All travel upstream comes through the city of Rothberg, which lies outside the Floodplain, and is contested by the Recluse, the Republic of the Humble Servants of God, and the Republic of Cahir.
The floodplain is home to the Aresian Recluse, a small and minor government that rules in the name of the Areso-Tersteners in the area. They enjoy a special, autonomous status within Mediolama, similar to other semi-independent states.
The largest city in the region is Little Terra, built within in the floodplains and elevated above the water level by a series of canals. Little Terra is considered the defacto home of the Aresians on Tersten, since the collapse of the People's Republic of Lordania and their subsequent fall from grace.
The town of Goose is located in the Floodplain, near the border of Big Basin. It is used by the Recluse as a border town, where all visitors upstream are subject to passport and document checks, before either being permitted to travel upstream, or forced to return downstream. Despite many calling this a heavy-handed approach, the Aresian Recluse lives up to its name, wanting to be left alone, and so it has done its best to prevent any diplomatic incidents that would cause problems.
By accounts, the region has sensational cuisine and places of interest, however it has some of the lowest tourism rates on the planet, with many people very hesitant to travel to a region home to the Aresians, due to their historical ties with the Penal Colonies and the Unitarian Movement. However, many Aresians settled into the region following the collapse of the Penal System, and often were at odds with the Tersten State over land access rights.
