Book One: The Trees of Life and Death — Chapter Twenty-Four Paralogue: Redwings Take Flight
General Summary
When Markus Grasswind and Askra passed through Longsaddle on their way to Mirabar, they noticed a well paying posting on the village's job board. Poachers had been targeting the endangered redwing griffons in the Surbrin Hills. Anyone who took the job, successfully preserved the redwings, and thwarted the poachers could report to Ardanac Harpell for a 1,000 gold reward. Adventure awaited, so after completing their mithral armor and reuniting with Alessandra Corlinnar and Half-Moon, the four traveled back to Longsaddle.
First they went to Ivy Mansion in search of Archmage Ardanac. There they found not only the wizard who posted the job, but also another adventuring party—the Executioners—bidding for it. The two parties immediately starting butting heads, especially with Markus and their leader Chad Buckley having a long, sour history together. Half-Moon wounded the Executioners' pride and sent them off through social wit alone. Our heroes took the contract and set out toward the hills, toward the last known location of the poachers.
Several hours in the dusty hills went by without sight of them. Eventually they came across a canyon where the far wall was much taller than the other. Large nests could be seen perched near the top and, after some slight difficulties navigating to and up the other side, the adventurers approached the nests. They were too late. The poachers had already slain a griffon and taken her eggs, with the intent to do the same to the one mother remaining. Our heroes countered their offense, throwing themselves through the poacher's ranks and defending the wounded mother. Breaking through their ranks they began to route the illegal hunters before they could do more harm, but a complication arose. Alessandra, who stayed on the lower side of the canyon, was plucked from the ground and dragged towards the heavens by GeorGedor's now rogue shadow wyvern. She was thrown against the canyon wall and nearly killed after the beast crashed down on her. The bard and cleric rushed to her defense—healing and shielding her. Markus leapt from the back of the now cooperative griffon, crashing down on the wyvern like literal lightning. Alessandra was saved as the wyvern and dragon knight took back to the air with the griffon quick to follow, fighting to the death in the open sky. When the beast was finally slain all three fell to the canyon below, but were fortunately saved by Askra, who smartly used the griffon cavalry ring given to the party by Felosial so long ago.
After restoring the mother's health and returning to the nests, it became clear that she wasn't able to care for so many orphaned eggs. Wishing to try and conserve the endangered redwings, the party chose to take in and raise the excess eggs theirselves. They returned to the archmage with two things: the poacher's leader's sword to collect the reward, and a name to go by. The Redwings.

Rewards Granted
Our heroes earned their promised 1,000 gold pieces, but also received five unhatched redwing griffon eggs, a redwing hatchling, and the carcass of the shadow wyvern.
Missions/Quests Completed
The Redwings successfully defended the endangered griffons, thwarting the poacher's goals. The shadow wyvern that had been terrorizing the public was also slain, although there was seemingly no bounty on it.
