Neverwinter Stories: Book One – Chapter Eighteen

General Summary

Having regrouped and successfully repelled GeorGedor's attack on Xantharl's Keep, the party finally had an opportunity to rest. Narbeck Horn graciously thanked them for coming to the fortresses aid—paying them in respect, a hearty sum of coin, access to their infirmary, a pardon for the death of Dazlyn Grayshard, and promise for future cooperation and compensation. Top of their joint to-do list was addressing the threat of GeorGedor. After some formality with the commander, the party briefly went their separate. Lilith Blackheart visited the sickly Jh'an Relic, Markus Grasswind spoke with Reidoth, who bless some clay for him; and Alessandra Corlinnar made a few purchases at the local stables. After regrouping and loading their wagon, the party set back out on the open road.
Meanwhile, in an abandoned barn just north of Xantharl's Keep, allies of Worvil "the Weevil" lay in wait for his "obvious" escape from the fortress and their subsequent recovery of him. These three allies consisted of a cheery half-gold dragon craftswoman and cleric from Luruar, Askra; an ever-nervous and fiercely independent half-elven bard with unknown origin, Half-Moon; and one of Worvil's most loyal, "Frog Face" Frank. Sure enough, a flaming statue rose from Xantharl's Keep—something obvious and in character. Their immediate retrieval of the gang leader was delayed by the routed giants and oppressive darkness of the night. At the break of dawn they finally found the crater, though unfortunately surrounded by an uthgardt tribe, quickly identified as the Sky Pony tribe. The statue of Narbeck had landed on a sacred battlefield of there's and they believed that the statue was a message sent to them by their god. The nomads were initially hostile, but it didn't take long for Half-Moon to talk her way into having the tribe think that she was friends with their god while he was still mortal. Their tribe's berserker, Kienn, hoping for an explanation, lead the bard into the crater. Strangely, there was no statue in the center, but a steep pit.
Coming down the road from the east was the still recovering party, who just so happened upon the scene at Worvil's landing site. Curious, they rode up to see all the commotion. Again the uthgardt protested, but this time they were met with retaliation from the ill-tempered Markus. Tempers were only brought down by the word of Askra. Kienn acquiesced, stating that any cowards who entered the mysterious pit were certain to die anyway. With passage now permitted, the party and the recovery group, excluding Frank, descended into the muddy shaft.
As they traveled, Half-Moon took advantage of a minor distraction to create a illusory wall to slow the other's progress and get to the statue first. This however, proved to be a miscalculation. When the half-elf arrived at the statue she was ambushed by a hungry Xorn, whose craving for gold got the best of them as they ate all of her savings. The rest of the party finally caught up, and after a short back and forth, they managed to trade some more valuables for the statue. Having finally rescued Worvil—who gave his stolen map to Alessandra after studying it with his photographic memory—the sum of the two groups recruited the Xorn's help in exiting the muddy tunnel, reemerging in a grand display of magical orchestra and dramatic posing, striking awe into the Sky Pony tribe.
