We take a rest in town, and then set out for the road to find Nyala and the group. It doesn’t take long before we do come upon them, but they look in bad shape. They’ve lost someone. Rasmus says that there was another rock fall, but it came from the sky, not the mountain. Nyala suspects it was a wizard’s doing. There was no sign of a body even after the rocks took out the old man. We decide to check it out before returning to town.
The rocks that have fallen are scorched, despite the snow all around. Jade detects traces of magic on them. She determines that it’s probably cleric magic. Quell peers over the cliffs edge but has trouble seeing far enough down. Wulf finds an animal to talk with in case they saw anything.
Cali climbs down the cliff to the first available ledge and doesn’t find anything useful, but there is some nice soft moss that they put in their bag. Quell finds a ledge higher up that could’ve been where the cleric hid to throw the rocks, and tells Cali to climb up there when they’re done.
Wulf decides to chat with a fluffy, tail-less mouse. He requests seeds, and Wulf gets him nuts from Jade’s rations. Mouse is not useful but shames the “large” for not hiding from rocks. Wulf moves on to the birds. They argue over whether they can make a better nest than the one destroyed by the rocks. They did see the man fall though. “Thought Oh! Can fly! But could not.” The birds saw two blue flying people. This suggests that they were dwarves. They were seen going upward, where Quell suggested someone could have hidden.
Wulf scrambles upward without precautions, and after processing this, Cali starts up after him. Wulf chats with the vulture and then heads up further, followed by Cali, to find some footprints and a sigil in the sheer wall. We climb back down with ease and draw the sigil for Quell. Jade opens up dimension door without warning and teleports herself and Quell down to the forest below. Wulf panics, and he and Cali climb down to meet them.
Jade apologizes for scaring Wulf with the sudden dimension door. Quell draws symbols around the body when she finds it, and Wulf says he will carry the body. The body is freezing cold, despite the scorch marks, and his face is of sheer terror. Quell pulls out the crystal just to see and it gets slightly colder. Jade detects necromancy and more cleric magic on the body. She also finds evocation on the rocks.
We talk about necromancy and Wulf gets very nervous that the body will come to life while he carries him. He does it anyway but is v uncomfortable. Quell piles up some rocks and leaves a bead and some ribbon on top for him before we leave. Wulf comments that Quell’s lady must be very powerful. Quell is very pleased.
We return to town, dead body in tow. Everyone seems to be with the healer, so that’s where we head. Rasmus drops his drink at the sight of the body and begins to cry. Liniksha is rushing about to get him a new one, and Nyala comes over to hear what we found.
We have a conversation about the morals of the travelers, how they put Nyala and Rasmus in danger by knowing what was following them but refusing to say, and moreso being reserved to die instead of fighting to protect the others. We hype Nyala up a little and a couple tears fall from Cali’s face. Nyala gets us some creamy tea that’s so thick it’s like there’s butter in it.
After a bit, the Savar girl, Phen, wakes up. She thanks us for saving her and swears by the lady of the shonsteppe that she will “repay this debt.” She tells us that she lost her horse and became lost herself, unable to find enough to eat until she found the stream. She gave herself up for dead by the time we found her.
She is the lawful heir to the throne, according to her, and she “will have her grievances avenged." We accidentally got ourselves involved in politics. Her father is dead and she is the only legitimate heir, anyone trying to claim the throne right now is her half sibling. …all according to her, at least.
She says that she’s had so much trouble finding a husband because she cannot be certain who is and is not her half brother. Her dad slept around a lotttttttttt. Linishka gives her a tea with something sleepy in it, and very quickly she is asleep again. Linishka had made promises to the girl’s father when he was alive, and now believes that the town will need to go to war due to those promises.
We decide to look for the necromancer to keep some of the pressure off of Linishka once the young people go to war. “That… that would be laudable.” “…What is laudable?” She advises us to see Tribhuvam before we leave tomorrow, he can help. He used to be an adventurer.
Jade tells us that she will not help Phen in her quest to become Empress because her people ravaged Jade’s village and they cause war wherever they go. Wulf offers to give Jade his part of the favor she owes us, and Quell does too. Cali is about to offer her part and Jade ends the conversation.
